Avoiding Fees

They offer a free checking account with no monthly fees to worry about. I wasn’t able to find the fee schedule so I’m unsure if any early account termination fees are charged or not. Update: According to this the fee schedule is $25 if closed within 180 days.

Our Verdict

Quite a few requirements for the bonus, but worth it if you live near a branch. Upside is that at least  you don’t need to worry about any monthly fees. Free gifts aren’t anything special, but you should be able to find something at least somewhat useful. We will be adding this to our list of the best bank account bonuses.

    Hey Will,

Great bonus! I opened an account in branch despite like 16 Chex inquiries in the last 6 months. Soft pull. Opening was quick and easy, debit card instantly issued (I think a lot of local MA banks do the same thing as they all instantly issue cards with no raised digits).

Free gift was a choice between flash light, screw driver with lots of heads, tupperware set, chip/dip container, and mason jars.

Bonus posted a few days ago. Considered closing, but when I searched here https://ebsbdirect.com/uploads/documents/agreements-and-disclosures.pdf on page 23 I can see there is an early closing fee of $25. Lasts 180 days.

Thanks! I probably wouldn’t have found that otherwise.

Thanks. But corrections: the page is on Page 26, “Account Closing within 180 Days
      ……………………………………………………………………………… $25.00”

      Here is my data point:
      Opened on 6/10
Bill pay and debit spending within days after open
      several employer DD
      Bonus posted on 8/18

  3. Adam says:

Opened in branch a week or so ago. The guy was very friendly but went so slow. It took about half an hour to enter all my data, which I probably could have done in 5 minutes myself. Debit card issued on the spot (screen printed, not embossed). Funded with cash. Free gift options were tupperware set or car multitool.

  4. BOS George says:

Got my tupperware set! Incredible how long it took to open this account in-branch. I probably could’ve opened 10 MTB accounts with time to spare.
