[Targeted/YMMV] American Express SPG Personal Spending Bonus: $4,000/$6,000 & Get 10,000/15,000 Points

The Offer

Direct Link to offer (please share if you have it)

Some SPG personal cardholders are getting the following offer:

  • Get 10,000 bonus SPG points per $4,000 in spend through November 30th, 2018. Spend an additional $2,000 and receive an additional 5,000 points (e.g spend $6,000 and receive 15,000 bonus points)

The Fine Print

  • Register by October 31st, 2018
  • Spend by November 30th, 2018

Our Verdict

Similar offer already went out to business cardholders. If you spend $4,000 or $6,000 exactly this is an extra 2.5 points per $1 spent. The card normally earns 2x points on all purchases so this bumps it up to 4.5x, not bad but not that crazy for a spending bonus. Keep in mind these offers often go out around renewal date so you also need to work out if you want to keep the card and pay the annual fee or not in that case.

Any opinions on whether to keep the SPG biz Amex now that the merger is done? Don’t really see the benefit except for maybe bonus spend at the hotel. Not sure if it’s worth keeping for the AF.

Depends on whether you value the free night certificate at $95 or not. It’s not very hard to find a redemption that would otherwise cost more than $95. There’s definitely value to be had.

I called and received an offer of spend $2,000 and receive 20,000 points

I found a diff Spend Bonus under My Offers section for my personal SPG. Interestingly, it never showed in the app and only appeared on web interface as Stephen Pepoer wrote earlier today on Frequent Miler. Here is offer:

“You can earn 15,000 bonus points after spending $6,000 in eligible purchases and an additional 5,000 bonus points after spending an additional $3,000 in eligible purchases on your registered Starwood Preferred Guest® Credit Card between the time you complete registration and November 30, 2018. Registration period ends on October 31, 2018.”

^Weird offer considering the higher $9k total spend yields 4.222 Marriott pts per dollar as opposed to 4.5 pts per dollar at the $6k threshold, unless I’m interpreting it wrong.

I got 20,000 points after $10,000 in spend and another 10,000 after another $5000 in spend

I got 15k points for $6k, additional 5k for $3k on my Luxury Card.

Same for my wife on the Luxury

My datapoint was a bit different from above. Here is the language on the confirmation email I received after joining –
“You can earn 20,000 bonus points after spending $10,000 in eligible purchases and an additional 10,000 bonus points after spending an additional $5,000 in eligible purchases on your registered Starwood Preferred Guest® Credit Card between the time you complete registration and November 30, 2018. Registration period ends on October 31, 2018”.

Did you guys check with Amex/SPG? I talked to CSR, who may not have the right info, but I was told that 1. the 10k bonus is SPG points 2. If I upgrade the spg card to the luxury card, that 4k in spend will count for my 5k sign up bonus spend requirement

PSA these are new marriott pointd and not SPG points. So you are actually getting in total 1.5 old SPG per dollar! Not a good deal

My offer is one additional point for each dollar of eligible purchases on your Card at U.S. supermarkets and U.S. restaurants between the time you complete registration and November 30, 2018, up to a maximum of 2,000 bonus points

I got spend $2k get 6k points, spend another $1k get 4k more points. So 10k for $3k spend.

SPG personal. 6K after $2K spend another 4K after additional $1K

Can anyone please refresh my memory on this (this is the first time I’ve ever actually been targeted, so I’ve never needed to try this in the past)… I know AMEX sometimes claws back signup bonuses if they are MS’d using GC.com or GCM, but is this also the case with these spending bonuses, or is it safe to blatantly MS this? Has anything else changed in the last ~12 months in this regard that I need to be aware of? Thanks in advance!

Not targeted. Offer not offered in list of AMEX Offers or when I chatted with CSR. Only spend $300, get $60 credit at US Marriott/SPG properties available. About to spend $2000 on an overseas Marriott property so disappointing.
