Contents

The Offer

Direct link to offer

  • Receive a sign up bonus of $250 when you open a Simple+ or Select checking account with Astoria bank and complete the following requirements:
    • Maintain the required balances to keep the accounts fee free (Simple+ requires $2,500+ in the account or $10,000+ across all Astoria accounts and Select requires $25,00+ across all Astoria accounts)
    • Complete one of the following during three consecutive months:
      • Receive direct deposits of $250 or more
      • Make three online bill payments of $25 or more each
  • In addition to this it’s possible to get another $50 for activating direct deposit. According to these comments this may no longer be possible.

The Fine Print

  • Limit of one bonus per customer
  • Bill pays or direct deposits must all be completed within 4 months of account opening
  • Bonus will be posted within 30 business days of the requirements being met
  • A direct deposit is considered a recurring, pre-authorized deposit credited to the customer’s checking account via the Automated Clearing House (ACH). One-time ACH credits such as tax refunds, payments/transfers from other bank accounts, etc. do not qualify
  • All bank account bonuses are treated as income/interest and as such you have to pay taxes on them

Avoiding Fees

The simple+ account comes with a monthly fee of $10, this is waived if you keep an average monthly balance of $2,500 which is required for the bonus anyway.

The Select has a monthly fee of $15 which is waived if you have at least $25,000 across all your Astoria accounts.

There is no mention of any early account termination fee on their fee schedule page. If your account is inactive for 90 days or more, you’ll be charged a $10 inactivity fee.

Our Verdict

This is a pretty good bonus and was offered last year as well, if I lived in NY then I would definitely complete this deal. Here is what I’d do:

  • Open a new Simple+ account
  • Add a total of $2,725 in funds to meet the minimum balance requirements, this would also keep the account fee free and give me enough money to do the three bill pays per month for three months (you can only fund $2,500 at account set up, so you’ll need to fund again afterwards, thanks to Nick for letting me know this)
  • Complete three bill pays per month for three consecutive months, making sure they are all at least $25 each (you could just make small payments on your credit card or other bill) (+$250)
  • Wait six months to avoid any possible early account termination fee
  • Withdraw all funds including bonus to regular checking account
  • Close account

If you have any experience with this bonus, then please share it in the comments. We’ve add this to our Best Bank Bonus page for regional areas. Also, check out this Bank Bonus Resource page for lots of useful info about opening bank accounts.

  1. Prasanna R says:

Do we have to be an NY resident to take advantage of this offer? I drive to NYC all the time and I am resident of NJ.

    • No idea, give it a try and let us know! I’m sure a lot of people are in the same position.

      • Prasanna R says:

        Thanks! Will try.

        • Andrew says:

It is possible to apply and live outside of NY, the only catch is you need to open the bank in person…

Also, it’s 3 consecutive bill pays of at least $25 each for 3 months, for a total of 3 bill pays for $75. Your post states that it’s 9 bill pays (3 each month) for a total of $225. That is incorrect.

          • Eddy says:

Sorry, that’s not correct. You must do 3 bill pays of at least $25 EACH month for three months. That totals nine.

“OR have three Bill/People Pay payments of at least $25 each per month” from their website.

  2. DR says:

    The monthly fee is $10.

  3. Dave says:

The schedule of fees is at https://astoriabank.com/download/OAC/SimplePlusAccount_Agreement.pdf

    Simple+ is $10
    Select is $15

there doesn’t seem to be an early closing fee but there is an inactivity fee of $10/month after 89 days.

  4. Nick says:

The most you can fund the account with is $2,500

  5. Vdebs says:

Was planning to set this up today actually. They’re a smallish bank so I think its hard to get an account open without being an NY resident. In fact you’ll have difficulty being anything but a downstate resident.

  6. Dave says:

Also from https://astoriabank.com/personalbankingstories/ it looks like this $250 offer is stackable with the normal $50 direct-deposit offer, so this is really a $300 bonus.

  7. Adam P. says:

I did this bonus when it was offered last year. Couple things to note:

-For some reason, I had to go into a branch to validate my identity in person. Thankfully, there was one right near me. But worth considering if you aren’t in NYC.
-The bill pay is very easy to set up.
-Transactions take a long time to post (like 5 days–longer than the big banks).
-There’s an account inactivity fee of $10/mo, so keep on doing something with it even after the bonus posts. I haven’t closed mine yet but have been doing a $25 bill pay once a month and that’s avoided any fees.
-The bonus triggered and was deposited instantly after three months.

Overall, it was sort of a pain, but still worth doing.

