Avoiding Fees

This account has no monthly fees or minimum balance requirements, I couldn’t find any mention of an early account termination fee but you’ll need to keep the account open until at least January 17th to receive the bonus.

Our Verdict

This is a pretty good bonus, it’s a soft pull and easy to keep the account fee free and you can fund $2,000 with a credit card. The only thing we don’t have much idea on is what counts as a direct deposit. If you can easily change your payroll, I’d recommend this bonus – otherwise it’s a case of whether you’re willing to take the risk or not as we won’t have any datapoints until after the promotion is over. We will add it to our best checking sign up page, but keep in mind the risk involved if you can’t change your payroll.

  1. VRHunter says:

I opened an account with them earlier this year.
CC funding limit was $2,000 (they accepted Visa, MC, Discover, AmEx).
Funded with Barclays Lufthansa – didn’t run as cash advance.
    No hard pull.
Mobile MO deposit friendly, stated limit is $7,500/month.
Good bank to work with so far.

    Is that “December 11th, 2015” a typo?

  3. Brian K says:

Is it possible to fund with Amex Business Rewards Gold since it is a charge card? There would be no risk of cash advance fees, right?

  4. Mark says:

Here is the response I received from Eastern Bank after I completed my application earlier today:

    Anyone try elan fidelity yet?

  6. Max says:

I just went through this application. So far no chance to use any sort of funding method

  7. Mark says:

Applied 9/14. Received denial letter today citing information received from Chex Systems. I may follow-up with Chex Systems as I ran into an issue with them last year when I applied for the Blue Hills bonus (the one with 10k in cc funding).

I re-applied with Blue Hills after speaking with Chex Systems and was subsequently approved.

I am not sure it is worth the hassle this time, although the 2k in cc funding is handy for all those new Amex cards.

    • FB says:

If you don’t mind saying – Is there account abuse on your Chex, or just too many inquiries?

      • Mark says:

With Blues Hills, it was simply a communication issue.

I have a request in to Chex Systems for my report. I am guessing it will show too many inquiries, but how many is too many?

  8. Dan Lee says:

I don’t believe CC funding is allowed anymore for this account. I applied online and got the same message as Mark and throughout the whole process it never mentioned funding the account. I received an approval letter in the mail to set up my account in branch. I went in today and set it all up and when it came to making the initial deposit I asked if I could use a credit card. The rep said I could but it would be coded as a cash advance. I still insisted using the the credit card but then the rep asked for my PIN for the credit card and at that point I decided to just fund the initial $25 with cash. It is possible that it would have coded as a purchase but I didn’t want to run the risk.(My cash advance limit on Chase is set to $100 as they wouldn’t let me put it any lower). After my account was created, I decided to call customer service and they told me funding with a credit card is not allowed. Hope this helps others and at least I still get $100 bonus(Don’t really think it’s worth unless you are close to a branch).

  9. Eddy Cue says:

Applied for their checking account! and it went pending online. Received a letter in the mail stating a denial based on information from Chexsystems. It’s probably due to the number of inquiries as I’ve opened a fair amount of accounts this year alone. It does give me an opportunity to request a copy of my report – so good news there

  10. Bungy says:

Denied as well. Applied online then went pending and was later sent a letter saying because of Chexsystems. I think I’m at around 12 banks for the year. This is my first hard rejection. HSBC has been elusive so I’m assuming a soft denial from them as well. Though I was approved for east Hampton bank before applying to Eastern Bank.

$100 signup is so-so, we all want the $2000 CC funding. I’ll try next year ^_^

  11. CR7 says:

Applied last week and went to the branch today. Direct deposit posts next Friday so I’ll keep you posted. I’m a bit lost with the wording, do they want a deposit of 100$ monthly until January or all I need is ONE 100$+ deposit?

  13. Frank says:

This may be a silly question. If I sign up in person, will they still use Chex System?

  14. Sexy_Kitten7 says:

Also denied due to Chex 🙁 I open a dozen accts a year.

  15. Frank says:

DP: Eastern Bank will only allow the new account to be funded by cash advance from a ATM withdrawal.

I showed up in person and was denied due to Chex System. I have no negative remarks in my Chex report, it probably showed that opened 10 accounts in the past 12 months. I cant stand the Chex System. Its my money in the account, they have zero risk. Whats so bad about churners? I get something, they get something.

  16. Kaztrator says:

Does anyone know if you can fund with AmEx?
