The Offer

Direct link to offer

  • Citizens Community Federal Bank (CCFB) is offering a bonus of $200 when you open a qualifying checking account and complete the following requirements within 60 days of account opening:
    • Receive a single direct deposit credit (an ACH credit) of at least $250
    • Complete 5 signature based debit card transactions
  • The following accounts are eligible: Freedom Rewards Checking, Freedom Checking, Traditional Checking and Senior Checking.

The Fine Print

  • $200 bonus will be paid within 90 days of account opening
  • If account is overdrawn within 60 days they reserve the right to deny the incentive
  • If any owner on the account has been an owner of a CCFBank consumer checking account they reserve the right to deny this incentive
  • Offer applies to new accounts open with new money
  • Applicable to Wisconsin, Minnesota and Michigan residents only
  • One bonus per tax identification number
  • All bank account bonuses are treated as income/interest and as such you have to pay taxes on them

Avoiding Fees

Freedom rewards checking has no monthly fee to worry about. There is an early account termination fee of $50 if the account is closed within six months.

Our Verdict

Seems like any ACH credit will trigger the direct deposit requirement and 5 debit card transactions is also trivial to complete. If this is a soft pull then it’s definitely worth doing and something we will add to our list of the best checking promotions. If anybody goes for this one, share your experiences below.

Just spoke to csr from the bank they told me you can apply online and get the bonus, there is a soft pull to open the account, and there’s no early account termination fee.

  2. Kyle says:

I emailed customer service last night asking if I could apply online and if there was a promo code to use.

I received the following message today: Thank you for your message. Accounts need to be opened in person in a branch. Please call our Customer Service Center at 1-800-590-9920 and a member of our friendly staff will be happy to assist you with further information about opening a new account.

hmmm. conflicting DP on in-branch opening from Yosef and Kyle.

I signed up shortly after seeing this posting and called them up. They said it needs to be done in-branch to get the bonus. I went there, and their main counter had a stack of mailers. They didn’t seem overly interested in creating a ‘customer profile’ and didn’t ask too many questions during sign-up. I think the bulk of the time was spent going over the many pages of account details/terms.
They also said credit card funding was not an option.
Interestingly enough, you can choose an account that can give you 2% APY on up to $10,000 if you use a debit card 15x a month. If you miss a month, no biggier — try again later.

  5. JohnnyBoyJr says:

I wasn’t told if this would be a hard or soft pull. (The young fella seemed like he may not know the difference, either)
I declined the overdraft protection, however, so I’m hoping this will be soft.
