The Fine Print

  • Offer not available to existing checking customers or to those with a Fifth Third checking account that has been closed within the last 12 months
  • Bonus offer not available to new Fifth Third Checking customers in St. Louis and Western Pennsylvania
  • Bonus offer available to new consumer checking customers, excluding Basic Checking and Express Banking
  • Bank reserves the right to limit each customer to one new account-related gift incentive per calendar year
  • ssential Checking account must be opened between 6/29/17 and 7/31/17
  • All requirements must be met and qualifying activity must be initiated and post to the account within 90 days of account opening to obtain $200 bonus
  • Bonus will be deposited into your new checking account within 10 business days of completing requirements
  • All bank bonuses are treated as interest and you’re required to pay interest on them

Avoiding Fees

The easiest option for most is to choose the Essential Checking account which has an $11 monthly fee. The fee can be waived by maintaining an average monthly balance of $1,500 or more across your savings and checking accounts.

The fine print indicates that the Military Banking and Student Banking accounts should also work for this bonus.

  • If you are in the military, choose the Military Banking option and you’ll have an additional option for getting the monthly fee waived by receiving $500 in direct deposits each month.
  • If you are a high school or college student age 16+, choose the Student Banking option for no monthly fee at all.

Our Verdict

This offer is almost always available (seems to disappear for a few days/weeks after it expires and then comes back). It’s great that you can open the account online and the bonus requirements are fairly easy to meet. Here’s what I’d do if I lived in the targeted area:

  • Open an essential checking account
  • Add $1,600 via a direct deposit method that has qualified in the past (this will keep the account fee free and also trigger the bonus requirement for direct deposit)
  • Pay three bills (total needs to be under $100 to keep the account fee free, or just add more funds initially and pay bigger bills)
  • Wait for the bonus to post
  • Withdraw funds and close account

Because this bonus is fairly easy to meet and we have lots of data points, I’ll be adding it to our list of the best checking bonuses.

Big thanks to reader, Vijay who let us know. Learn how to find bonuses and contribute to the site here.

im a student but i dont see where it says the student acount will receive the bonus, and also i dont see how to open a student account on the bonus offer page, any help if you dont mind? thanks

    • daxihe says:

Student checking accounts are Essentials checking accounts with fee waived. I opened it today and this is how it’s listed in online banking.

      • Phong says:

Wait how do you sign up for the student option? Or do you have to go into a branch and show them your student ID? Because I didn’t see that option when I signed up… Or at least I wasn’t pay attention to see if there was a student option.

  2. Rob says:

Wells Fargo ACH counts as a direct deposit. This worked for me.

  3. jay says:

As usual I can’t open this one.

Not available in my area as there is no branch.

  4. CtownBin says:

I did the Business Checking $400 bonus with Fifth Third back in November- the account is still open since the bonus hasn’t posted yet. Would I be able to get in on this offer, since that was for Business and this is consumer? Would I have a better chance if I waited until the first bonus posts, I close the account, and only then open this one? Obviously the 12-month rule would still not be met.

    • sara says:

This message is for CtownBin. I see you opened a Business Checking $400 bonus deal in November. I have as well and I am still waiting for them to payout! It says they will pay within 10 calendar days of meeting the requirements. Which I thought was strange they advertise it this way considering nothing happens on the weekends. I am within the 10 day window and have not received anything yet. Did you happen to call them? Let me know when you get yours!

    • sara says:

What was the date in November of when you opened it? Also…has it gone past the 10 calendar days for you?

    • sara says:

Did they make you open a Business Savings along with the checking? They told me this was required and now I am thinking it is not.

  5. B Z says:

Opened an account two weeks ago. Paypal withdrew $100. Made 3 bill pays to credit, each $10. Got the bonus after 2 business days.

  6. Rick says:

Just opened online, got to the account status page where I saw my account and routing number, but when I clicked “fund account” it said it could not be completed and that I had to go talk to someone in branch. This is rather frustrating, anyone know what might have happened?

  7. What…. I don’t understand why this is not available in Western PA. I have 5/3rd branches littered all over my city. Also, what’s up with the $1600 amount? Is that something from the terms that I just don’t see here other than at the verdict?

    • Benson Chambers says:

Fifth Third sold off their branches in Western PA and St Louis to another bank because of how unprofitable they were, essentially those areas are no longer part of Fifth Third’s footprint.

  8. Charles Chang says:

Opened an account on 01/07, did paypal verification and serve verification on 01/11 and paid 3 bills on 01/14.
My $200 bonus was posted on 01/19, viola! No actual DD or ACH, just the trial deposit.