  8. emma says:

Is this New York City only or New York State only? It seems that this bank only has branches around NYC – https://astoriabank.com/locations/

  9. emma says:

Is it New York City or New York state? I noticed that this bank only has branches around NYC.

Also, where do you see the requirement that NY is only? I did not find the information from the details…Thanks!

  10. sderd says:

I am living at NY, and I just applied. That’s what I got “Thank you for your interest in opening a new account.
Unfortunately, we cannot process your application at this time. We will contact you by mail within 2-3 business days with additional information.” Any one knows what happened? Thank you!

    • Possibly too many recent bank accounts opened? Maybe they are inquiriy sensitive with ChexSystems, let us know what it says in 2-3 days time.

      • sderd says:

how many accounts do you think are too many…? I think I opened 5 checking accounts over the last two years, and closed 3 of them. Is it too many..?

  11. Nate Hill says:

You do not need to be a resident of New York for this promotion. I did it previously didn’t get the bonus as the transactions needed to post by A certain date and didn’t meet the necessary requirements. Don’t think it needs to be opened for a specific amount of time before closing.

    • Awesome news about not needing to be in NY, looks like you’ll need to be close in case they need to verify identity though.

    • Ryan says:

Can you advise how you made this happen?

I applied using a temporary NYC address (a friend’s address) and was given the “this produce is not available in your area.”

      Any help is appreciated.

  12. Bonus says:

I did the deal last year and closed the account after I got the bonus. How long before i Do the deal again?

For example for Chase, you have to wait 90 or 180 days before you get the bonus again.

  13. Alex says:

I did this offer last year and it was pretty painless. I live in NY state, nowhere near NYC but opned the account online and never had to go to a branch.

  14. Ted says:

Applied for wife and I (separately) yesterday. I saw the ACH trial deposits pending today so I went to “Finalize your account” by using the Verification Code given. Both of ours received a message “An error has occurred. If the problem persists, please contact us using the contact information in the left panel.” as we clicked Continue.

Called in, first rep said there was an error with the application and to re-submit. Second said the application was denied. If the latter is the case, then they must not like our Chex inquiries. We’ve had 7 and 6 checking accounts opened in the last few (3 to 4) months, not sure how many actually made it on the Chex report. Nothing before that time frame.

Or, it is too soon to verify the deposits? Plan on waiting another day and trying again.

    Anyone with similar experience?

Also, if I am denied the Astoria account, the Chex inquiry (given that they did pull one) will still remain on my Chex report, like how a credit inquiry works, is that right?

    Thanks

  15. Lajoyce says:

Just created an account today. The offer expiration says today’s date, June 30, but I won’t be able to verify for a couple more days because of the test deposits. I hope I am still able to get the bonus.

  16. erien says:

I was told that the opening bonus $250 and direct deposit bonus $50 can not be combined, which means you can only earn one bonus. Let me know if others have something updated. Thanks

    • Elliot says:

I don’t buy this. Look at https://astoriabank.com/personalbankingstories/. There is a table listing benefits of each account, and there are rows for $50 direct deposit bonus and the $250 welcome bonus one after the other. Seems to very clearly indicate you can get both for the same account. Terms and conditions don’t in any way exclude this either. I’m still waiting on my bonuses to post, but I will definitely argue for both if they try to only agree to one.

      • Raj says:

Just curious. Did you manage to get the additional $50 bonus. Just spoke with a CSR, but he denied stating that the below sentence in t&c clearly says “Offer cannot be combined with any other offer”.

***The bonus is limited to $250 per account regardless of number of these services acquired for account. Offer cannot be combined with any other offer. Limit one offer per customer and account.

    • james snider says:

I was told in branch that you can combine the two. Had to open in branch because verification questions online did not match my profile. The lady asked if I wanted to set up a direct deposit today. I said no. She says that if I change my mind there is another $50 in bonus

  17. Will Gu says:

Applied the simple+ checking and got approved in branch. The bill pay can be automated through online banking, which saves a lot of trouble. Another thing to notice is that they have ambiguous notes on the additional $50 bonus for setting up the direct deposit.

“A direct deposit is considered a recurring, pre-authorized deposit credited to the customer’s checking account via the Automated Clearing House (ACH). One-time ACH credits such as tax refunds, payments/transfers from other bank accounts, etc. do not qualify.”

I wonder if anyone has succeeded in getting that $50 and how many DD you have done.

  18. Tom says:

I live thousands of miles away from NY. I filled out of a few pages of the application and was told that this product is not available in my state. So this is not nationwide. I suspect it’s either just NY or maybe a few neighboring states are allowed.

  19. JOe says:

Are the months calendar months? or are they months based on when you opened your acct/

  20. Kim says:

    Got a letter today:
We have made a business decision to not establish an account relationship with you at this time.
Anybody knows why that would be? Can you open too many checking accounts?

