[LA, MS, FL] First Bank and Trust $300 Checking Bonus

FL may no longer work.

Reposting and adding to our best bank bonus page now that it is confirmed soft pull.

Offer at a glance

  • Maximum bonus amount: $300

  • Additional requirements: Open green checking
  • Hard/soft pull: Soft pull
  • ChexSystems: Unknown
  • Credit card funding: None
  • Monthly fees: $12, avoidable
  • Early account termination fee: Six months, bonus forfeit + $25 fee
  • Household limit: None

The Fine Print

  • To receive a $300 Account Opening Bonus, you must establish qualifying Direct Deposits of at least $500 per monthly statement on your account within 60 days of account opening. Qualifying Direct Deposit are deposits from an electronic ACH paycheck, pension, or government benefit (like Social Security) from an employer or the government.
  • Direct Deposits do not include deposits made by an individual such as via online banking, account transfers, or a payment provider such as Paypal.
  • The $300 Bonus shall be paid through a credit to your account within 90 days if the Direct Deposit has been established and deposits have been made and verified.
  • If your checking account is closed within six (6) months of account opening, a $25 early closure fee and the $300 Bonus will be deducted at account closing.
  • Customers who have closed their account in the previous 90 days or with a negative balance are not eligible. Trust, fiduciary, and business accounts are not eligible for this account.
  • All bank account bonuses are treated as income/interest and as such you have to pay taxes on them

Avoiding Fees

Early Account Termination Fee

If you close your account within six months you will forfeit the $300 bonus and have to pay a $25 fee.

Green Checking Account $12 Monthly Fee

The monthly fee on this account is waived if you have a daily balance of $1,500+

Our Verdict

Nice big bonus, that’s what I love to see! This is worth signing up for if you’re eligible in my opinion as it’s one of the bigger bonuses and it’s a soft pull. Added it to our best checking bonus page to reflect this.

Big thanks to reader, Curmudgeon who let us know. Learn how to find bonuses and contribute to the site here.

  1. Ben says:

How did you find out that this is applicable to Florida? When trying to open an account, all the zip codes start with a 7, and there are no zip codes in FL that start with a 7….they all start with a 3 (plus I don’t recognize any of the cities). There is an option for “Other” in the zip code drop down.

I looked at their locations. There is one (normal) Florida branch in Destin which is not close to me at all. But there are Mortgage Loan Production Offices in my hometown. Sorta tempted to try it, but would like to find out if its a hard pull first (otherwise, that’s just too many unknowns for me).

    • al260513 says:

I entered one of the defined zip codes in the dropdown and then proceeded with my FL home address and zip code.

No cc funding. Only ach transfer.

I got a screen at the end congratulating on successfully opening. Not able to get into online banking due to needing an account number which I did not get. Might be emailed/mailed?

creditkarma and show no hard pulls.

      • al260513 says:

Now received an email saying application incomplete and to contact banker..

      • al260513 says:

        Update from FL zip code.

Account closed after having successfully opened and funded with $100 ACH.

Was sent letter of closure and $100 check due to not within service area.

    • Honestly I can’t remember how I determined the location eligibility, I think based on where they have branches but not 100% sure.

    • artgriego says:

I could not proceed after selecting “Other”:

“Thank you for considering First Bank & Trust. We are unable to open online accounts outside of our market area at this time. If you would like to open an account, please visit any one of our locations. For questions please call Customer Service at 504-584-5970.”

    • Jonathan says:

All of the zips are in LA. Not sure what this means in terms of availability.

  2. It takes a Whitney Banker says:

I will be doing this today to test it out as I’m in NOLA. Will report any results on HP, CC Funding, Etc

    • Chris says:

Please do. I called them twice this morning at two different numbers to ask if they do HP, SP or Chex. and did not get a satisfactory answer…

    • Ralph says:

LOL at the Whitney banker opening up an FB&T checking account…

    • Reg says:

Terrible hijack of this thread, but if I have a Whitney banker, I need to ask:

The targeted savings bonus that only requires you to have a certain balance on a certain date (for example “on March 31st”).

Does that mean you only have to maintain the balance for the one day?

