[YMMV] Huntington Bank $300 Checking Promotion, No Direct Deposit Requirement [OH, MI, IN, PA, KY, WV]

Update: This might be a targeted promotion as the mail out for this offer did include a unique promo code. I don’t see anything on the landing page that states it actually needs to be applied but YMMV as always. Additionally normally Huntington Bank offers pre-populate the promo code and this one doesn’t.

  • Direct deposit required: None
  • Additional requirements: Deposit $1,000/$2,000
  • Hard/soft pull: Soft
  • ChexSystems: Unknown
  • Credit card funding: None
  • Monthly fees: None-$5, avoidable
  • Early account termination fee: None
  • Household limit: None

The Offer

Direct link to offer

  • Huntington Bank is offering two bonuses on it’s checking accounts, they are as follows:
    • Open a new Huntington 5 Checking account and receive a $300 bonus when you make $2,000 in deposits within 60 days of account opening
    • Open a new Asterisk-Free Checking account and receive a $150 bonus when you make $1,000 in deposits within 60 days of account opening

The Fine Print

  • Your bonus will be deposited into your new checking account within 14 days of meeting the above requirements.
  • Unfortunately, this offer is not available to existing checking customers, including fiduciaries, or those with checking accounts closed within the last six months.
  • Huntington reserves the right to limit each customer to one new account related gift incentive per calendar year
  • This offer is only available to applicants residing in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia.
  • Remember, for tax purposes you will receive a Form 1099-INT from us for your cash bonus

Avoiding Fees

Asterisk Free Checking $0 Monthly Fee

This account has no monthly fee

Hunting 5 Checking

This account has a $5 monthly fee, this is waived with a total relationship balance of $5,000+

Early Account Termination Fee

There is no early account termination fee

Our Verdict

For whatever reason Illinois and Wisconsin residents are not eligible for this bonus (they were recently added to the $200 bonus). This is the best ever bonus Huntington Bank have offered (apart from the $350 targeted offer). This bonus is pretty insane as it doesn’t really have any requirements for the bonus apart from depositing the $2,000 for the $300 bonus. Keeping it fee free is a little bit annoying, but you can always close the account after getting the bonus and eat the fees for a few months. This is definitely one of the best checking bonuses currently available. They also have a business checking bonus for $500 that’s worth doing.

  1. Frito Pendejo says:

Well I just signed up for the $200 one earlier today. I wonder if its possible to do both.

  2. perfectviking says:

I would assume IL and WI aren’t included because FirstMerit isn’t completely integrated yet.

  3. Jerry M says:

Hope they also include Illinois like the previous $200 offer.

  4. Scott says:

What about if we have a sole proprietor business account but no personal account? Thoughts?

  5. Bob Newbie says:

Any data points from anyone that received a bonus for the business checking and then afterwards received a personal checking bonus?
I did the $500 business checking offer in January, i’m not sure if that would qualify me as an existing checking account customer since it’s a business checking.

    • Denny says:

Yes, I recently received both the business and the personal bonuses. Business is set up as an LLC with its own FEIN.

      • Bob Newbie says:

Hmm thanks. I’m a sole-proprietorship so it would probably be different.
I gave them my FEIN but I think they ended up using my Soc #.

        • MJG says:

I did it the other way around (personal bonus then business) and both bonuses paid out. Worked fine with my sole prop business. I have an EIN but I’m not sure they used it and at any rate they put my SSN in and even connected the business account to my personal account (same login).

          • Bob Newbie says:

I might try it then. So i’m assuming since the accounts are linked they count for the $5,000 relationship bonus? So you wouldn’t need $5,000 in both accounts?

          • Bob Newbie says:

I received the bonus. I already had the $500 business checking under my Soc #, I bought a code for the $300 personal checking off EB for $6.
Received the bonus 3 days after the deposit cleared.

  6. Kevin says:

Is there no promo code for this offer? I see a spot on the application to put one.

    • MarcoPolo says:

Previous $200 bonus link auto-populates the promotion code field.
I think you’ll need a promotion code for this offer to work.
Maybe DoC need to rethink this deal?

      • Kevin says:

I agree – all of the Huntington offers auto populated the promotion code on the application page. Neither of these offers do this.

    • Steve says:

When I received the mailer, it came with a promo code and this link. I would think it is targeted but DoC also mentions YMMV.

  7. Lucas says:

Is it one per household? My wife has, I do not..

  8. Bob says:

I just applied for the $200 promotional offer yesterday (3/29/17), and today they come with $300 offer.

Can i be matched? If yes, whom to call?

    • Ben says:

I’m in the same boat, I was thinking about calling, but figured that I would rather take the $200 that is basically guaranteed to post rather than have someone mess with the promotion and possibly complicate things.

  9. Guy Bucktastik says:

After getting bonus for the 5 account, you can immediately downgrade it to an asterisk free checking account. I did this on the phone, super easy.

I may keep the account as a hub, the ACH transfers push and pull super fast with no fees.

  10. John says:

If any of you have taken advantage of the offer from the web link with no promo code, please post if/when you get the bonus. $2,000 (non-direct) deposit is super easy and quick to get, so hopefully we have some DPs in a few weeks, since the bonus is supposed to post within 14 days. I’m skeptical that it would be applied without any promo code.

  11. TWoK says:

I didn’t want to risk missing out on any bonus, so I bought a coupon code on eBay for $15. $285>$200

  12. Chris says:

Debating on signing up my Wife for the Check-5 Plan, even though she’s already tied to my/our JOINT Checking Account… I wonder if I can remove her first =P

Since this wouldn’t really cost anything, I feel like its a good chance to ‘take one for the team’ for a future DP.

  13. Steve says:

I got my $300 bonus 8 days after my ally transfer of $2K.

I’m going to try downgrading tomorrow as someone else suggested.

  14. Matt K says:

DP of successfully received bonus using only link (without using a code)? Afraid I jumped on this too early.

  15. Bob Newbie says:

Data point: I already have the $500 bonus business checking account with my soc # attached to it.
I bought a $6 personal checking code off EB just to be safe, opened up personal checking.

    4/14: $2K posted
    4/18: Received $300 bonus

So it looks like having a business checking with them doesn’t disqualify you from receiving this bonus. I even have them under the same login.

  16. John says:

Data point: I bought a $5 code off eBay. Finished my $2k deposit (MS deposits, actually) on 4/14. $300 bonus posted on 4/18. I previously had a Huntington checking account, but closed it at least 6 months ago, and I think more than 1 year ago (though I can’t remember when exactly).

  17. Gary says:

So I signed up for this as soon as I saw this page for the $300, and didn’t realize until after the fact that a code was required. I explained to branch managers, and CSR’s that the $300 offer was public on their website, and nowhere did it say a code was required, but they didn’t budge.

Long story short, they became great to work with and honored the $300 bonus after a CFPB was filed!

  18. Information Booth says:

I also applied for the $300 bonus w/o a code and haven’t got the bonus. I called the bank and the csr asked me for the promo code I used. Where in the fine print does it say I needed a code? And what was the code? Csr is filing a grievance on my behalf. I’ll let y’all know what happens.

  19. Upset with Hton says:

I applied for the 300 bonus as well. Was denied because ‘Huntington was not aware of this promo’ yet the link provided here was a Huntington link. Since then, the link has changed. I would like to know more about the CFPB complaint Gary made.