  21. SSD says:

Tried to apply but they said they don’t offer account in my state (FL).

  22. em says:

Coney Island branch, on Neptune ave. very nice.
Teller helped me out to open an account.

  23. emma says:

I do not think it is a $300 bonus. Already called the customer service number and stopped by some branch in NYC. all the people told me that the $50 is for the old customers.

  24. Steve says:

This bank *does* charge the $10 monthly fee for the first month. I sent them a secure message about it, hopefully they’ll refund it. (I don’t live too far from a branch, so if I have to go in person, so be it.)

  25. Daniel says:

Anyone else having trouble transferring in additional funds? I can’t seem to set up a new transfer?

  26. Pingback: Build Your Own Football 401K | Football 401K

  27. Patrick says:

Any idea what will trigger the $50 direct deposit bonus? I did the bonus last year. Becareful as I paid $50 in fees because I did pay attention. Still walked away with $200. I will do again this year since there was no mention of this offer being only for new customer 😀

  28. Daniel Burke says:

Cancelled the card in branch today. There was no early termination fee.

  29. matt says:

FYI, I spoke on the phone with a CSR and the offer has been extended to end of Feb. 2016. I was going to ask if the account needed to be opened by 12/31 or the requirements need to be met by 12/31 to get the bonus, but the offer has been extended.

  30. Raj says:

As an Non-NYC resident, I was able to open an account in branch. But $50 Direct deposit bonus is only for the ones who do not qualify for $250 bonus. Basically it is one or the other. Also verified by calling them.

  31. Stam says:

Offer updated in their website, valid until 03/31/2016.

  32. Daniel says:

Anyone have any luck churning this one?

  33. T says:

is it possible to fund the $2,500 with a credit card?

  34. Jim says:

Does anyone know what Astoria considers to be DD? I couldn’t find it in the ‘list of methods’ index.

    • Lajoyce says:

I too would like to know what counts as DD. I got the $250 bonus from bill pays this fall. Just recently downgraded my account from Simple+ to Simple and the downgrade came with a message offering that $50 DD bonus again. Wouldn’t mind picking it up if there are alternative ways to trigger the requirement.

  35. Jon says:

I tried applying for this online, and when I reached the stage at https://onlineapps.ibanking-services.com/olnas/OLNASServlet/submitPrimaryApplicantTwo, I was given the message “Thank you for your interest in opening a new account.
Unfortunately, we do not offer this product in your state.”

For reference, I am in Ohio.

I’m calling them now to see if I can open the account by phone.

    • Jon says:

Okay, I called and the CSR had to check with a superior but the conclusion was that you must be in NY state in order to open an account.

  36. Saabfan says:

Do we need $2,500 there to get the bonus or to keep the account free?

  37. Dave_B says:

It appears this was extended again, to 6/30/16 this time. The fine print on the website now says:

*A new Simple+ or Select checking account must be opened by 06/30/2016. Offer available for Simple+ or Select checking customers who are new Astoria Bank checking customers. Owners of checking accounts that have previously received a bonus are ineligible. To qualify for the bonus, each month for three consecutive months within the first four months of opening a new Simple+ or Select checking account, you must (1) Maintain the required balance AND (2) Receive direct deposits totaling at least $250 each month OR have three Bill/People Pay payments of at least $25 each per month, made through Astoria Bank Online/Mobile Banking, post to your Simple+ or Select checking account. For the Simple+ checking account, you are required to maintain an average monthly balance of $2,500 or more in the account or maintain a minimum balance of $10,000 in any combination of related Astoria Bank deposit accounts on your statement cycle date. A Simple+ checking account has a $10 monthly service charge which can be avoided by maintaining the required balance. For the Select checking account, you are required to maintain a minimum balance of $25,000 in any combination of related Astoria Bank deposit accounts on your statement cycle date. A Select checking account has a $15 monthly service charge which can be avoided by maintaining the required balance.

The cash bonus of $250 will be credited to the new checking account within 30 business days after receipt of the third month’s required direct deposits or after the third month’s required Bill/People Pay payments have posted. Account must be open when bonus is credited.

  38. Jake says:

Data point – declined for an account with the “we’ve made a business decision” language. Fwiw, I’ve opened 5 other accounts in the past few months (2 in Dec, 1 in Feb, 2 in Mar).

    • David C says:

Strange, I’ve opened quite a few more than that in that same timeframe, yet I had no issue opening an account with Astoria.

Are you sure you don’t have any negative marks on your chex report? You might want to request a free report and make sure.