Here is the DOC link: /la-ms-fl-al-tx-hancock-whitney-bank-100-savings-bonus-targeted/

I haven’t ever seen an answer for this.

      • Natalia says:

Technically YES. Practically I did a bit longer.
I held required balance for a few days but no more than 3.

        • Reg says:

Natalia, thanks so much for the DP.

          1) Did you get this bonus?

          2) Do you remember how long it took to receive the bonus?

3)Was it posted to the account or sent as a gift card?

          • Natalia says:

            1. Yes I got $100.00 Bonus for the saving account.
            2. I do not recall exactly, it was either last days of April or first few days of May.
            3. In a form of $100 generic visa gift card

*** It came in a SMALL envelope, and could of been easily confused for a junk mail.

          • Natalia says:

Sorry forgot to include the important date:
the bonus qualification way was March 31

        • Reg says:

William, these comments from Natalia should be nominated for best comments. They are really informative and help people trying to get involved in bank bonuses.

I think this info should also be added to the [targeted] Whitney savings bonus post.

    • Thanks, looking forward to the DP!

  3. Mr. Poster says:

All you can do is submit your information online, you can’t open the account today.

“Thank you for submitting an online account opening application with First Bank and Trust. Your application has been submitted for further review. A banker will contact you within 24 hours (or the next business day) of your application submittal. If you have questions or need further information, please contact us toll free at 1-877-426-2498 or 504-584-5970.”

  4. Brian says:

I tried with other and it was your not eligible and I agree I live in Florida and I didn’t see any Florida zip code the branch in Florida has this address 495 Grand Blvd, Suite 270 Miramar Beach, FL 32550

    • jackgopack4 says:

I put 70001 in the drop down list then filled in my Pensacola zip code in the full information and my application was accepted. Of course Miramar Beach is only about 45min-1hr away from me

      • JuicyJosh says:

Did you have to call in and speak with a banker like al260513 mentioned above? Other than that, funding process started and account issued? Im in Jax. Def want to give it a shot but was holding DPs from those that applied already.

        • jackgopack4 says:

Did not, although I presume it was due to my proximity to the branch. I had another bank recently that the nearest branch was Destin and I avoided any issues opening like other people in central or east Florida had.

          • JuicyJosh says:

Thanks for the info. I think i just need to go for it. Doubt any extra inquiries will hurt at this point.

    • Brian says:

So interesting DP I said screw it and tried to apply and just picked a zip code. Once I was in the application it self I could not find the green account to select so I didn’t complete the application. The bank noticed I did not complete the app and emailed me so I said whatever and called in. The csr asked where I was living so I said Florida and she asked what city and I said Orlando. Apparently someone else in Orlando asked about this (Hello fellow churner) and said they are having IT add more zip codes. So maybe Florida will work even if not close to the panhandle. If anyone saw the green checking account as a option to select let me know.

  5. FiSnowball says:

About to jump into the fine print myself, is the requirement a $500 a one time DD or must it be recurring monthly?

“Receive a qualifying direct deposit of $500+ within 60 days of account opening”

“You must establish qualifying Direct *Deposits of at least $500 *per monthly statement* on your account within 60 days of account opening.”

    • Chris says:

I’m pretty sure, it means just one DD is enough…or two in the same monthly statement totaling 500 plus. But I’ll just do one (a real one) for 500.

  6. Michael says:

What I want to know is can I go in branch and do this if I don’t live anywhere near a branch…. I’ll be in New Orleans in two weeks, would be a nice little bonus on my trip 😀

  7. Yan says:

Unable to open account in FL.

“Thank you for considering First Bank & Trust. We are unable to open online accounts outside of our market area at this time. If you would like to open an account, please visit any one of our locations. For questions please call Customer Service at 504-584-5970.”

    • JuicyJosh says:

I wouldn’t necessarily count us Floridians out yet. Lets see DPs from those who applied earlier. Often banks use that tool to dissuade the out of area app but can get around using diff zip on tool and legit zip on app.

  8. Chris says:

    Hard/soft pull: Unknown
    ChexSystems: Unknown
    Anyone with DP??

  9. GP says:

I live in New Orleans and opened an account online today. I noticed the fine print said only one cash bonus per household.

