The Fine Print

  • Present the $150 promotional offer when opening a new FNB personal checking account online (Freestyle, Mystyle, Lifestyle or Premierstyle).
  • A $50 minimum deposit is required when opening an account online. To receive the $150 reward, the following conditions must be satisfied: 1) set-up and have a qualifying direct deposit(s) totaling $1,500 or greater made to your new personal checking account within the first 90 days after account opening online; and 2) your account must be in good standing once the above conditions are satisfied.
  • Then your $150 reward will be credited to this open account on the next business day following the 90 days after account opening.
  • Your qualifying direct deposit(s) needs to be an electronic-type deposit, similar but not limited to, paycheck, pension or government benefits (such as Social Security) from your employer or other affiliated depositors.
  • Offer valid for new personal checking accounts opened July 1, 2016 through September 16, 2016.
  • Offer subject to change without prior notice and may be terminated or extended based on response.
  • Offer does not apply to multiple checking accounts.
  • Existing FNB checking accounts or accounts converting to another personal checking account are NOT eligible for this offer.
  • You can receive only one new checking account reward related offer per household per calendar year
  • Bank employees and members of their household are not eligible for this promotion.
  • All bank account bonuses are treated as income/interest and as such you have to pay taxes on them

Avoiding Fees

The easiest account to keep fee free is Freestyle checking, there is no monthly fee as long as you have eStatements enabled. There is an early account termination fee of $50 if the account is closed within 180 days.

Our Verdict

Pretty good bonus with no requirements to keep the account fee free, the credit card funding is nice as well. The real questions are: is it available nationwide or only in select states and more importantly is it a soft pull? If anybody knows, please let us know in the comments. It will likely be added to our best bonus page if it is a soft pull.

    I got a targeted promotion while back (about 4 months back) for someone in my household from this bank. Pretty much same requirements. at that I inquired and they mentioned chex system. Hopefully that’s still the case.

    The big question is if ACH counts as DD. My HR manager will likely shoot me on site if I ask to change payroll again. 🙂

      Lol I’ve changed mine 7 times in the last year. I think she knows what I’m doing but I give her candy so it’s a win win. 😉

      Glad my employer allows me to change DD anytime online and up to 7 banks yay.
      Only problem is they don’t have routing numbers of many of the banks that have promotions, so I have to ask them to manually add the routing number every time I open a new checking account (almost every month lol).

      Hope this works in Colorado.

      Haha. I go out of my way to be extra nice and generous with the Payroll dept across the hall. Doughnuts and Coffee out of pocket ~once a week from that guy changing DD details from time to time. Don’t think they really think too much into my changes every 3 or 4 months.

    I’m dreading the day I’ll have to leave my company….I can change my payroll DD online anytime I want. And up to 3 different banks! Lol just wish my paycheck was more.

    I just submitted the application and it went through, even though I live in Illinois, where there are no branches. The application was quite easy and smooth. Only complication was they were unable to verify my identity by asking questions, so I had to take a picture of my drivers license, and upload it to the submitted application.

    Just signed up from CA and application went through. It provided me with an account number as well. Used my Amex Platinum to fund the account. I’ll report back if anything goes wrong.

    Was able to open in NJ. Got a/c number and it’s pending staff review. Did not see any alerts for TU through sesame and experian through their apps (was instant for last cc apply) so unless this hits equifax it is going to be a chex pull. Can confirm in a day or two.

    Members need to be very aware WHICH “First National Bank” they are signing up with. Almost any big city has a “First National Bank”. Not all are related to this bank.

    Opened online via Kansas today. Used AMEX Platinum Mercedes Benz and pending as “FIRST NATIONAL BANK” purchase.

    Will see if they pull a seacoast bank on us or not (refuse to honor/decline due to out of market).

    Is one able to reduce the cash advance limit on an American Express card? I just chatted up a rep on my account with the chat service and she said it wasn’t possible, but that cash advance fees are only charged when the card is used at an ATM. Any other data points? I’d love to go for this bonus and work towards an AMEX min spend for a bonus, without any fees.

      So I guess my updated question is – has anyone been tagged with cash advance fees or using an AMEX card to open a bank account? Because the rep I chatted up said it should only occur at an ATM, but I find that unlikely.

        John K – AMEX is fine with this specific bank at this time. I even tried it myself with my AMEX Plat and it coded as a purchase not CA.

        With most banks, AMEX codes as cash advance so just check the data points prior to.