  9. jay says:

Anyone who is not able to get past the zip code page because of no branch in area, did you try to use valid zipcode and then try to open account? will that work?

  10. daxihe says:

Actually… for bill pay requirement, I would just pay my self 1c, 2c and 3c with checks.

    • Wang says:

what do you mean 1c, 2c with checks? Does writing a check to yourself count?

      • daxihe says:

There’s an option to send bill payment to another person by sending him a check from the bank on behalf of me. Since it’s a part of the bill pay feature I guess it would be eligible. You would receive those checks in mail and I just deposited them to my account in another bank.

  11. Robert says:

I just opened online and funded but don’t know how to set up Online Banking.

I didn’t want a debit card so didn’t request one.

Do I just need to wait for something to come in the mail? Are they going to send a temporary card that will allow me to set up online banking? Is there any way I can set up my online banking right now or do I have to wait? All I have is my checking account number and routing number

Anyone else deal with the same thing?

    • daxihe says:

Instructions on the login page ask you to use your social to log in.

      • Kevin says:

I tried this and it told me I’m unable to reset my password online. I’m assuming an ATM card is coming in the mail and I’ll have to wait for that.

        • Mark says:

Having same issue. I am told I will have to go into a branch in order to set up online banking. CSR said I could use SS # for User ID, but that I’d need to go to branch to get password.

I did not request a debit/ATM card, because I didn’t think I’d need it. Now what? Nearest branch is a half hour away. Annoying.

          • Mark says:

Update: Called again and got a helpful CSR, and I am now able to access my account online. HOWEVER, I still don’t know my checking account number and they will not give it out over the phone. I either need to go to a branch or wait a month for my first statement. Not sure if I will incur fees during this time.

  12. Tim says:

What happens if you open an account in a qualifying state that you live in and then move to a non-qualifying state? This scenario assumes that the bonus has already been received. I’m looking for a valid excuse to close my account in a branch without having greed guilt written all over my face.

  13. lumangoy says:

is there a limit per household?

ie, can my SO and I sign up for a checking account and both receive the bonus once we meet the requirements?

    • Didn’t see anything about it being one bonus per household, so should be possible.

    • Tabitha says:

Did you try? And did your SO receive the bonus? I was just about to try it for mine.

    • Adam says:

I signed up back in March and got my bonus, then closed my account. My wife signed up in May and just got her first statement after meeting all the requirements and has not gotten the bonus. I signed up online. She signed up in-branch. The banker told her specifically when she was signing up that the bonus was only one per household, but I figured we’d give it a shot anyway. Looks like he was true to his word. She should have received the bonus by now.

  14. Chang says:

Opened the account online on 26th with initial funding from CapOne 360. It said, they will make an initial test deposit to the CapOne account and I will get an email with a link to verify the test deposit amounts. They made the test deposits on the same day but I still haven’t got any email.
Called them today and the lady just dont understand why would they make any deposit to another account- said repeatedly she dont see any activity in my 53 account and that she cant see my capone account. Refused to understand anything else. I had to hang up.

So how long did everyone else wait till you got the email to verify the test deposits?

  15. Sara says:

Anyone do the $400 bonus for opening a business checking? Having problems with bonus posting.

  16. Sara says:

DOC of Credit…what would you do? I signed up for the 5/3rd business checking bonus back in November. It said it would post within 10 calendar days of qualifying activity. I have never seen anything say this before because nothing happens on Saturday or Sunday. It should say 10 business days. Anyway…not posting…I called they said to wait longer. I shouldn’t have to since this was in the terms. What do you think I should do?

    • If it’s an issue for you, file a complaint with the CFPB. Just make sure you’ve followed the terms & conditions to the letter of the law as well though. I’d personally just wait a little longer, hasn’t been a huge amount of time.

  17. scott says:

Does anyone know how long you have to wait to close the account after getting the bonus? I don’t want to wait 9 months.

  18. Johnny says:

What does this part about the bill pays mean: “total needs to be under $100 to keep the account fee free”

Do they charge you extra to make larger billpays? I’m confused by this

    • Heather says:

In order to waive the monthly fee, your average balance needs to stay above $1500. He’s suggesting you deposit $1600 then pay out $100 or less in bills so that you meet the transaction requirement for the bonus AND your balance stays above $1500 in order to meet the fee waiver threshold.

  19. Rubic says:

I’ve made two $500 ACH transfers from my USAA checking, but they show up as:

Since my bonus hasn’t posted yet I’m guessing this won’t count as a Direct Deposit.