  10. jackgopack4 says:

Anyone find the touting/transit number anywhere?

I opened an account (Pensacola, FL) but cannot for the life of me find that info on their website and it’s too late to call right meow.

    • jackgopack4 says:

Various third party sites say 065002289 so I’ll try a small transfer from my USAA first

    • JuicyJosh says:

Do I look like a cat to you, boy? Am I jumpin’ around all nimbly bimbly from tree to tree? Am I drinking milk from a saucer? Do you see me eating mice?

  11. Kyle B says:

Just called a customer service rep. She said that is a recurring $500 direct deposit every month, not just a one time thing in order to get the bonus.

  12. JuicyJosh says:

Applied last night, opened and funded. The terms stated inside the application process did a monthly statement cycle of a $500 DD in first 60 days and bonus posts at 90 days. Also terms said this is verified. Not sure with size of the bank if they have same resources as other to systematically post bonuses or reviewed by person. I will do legit DD for this. I got approved with a ton of inquiries so have no hesitation. App also says one bonus per household but I will happily test that after receiving first bonus.

    • JuicyJosh says:

Also wanted to mention when going through online enrollment/debit card preferences it said the bank gives you a dime for every signature based transaction you complete. Never seen a bank do that before? I don’t plan on using the card but wonder if it works for $0.50 Amazon reloads.

  13. David says:

Do the monthly direct deposits need to be at least $500 apiece? Or can they be several DD’s totaling $500 or more? I’d like to DD my Uber earnings, but I don’t make more than $500 per pay period.

  14. Jackson says:

Applied just now online – OPENED. I’m not in any of the states listed although I do have a Florida address as I snowbird there sometimes.

Here are a few points –

1)Make sure you apply for the GREEN CHECKING.
2)Use the first zip code on the list from Louisiana, application should proceed.
3)I had trouble with the next e-consent page; I clicked DECLINE as page would not allow me to click AGREE; application moved forward. Note: There are other places in the application process where you can consent to e-statements, etc.
4)Use your actual address from one of the states listed, even though you used a Louisiana zip code to begin the application.
5)Must pass onlinine verification “if it’s you” total of 4 questions from your credit history, etc. Mine was rather easy.
    6)Take screenshots along the way.

Account will open, account number will be provided at end.

PS-Doc, I apologize for my innapropriate language a few days ago. The short story is that it was a case of mistaken identity, and I am sorry for the emotional outburst. The timing of my post, and the subsequent email I received made me think it was you. I was wrong (obviously).

    • RB says:

How many account numbers did it give you? For some reason it gave me 2 account numbers while I opened only 1 account. It said the below. I have just entered X’s in place of the account numbers.

Your new account numbers are XXXXXXXXX|XXXXXXXXXX

Also, looks like they will send an email with a verification link to verify the initial trial deposits to the initial funding source you used. Only after you have verified they will pull out money from your funding bank account. Looks like till then you cannot setup online banking. Still have not received any trial deposits to my funding bank account.

    • Ian says:

what did you use for DD?

  15. scott says:

I live in FL but I think I’ll wait until I see more DP’s on central and southern Floridians getting approved for this. I was declined by M&T the other day so I don’t want to waste any more inquiries.

    • Poster nutbag says:

      Who gets declined by M&T???

      • Stammers95 says:

I actually did at first when I first heard about M&T bonuses and lived completely out of state (NC). I actually had to wait 30 days before resubmitting application and what I found out was that I was using my parents’ home address in NY as the physical address and then during the verification questions it used my parents address as part of the questions. What I didn’t realize was that with M&T I just needed to be honest and use all my correct information and their system just passed it through. So I guess every bank handles these online applications differently and the key is to see if there is a loop hole in their application process to allow out of state applications.

Scott – If you haven’t been locked out of M&T yet (only 2 tries) and you made the mistake I did just use all of your correct information as if M&T was located in your own state. I also used the incognito mode as well (not sure if it matters or not but I found a DP to use that mode).
Im thinking of trying for this bonus even though I live in a state that’s not even part of their footprint. We shall see.

