The Fine Print

  • Please enter promo code #get200 if submitting online application to qualify.
  • We will deposit the $200 to your consumer checking account within 120 days of the opening of the account when all steps are completed within 90 days.
  • Minimum deposit of $50 is required to open an account plus a $10 one-time membership fee.
  • Account must be open and in good standing for payment. $200 offer valid only between October 23 and December 31, 2017; however, Unitus may discontinue the promotion at any time.
  • Must be 18 years or older. Employees ineligible to participate.
  • Any Automated Clearing House (ACH) deposit of at least $500 will qualify as a direct deposit.
  • Limit one #get200 entry per household
  • All bank account bonuses are treated as income/interest and as such you have to pay taxes on them

Avoiding Fees

There is a $10 membership fee that is not avoidable. This account has no monthly fees to worry about. I didn’t find any mention of any early account termination fee in the fee schedule.

Our Verdict

Pretty good bonus, no monthly fees to worry about and pretty easy to hit the bonus requirements. Upside is that you can fund a little bit with a credit card as well. I’ve added it to the best checking bonuses.

    Wow, first ever OR only offer I’ve seen here. Better wait a couple days before applying:

    I’m from Oregon, but residing overseas for the next 6 months or so. I wonder if I could sign up for this?
    Anyone know.. if.. Unitus requires
    – a signature card mailed in?
    – any utility bills, etc. (currently don’t have any?)
    – or visiting a branch in person?
    If I can just open this online with my Oregon address and Oregon I.D that will be sweet. But also worry about risking it and getting told to mail in a signature card, visit a branch while I’m overseas. Thanks!

      Dan, the signature card issue can be mitigated by mailing it to someone u know in OR, and having them drop it in the mail so it gets the right OR poststamp

        That’s interesting.. but it wouldn’t work mailing it from the Philippines to the U.S for two reasons.. 1) Mail here gets stolen all the time for no reason.. 2) the cost to mail even a letter to the U.S add too much cost to it mitigating the bonus incentive worth.

        However, if there’s no signature card? required for Unitus.. just want anyone to share a datapoint on this? then I will be happy to open an account. 🙂

          they did have a signature card, yeah. i signed mine in the branch when they called me in to verify my ID.

          you might be able to scan it and email it in though

    hell yeah! I’ve been waiting to milk Unitus…this is the first promo i’ve seen for them, so I’ll definitely be jumping on this one.

    i’m at 22 accounts this year, and I feel like its now my duty to maximize accounts in the remaining months

    Does anyone know what counts as “direct deposit?” As soon as anyone here tries doing ACH pushes, please add your datapoints (for those who already opened an account over the last few days). I don’t currently have a legitimate DD to use.

    OK, I just opened my account with them – looks like all new accounts are reviewed internally by the “online sales department”, they said they would contact me shortly.

    1. you must open a savings account as well as checking – no fees, $5 minimum opening deposit
    2. Up to $750 total credit card funding (including the $10 membership fee, between checking/savings)
    3. Checking minimum $50 funding
    4. Didn’t have a hard pull for me
    5. I funded with my BOA Merrill, not showing up as pending yet, so not sure on CA/purchase status. Probably will show up after the internal review

          DP update: I applied 10/23 and the next day was asked via email to provide my work phone number (somehow missed that in the app) and a picture of my drivers license. Provided that info 10/25 and 10/26 received an approval and online logins to view my account. Done deal.

          Only 4 accounts in the last 12 months for me so probably not a good DP for Chex

      good to know. the $750 CC funding ads an extra $15 to sweeten the deal. and no HP is excellent news. I’ll apply tonight to confirm no HP.

      An update to my comment; I got a message from them a couple hours later:

      “Thank you for your interest in joining Unitus Community Credit Union. We have reviewed your application; however, we did not receive all of the necessary information to open an account. We can continue the application process in person at any Unitus branch. Within the next 30 days, please bring:

      -Your driver’s license or government-issued ID, like a passport or military identification
      -A second piece of ID, like a vehicle registration or a signed credit/debit card with your name imprinted on the front.

      If your government-issued ID does not have your current, physical residential address, you will also need to provide a utility bill (electricity, gas, water) with your name and current address.

      If you are not able to bring these items within the next 30 days, you may need to reapply for membership.

      Should you have any questions, please let us know.

        I’d be curious to hear what the problem was with applying online.

        I’m planning to apply online. I’m an Oregon resident, but currently traveling overseas for the next few months. So if they require me to go into a branch then I’m out of luck. :p

    Very weird application process…It doesn’t really confirm or deny they’ve opened an account for you or not. Like Bub, it eventually kicked me out to a page where you can print an application that’s prefilled with your information.

    Even though I selected the Checking account option, it seemed to forget that was selected and the pre-filled application form only shows “Prime Share” as being checked…so strange

    I funded for $750 with CitiDC set to $0 CA limit, so we’ll see if that goes through or not. I might end up in the same boat as Sean and have to go into the branch to sort it out.

      It doesn’t allow me to select the checking account at all. After clicking on “select Unitus Checking”, nothing happens to the “SELECTED ACCOUNTS” box. Their website doesn’t work very well.

      I have exactly the same experience with you.
      First they sent me a message saying I need to open a saving account as well.
      After I replied, there is a second message saying I need to bring in government ID, utility bills with my name and current address, etc.
      It also shows that my account is not primary instead of secondary…

      The whole process is pretty confusing.

        Usually, it’s when you show up in person.. that’s when they grill you about “oh, we see you’ve opened 5 accounts in the last year.. look at all these ChexSystem requests..” and sometimes deny you or often make you feel so awkward sitting there. That’s why I really hate having to go down in person to finish opening. :/

          yeah, it’s frustrating for sure. my go-to excuse for lots of accounts is me testing out online banking software since i’m very picky and need to find something i like

    after going into the branch today to verify my ID, they said my $750 CC fund online wouldn’t go through, and they could do it as a cash advance in branch.

    So beware, online funding will fall through if they call u into the branch, and in-branch minimum funding is $50 for checkin and $5 for CU Share accoubt, so bring cash with u

    Just wondering if anyone who tried opening the account online was able to fully open / start using the account WITHOUT having to go into a branch? The nearest branch is very far from where I am in Oregon.

      You might be able to open it over the phone in that case. They seemed very reasonable when I was in the branch, so that might be your best option.

    Wife just applied, and the CU is now saying the limit is 1 per household.

    Post may need to be updated to reflect this seemingly arbitrary limit if they’re enforcing it

    DP: I live in PDX and *thought* i opened online with $750 on my credit card over the weekend. process / website clunky but manageable. on monday got an email indicated i needed to log in to check secure message. message basically said i had to come in person with picture ID (similar to Superchurn). i went in yesterday. they had to redo everything manually… even though i had set up everything online (user name, passwords security question etc) had to start over. took ~20min in the branch plus more time at home to redo and double check everything (make sure you enable on line statements or will not get the bonus– its was not the default setting!). apparently the rep said it is common that the on line tool does not work. in my case it seemed the mix up was there was a field that asked for “previous address” (was like 13 years ago for me) in the online set up process and did not match something in system so flagged it? as others noted, they cannot use a credit card to fund in the branch (well they could but he said it would process as a cash advance for sure). not the worst experience for $200, but if you are local may just want to do in branch to avoid wasting more time. good luck.