      • David C says:

Sorry, scratch that. They rejected me too. Just got the letter in the mail today.

Oddly enough the only email I got from them was the one saying “In the next two to four days, we will make two test deposits and two matching withdrawals to your funding account. “

    • coupon_clipper says:

Yup, I was rejected too “due to information received from ChexSystems”. And I haven’t tried to open a bank account in years!

  39. David says:

Would this be a good bank account to deposit $4k money order per month with?

  40. Jimmy says:

This bank is a disaster. Applied for an account. Got sent to a page to put in routing and transit for another bank, and told to wait a few days and then come back to verify the trial deposits. Trial deposits hit my other account but when I go back the Astoria page errors out. Get told I have to go into a branch. Go into the branch and they tell me to finish setting it up online. After 20 minutes of the branch banker being on hold they open the account. The next day I deposit $2400 cash to meet their min balance. Later that day I get a letter in the mail saying they declined to open an account for me. What the fuck…

    • Jason says:

“Trial deposits hit my other account but when I go back the Astoria page errors out.”

Me 2, I’ve tried to open the account three times already and every time I got this system message saying error or something.

  41. Saabfan says:

Data point: I was rejected maybe 2 months ago. However, i was accepted 2 days ago. It seems that they are not less stringent with the online verification.

  42. Kev says:

Anyone know if this is churnable? If so, how long should I wait?

I closed my account 2 weeks ago and would love to get this bonus again.

  43. averwind says:

These guys do Chex, I applied online a few months ago but was told to go to branch because of identity verification sheninigans. Went to branch spent 30 minutes, she left to talk to manager and manager came back with an upset face saying I had too much activity on my Chex reports and they don’t want me as a customer. Can’t really say anything to that, hate going to the branch for this very reason. Waste of time.

  44. Ann D says:

Opened a checking account in local Branch on last day of June Promo and funded with $2500.00.

Made 3 Direct Bill pay, each over $25.00 every month beginning in May, June and July.

$250.00 BONUS promptly posted today, 10 days after I fulfilled my direct bill obligation.

Astoria Bank is a community bank with courteous service. I will continue to bank here.

  45. jeein says:

Pull for Bank of America CC counts as bill pay, but pull for Chase CC doesn’t count. No idea why and at the end of the day I couldn’t get the bonus.

Had to mail a letter to close the account, and waiting for the check now.

    • Matt says:

Wait, so you didn’t get the bonus bc you used bill pay to pay Chase CCs? And met all other requirements? Did you escalate and ask for the bonus bc you clearly did the bill pays to a Chase CC?

  46. sam says:

    they have $350 now

  47. sam says:

    LOL, the craziest/funniest bank ever!
Me, my sister, and my brother tried to open account ONLINE – all were denied! My sister opened 2 accounts in 4 months with other banks, me same thing, and my brother. None of us have any negative and unpaid bills ever. We still waiting for their letter of explanation! They run ChexSystem they mentioned: No evidence of Asset Ownership, DDA closure Payment History, DDA Closure(s), Unique FI DDA Inquiry History. We have no idea what they are talking about, never seen such a thing in our lives. We checked our Credit Reports 8 months ago. We will see!

    • Eddy says:

Get a free copy of your ChexSystem report and review. It is NOT a credit report.

      • sam says:

“ChexSystems is classified as a consumer credit reporting agency” we ordered! Still waiting! We are sure nothing will be there! Because three different persons cannot have the same issues as Astoria bank mentioned!

  48. averwind says:

Waste of time… Automatically received direct deposit bonus $50 because that’s how I was fulfilling requirements. Today asked about where $250 bonus is and was told I can’t get it because I already received a bonus.

  49. Eddy says:

Opened my account Aug 1st 2500 dollars. Did three bill pay for each month aug, sept, oct. Last bill pay oct 6th, received bonus oct 13th. This bank is not set up for ach transfers so i am closing as soon as possible !!

  50. Mendel says:

    08/18/2016 ach $2500
    8/19 deposit $250

3 bill pays a month $25 x 3 each to chase credit card

    Received bonus $250 10/13

    Thanks!!!

  51. Saabfan says:

Anyone have any lucking closing these accounts without going into the branch?

  52. Jason says:

I wasn’t able to do this one as I got too many inquiries at that time. Checked again today, bonus reduced to $50 now, so unlikely they will have $200 – $300 in the future.

  53. K F says:

Received $250 bonus on 12/1/16 as “INTEREST CREDIT CASH BONUS NHA 2016”.

Made over three $25+ bill pays a month to three different cards.

Every two weeks I’d use Stripe to move $250+ into my account, labeled as direct deposit.

    Account opened in early September.