        • scott says:

Everything I entered was correct. I also tried using incognito mode. I’ve read other out of state posters also recently saying they were declined. Maybe M&T has changed their practices.

          • Stammers95 says:

Well I can tell you that they havent bc I just opened a M&T account on Monday and got my bonus from they today and I have alot of inquires on my Chex report. Must be something else.

  16. James says:

Word of warning. If you don’t finish your application, they will take it upon themselves to open your account.

I was originally doing my application and got to the funding page but stopped because I didn’t have a check on me at the time and they don’t let you fund with a debit card. I saved my application and but didn’t actually complete it. I decided this bonus wasn’t worth the trouble and I would just let my application drop off.

A few days later on Friday, all of a sudden I got an email saying congrats that my account has been opened. It’s all screwed up now, I don’t have an account number or a way to enroll in online banking. I’m going to try to call in on Monday to see what’s going on.

    • NN says:

do you live in the targeted area ?

      • James says:

No. I selected a random zip code and then entered my real one in the application. I’m in Florida but not in any city where there are branches.

        • NN says:

I’m in similar situation like you, LA but not near the cities they list, still thinking whether or not to go for it.
oh well, I think I’ll pull the trigger tomorrow. at this point 1 more Chex inquiry doesn’t matter much, I guess.

  17. jp says:

I followed the suggestion @jackgopack4 mentioned by selecting the first 70001 in the dropdown list, the application is accepted and gave me a 9-digit|10-digit number for my account. Couldn’t enroll for online banking at this time though. The Customer Rep says have to wait til the account is funded.

    Hope this helps.

  18. scott says:

I just applied from FL and was approved.

  19. Yan says:

Approved (with the tips from “Jackson), funded account, setup online banking. Real location FL 33609

    THEN I got this email:

“We have received an application that you submitted through our website for Green Checking Account with $300 Bonus with qualifying direct deposit.. All online applications are subject to geographic and residency requirements.

We are unable to process your application to open a deposit account with First Bank and Trust due to your application not meeting our residency and geographic limitations. Your address is outside of First Bank and Trust’s current defined market area.

If you have any questions regarding this notice, please feel free to contact us at the address or phone number below. We appreciate your choosing First Bank and Trust and submitting your application. Thank you.”

  20. Liz says:

Located in Tampa, FL and while I initially got it to work I got an email that I was out of the target area.

  21. Rocky says:

Still no email, but did login to see my account had been deactivated. I called and “out-of-target area” was the response the CSR gave me. I tried to press as I do have a house 45 mins from their Destin location, but she said that this wasn’t a “branch” and only a loan office.

  22. JuicyJosh says:

+1 to recent posts for out of target area. No email yet but account opening deposit has yet to be withdrawn and phone rep alluded that non-Louisiana accts are still being reviewed despite providing account approval info.

    • JuicyJosh says:

Follow up: account closed. Letter sent to advise not in target area. Trial withdrawal returned via check. Funny enough I was in New Orleans suburb last week and drove by the branch I used the code for. Opted to not go in and say whats the deal and continued on my journey to Abita Brewery. Boo for no bonus.

  23. RB says:

DP: They cancelled my account as I live in FL. So, looks like FL is not part of the targeted area. They sent a trail deposit to my funding bank account which I verified using the link sent via email. Then I was able to sign up for online banking where it shows a balance of the trial deposit amount. Today that amount disappeared and when I called customer service I was told that my address did not belong to the targeted area. So, they closed the account and cut me a check for the trail deposit amount of less than $1.

Anyone outside of the targeted area please do not apply. That will be a waste of a chex system inquiry I think.

  24. Natalia says:

6/27 It seems they have opened the account for me.
Had some issue getting account access ( took 24 hours)
Haven not received a single e-mail yet.
I have yet to see the initial deposit posted or taken out of my funding account.

6/29 However !!!! They took some change out of the funding account I provided for initial deposit.
NO small deposit deposit ONLY a small withdrawal, be aware, it is a small amount, but who knows how low you may be running that account ? !

    • Natalia says:

Went to the bank today. 7/6
According to associate they having difficulties ever since they implemented the “green checking”.
I still have not received a single e-mail nor funding on my “green” account.