      How do you know that you were denied due to CHEX inquiries or issues? – were you denied during the online application or afterwards manually by a phone call or email from an employee?

    I called the Bank. They stated that initial deposit($499) would be on hold for 30 days and could not be withdrawn! Is this normal & legal for the US?

    Concerned with the above reports that this is not national and they they will close my account post acceptance.

    I think they may have canceled their offer and closed my account. I successfully opened my account this morning and funded with Chase Freedom. I received emails to this effect. I set up online banking and logged in successfully.

    I just logged in a few minutes ago to see if my initial deposit had appeared as pending (it wasnt showing up at all in the morning) & there is a message saying my account has been disabled.I get an email a few seconds later saying “Online Banking access was suspended. This occurs when your User Name or Password is entered incorrectly multiple times” (which wasnt the case)

    I think they just reneged on their nationwide bonus offer

    I tried opening an account from TX earlier today. Just received an e-mail denying my application.

    Also just tried the link above again, no luck here either.

    Looks like they may be reneging on this offer.

    locked out too (even live within their footprint)-account is disabled and customer service reps say they aren’t sure why-said they’ll call me back “shortly”.

    In the meantime, got a pending charge for $499 and, presumably, a ChexSys inquiry for, maybe, no reason.

    I wonder if the accounts are in “review” and will get officially approved or this is the beginning of the shutdown process. Made the mistake of already setting up DD with Discover and $1500 is already on its way. Let’s hope no account closure!

    FWIW I called customer service again and they blamed online fraud for the delay and said that someone from their main office would call me by COB or on Monday- never mentioned the bonus but would like to know where my $500 opening deposit + DD are going…

    Anyone else notice the last sentence in the offer’s fine print said:

    “In the event that we determine in our sole discretion
    that your account does not meet the eligibility criteria or
    the activity on your account does not qualify to required conditions, we will not be obligated to credit your account with the reward payout.”

    Just to start a wild conspiracy theory:
    suppose the bank needs to temporarily boost their deposit reserves to meet a target in some upcoming reporting period, runs a promotion to attract quick deposits, locks the accounts (and the money) while they ‘investigate’ some so-called fraud with one or more of the accounts (Customer Serv told me that), and after the reporting period, cancels the accounts and returns the money?

    So they have my opening deposit and my direct deposit from my employer …. well that worked out really well.

    Just got a call from customer service (I was aggressive since I actually live in their service area and could plausibly claim to actually use their bank) and was told that they closing the account and refunding the balance as a result of a “business decision,” in light of the fact that I did not live near a branch. I pointed out that I do, in fact, live near a branch, but the rep did not buy it and repeated the party line; I think it is pretty probable that they are doing a mass shut-down of all new accounts opened under this promotion.

      Received a call that they made a “business decision” and refunded $499 on my credit card.
      They said the intended offer went outside the scope of those eligible for the promotion and it got posted on an internet forum. Wonder where? 😉

        Did you actually get the refund yet? When my “business decision” was made, they told me they’d have to call me back on an eta for the refund and wouldn’t go off script.

          Called them yesterday – CS rep had no idea why my account was suspended access – said she would have a higher up call me yesterday – of course no one called me yesterday so I get to call in and wait on hold for 15+ minutes again today.

          They have my employer direct deposit and my opening deposit. Absolutely lousy and going to get a CFPB complaint for this.

            CS rep says the higher up will contact today – they lied yesterday and never called me. So we will see. They still have my direct deposit money and my initial funding.

            Said that I am out of market so every single out of market account that was opened is now being closed – I said why would you do that and waste our time etc… had no idea why the application let non in-market applicants.

    Got a refund on the Amex Everyday. Never got a call or email from them. Tried logging into the account and was disabled as well. Can we ask them to remove the enquiry from Chex or dispute it with Chex systems?

      Absolutely you can try – they failed to state their requirements and cost you an inquiry – and money & time…

    I received my credit back without any manual intervention from me but the funny thing is this morning I received an email – “Your First National Bank eStatement is available”.

    How am I supposed to log in tocheck my statement when you revoked my access?

    Filed a compliant with the CFPB and the bank took their sweet time responding to the compliant. Once they did respond, I was told my account was closed due the information that I provided and that they refunded my money. In addition, they said that they tried to contact me about reopening the account, however they were unable to get a hold of me. Well that is untrue as no one ever reached out to me. They did however remove the Chex inquiry from my file
