[Expired] People’s United Bank $100 Checking Bonus – Inside Stop & Shop’s, Direct Deposit Not Required [NY only]

This bonus has expired and is no longer available. Click here for a list of the best banking bonuses.

Not in CT this time.

Bonus is back, thanks to Danny Deal Guru for letting us know.

Offer at a glance

  • Maximum bonus amount: $100
  • Availability: People’s United branches inside Stop & Shop’s, located in the following states: NY only
  • Direct deposit required: Optional, $100+
  • Additional requirements: 10 debit card transactions of at least $25 each
  • Hard/soft pull: Soft pull
  • Credit card funding: Unknown (although you usually can’t do that in branch anyway)
  • Monthly fees: $0
  • Early account termination fee: None listed
  • Expiration date: August 25th, 2017

The Offer

There is no direct link to this offer

  • Open a personal checking account with People’s United Bank & receive a $100 bonus, this is only available at their Stop & Shop in store locations. Must complete one of the following requirements:
    • Receive at least one direct deposit of at least $100 into the new checking account within 60 days of account opening OR
    • Obtain a debit card that is linked to your new account and then use the debit card to make at least 10 purchases of $25+ each within 60 days of account opening

people's united

The Fine Print

  • Cannot have had a People’s United personal checking account in the last 90 days
  • Direct deposit requirements are limited to payroll, social security, pension and government benefits. Paypal transactions are specifically excluded.
  • Reward should post within three months after the expiry of the offer (e.g sometime in late August)
  • Cannot be combined with any other offer
  • All bank account bonuses are treated as income/interest and as such you have to pay taxes on them

Avoiding Fees

Your best option to avoid fees is to open the plus checking account which has no monthly fees or minimums. I wasn’t able to find any mention of any early account termination fees mentioned in their fee schedule, but probably good idea to double check this or keep the account open for at least six months (remember there are no fees) to ensure you’re not hit with an early account termination fee.

Our Verdict

Not a bad deal if you live in the area as it’s a soft pull, no direct deposit is required. You just need to use the debit card ten times ($25+ each time), if you put that same spend on a 2% cash back card you’d earn $5 They seem to offer this bonus once a year.  I’m adding this to our list of the best checking sign up bonuses.

  1. Steve says:

The screenshot in the Slickdeals post says that’s it’s only available at their Rhinebeck, NY location.

  2. Shane says:

I tried this deal in November and successfully opened the account, however they closed it within 2 weeks after they saw I had opened several checking accounts in the previous few months. So it seems they’re a bit sensitive to that sort of thing, for what it’s worth. The requirement of having no account with them within 90 days caught my eye as liberal compared to many who make it 6 months or a year, but I won’t attempt this at the moment as I’ve done M&T and Capital One nyc branch bonuses within the last 2 months. Will try this one again if for some reason I can manage to go 3 or 4 months without opening any new accounts.

    • Eric says:

Did they actually tell you that was the reason or are you assuming that? I wonder if other banks will start doing this.

  3. Steve says:

I did this last year. Took ages for the bonus to post, but I did get it. No monthly fees, and I’m pretty sure they reimburse ATM fees.

  4. L says:

If the promo was worded with Stop & Shop’s in NH, I don’t believe there are any of those anymore… they all closed last I checked. I might stop at one in MA and see if it’s valid there.

Closing account today. Opened in Nov 2016. Did transactions and received $100 Feb 2017.

  8. Paul says:

How would you go about confirming if it is a soft or hard pull on your credit? Would you call the bank and ask or go into it in person and say you want to open it if it is a soft pull?

Thanks and thanks for making these posts they are awesome!

  9. Eddy says:

Was a soft for me. I think banks generally only do hard pulls when you opt for overdraft protection. YMMV

  10. chex says:

A long time ago I opened an account with them, they just pulled Chex.

  11. Roger says:

Just visited branch in Stop & Shop in Putnam, CT, and they know nothing about this deal.

Quoting Danny the Deal Guru: “They have branches in Connecticut, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Maine and New York, but the flyer I picked up at my local Stop & Shop says that the offer is available in Long Island and New York City only. Let me know if you see it other states as well, as that’s usually been the case in the past.”

  12. Ian says:

fyi, NH & VT need removal cuz there’s no S&S. Based on S&S website, Stop & Shop Supermarket Company LLC employs approximately 60,000 associates and operates 400 stores throughout MA, CT, RI, NY, and NJ., (S&S announced closing 6 NH stores in Aug.6,2013!)

  13. Connie says:

Went to branch in westchester county NY today, banker never heard of offer, called up another branch, same deal. It seems to be there is a $200 offer going around though, didn’t tell me specifics.

  14. Bruno says:

The Banker at the Long Island City office said this ended on August 25th.