They stated I was suppose to verify the initial withdrawals (from my funding account) and there were suppose to be initial deposits equal to the same amount. None of this happened. Associate was puzzled and called numerous departments, nobody was able to help or answer why they can not send me emails for verification or any emails at all.
The best answer about email is they keep saying check your junk folder; but it is not there!
Associate suggested to write them a check and make the initial deposit right there, but I am still not sure if my initial funding will go through (since not even a banker can clearly tell me what is going on), and do not want to risk to overdraw my funding account.

She stated I have till July 26 to fund the account, or it will be closed by system for not being funded.

  25. Deal says:

I got 2 account numbers when I was approved. But I am still not able to enroll in online banking after validating the trail deposit. What are these 2 account numbers. Are these routing number and account number? First number is 9 Digit and second number is 10 digit.

  26. Div says:

DP: I opened the account last month being from out of state and received an email that I am not eligible for $300 bonus. I just googled and provided another code which has not mention the region specific terms. After meeting the requirements of 15 transaction and $100 DD I got the bonus $150. Also, I got the $50 for using the referral link from Doc’s referral thread. I assume the other also received the $50 Visa gift card bonus as well

Offer code: MGR150, Expiration date: Aug-31-2017, try sending this code and ask them to change it on the account.

Don’t forget to use the referral link to open the account to get $50 for both parties.

  27. Brian says:

I basically had this same data point expect I live in Orlando Florida and when I talked to them they where like Orlando should be ok

  28. Jonathan says:

Any data points on what counts as DD?

  29. J says:

Live in NOLA, thinking of opening an account. It looks like there’s a minimum daily balance of $1,500 to avoid the monthly $12 fee? Any way around this? Seems like a lot to hold in the acct for that fee

    • jackgopack4 says:

I did not see any other way to avoid the fee.
I calculate it more as a comparable interest rate; if I have to keep the account open for 6 months I am earning 40% APY on $1,500. Way better than most investments even.

  30. Paul says:

    Any update on DD?

  31. Dave C says:

It appears the DD need to be recurring monthly. Is that really the case or can we just do one?

  32. vince says:

Anyone know when the minimum daily balance counter starts? A few CSR said the timer starts the second an initial deposit hits but the maximum initial deposit is $300 and they require $1500 DAILY BALANCE to waive fees… so in order to hit the $1500 minimum balance I’d have to do another deposit after the initial deposit and given the 2-3 waiting window for ACH transfers… this would mean I would never actually hit the DAILY BALANCE of 1500 to waive fees.

  33. Stacy says:

Dead deal? I don’t see any promotion on their site.

    • I still see it, it’s quite discrete. It says “This account pays you with tiered interest earnings, unlimited transactions, and, for a limited time, a $300 Bonus will be paid when you establish qualifying Direct Deposit1 on your account.”

  34. Marques says:

Figure I’ll share my experience. Opened account using link in post around the end of June. I had to go to the local branch and sign the reg card and let them copy my driver’s license. I set up the initial funding of the account and it never pulled so I just ended up sending $1,500 from my Chase account. Setup the direct deposit at work. Fast forward till now and my math says I’m past 100 days when it says it should post within 90. I emailed a rep who emailed me to check and see if I had any questions when I first signed up and got no reply after a week. I emailed the customer service email address and got no response. I called the customer service number 2 days ago and got someone who transferred me to the local branch. That person did an account review and said it looks like I met all the requirements but she had to check with the department who handles this and get back to me. She called me yesterday and stated that the 90 day clock starts from the first qualifying direct deposit and not account opening. That would put the 90 day window closing at mid/late October. She then told me the bonus would then post 7-10 days after that. I check my account today and the funds are pending in there.

All in all a positive and easy experience. I get the feeling that the bonuses aren’t automatic like capital one and instead are reviewed/decided by someone at your local branch or someone in their corporate office. I say that to say if someone is reviewing qualifications then it may be heard to slide non direct deposits through. They have a nice asset size but they have a small community bank feel to them.

  35. Ben says:

Opened account end of June. Have been making payroll deposits since then. I just received bonus 10/13. Thanks Doc!

  36. Ian says:

any DPs on what counts as DD (other than actual DD)?