  20. Gina says:

So just to confirm…we can close our accounts after the bonus posts? Mine posted a few days ago and I’ve emptied the account to a zero balance. And how do we close it? Can I just send a secure message?

  21. gina says:

Well this is sad. I zereod out my balance because I was getting ready to close and I log in and see a negative balance. They sent me deluxe checks and charged me $25 for it and then hit me with overdraft fees! Disappointed. I hope they can fix this. Anyone else this problem?

  22. daxihe says:

For your information, this bank is sensitive to the number of ChexSystems inquiries.

  23. Tim says:

I see some people received their bonus’s fairly quick. I am trying to initiate direct deposit. My welcome email provided me with a routing # and the last four digits of my account #. I am unable to display my full account # online. I called CS and they would not provide me a # over the phone and was instructed to walk into a branch with ID or wait for my monthly statement. Is there another way?

    • Mark says:

Yes, there is! I had the same issue. First, you can wait a month after opening the account and the account number will be on the statement. I didn’t want to wait though, so I just wrote a check to myself (from another bank) and did the mobile deposit. On the online deposit slip, it will list your account number. Absurd that there isn’t an easier way. Do a small amount, because my check was subjected to a 30-day hold because it was a new account.

    • Brandon says:

Your account number is also on the Welcome Letter and signature cards they send. I was pissed that I was going to have to wait a month, but the letter came just a few days later and I was able to get the info there.

      • Tom says:

My wife and I opened separate accounts on 4/8/16 and still haven’t received any welcome letters, so I guess they don’t always send them. Forgot to write her account number down when we opened the account and were waiting for her welcome letter to get the number but finally had to go into the branch and get it.

The employee also stated there is a 30 day grace period where there aren’t any monthly service charges assessed on the accounts, so you don’t have to worry about getting the $1500 min. balance in right away.

  24. Ryan says:

    Super easy and quick.

    Opened- 2/22 with $100 balance
Three small credit card payments- 2/24
Direct deposit (Capital One 360)- 2/28
    Bonus- deposited 2/28

I also confirmed no early termination, under any circumstances.

I plan to churn the hell out of this one for me and my wife, given how easy it was.

    • Lee says:

Please let us know how you go about churning! would you use a different address? have you cancelled already and can confirm the now early termination fee?

      Thanks in advance! 🙂

    • DUANE says:

So, you just transferred money from your Capital One 360 Account? How much did you transfer? I just recently opened a 53 account, but have my direct deposit tied up with BMO Harris to get their bonus.

    • TINK says:

Wow…and people complain about there being fees of any kind on accounts !
You are essentially opening and closing an account just for the bonus !
That’s like having a another kid….to get more food stamps !
      Lol !
      People amaze me !

  25. Pam says:

Does anyone know if the application allows a mailing address that is different than the physical address… My rental property is in their service area but my residence is not. I would like to apply using the rental property address and then use my residence for mail.

  26. Lee says:

    Worked like a charm
did 3 small transactions, two to CC and one for Cell phone (about $10 each) last week initial funding of $50
Last night i did a ACH from CapOne360 for $100 and this morning got the bonus even before the ACH hit!
Deff putting it in my calendar to churn

    • Tim says:

Did you simply cancel after getting the bonus? There isn’t anything in the fine-print about fees for early closing but just wondering on the chance that you or someone else reads this.

      • Lee says:

As I told Tom, I got the monthly fee waived for being a student so idc to cancel early.. I have about $60 just chillin till the 6mo the are up, don’t feel like risking it, I’ve heard there was no cancelation fee tho

  27. Tom says:

Ryan, Lee, from your transaction descriptions, you would be charged the monthly fee. Did that happen?

    • Lee says:

Tom, I’m a recent grad so I went to a branch and showed my still valid student ID(hasn’t expired) to get the fee waived

  28. Dave says:

Hi all, did anyone close account without any charge after receving bonus?
    Thanks in advance.

    • TINK says:

Wow…and people complain about there being fees of any kind on accounts !
You are essentially opening and closing an account just for the bonus !
That’s like having a another kid….to get more food stamps !
      Lol !
      People amaze me !

  29. Dave says:

Did anyone downgrade from Essential Account to Express Account after bonus posted? And then wait 90 days to close account?

    • Tom says:

I am thinking about doing this. Don’t want to leave $1500 in the account, but don’t want to close too soon. Downgrade to the no fee account seems like the best way.

  30. Tim says:

I received the $200 bonus a few weeks ago. I have $1500 sitting in the account to avoid fees. When closing this account, should I remove the $1500 first to take it to a zero balance? Will they charge me a monthly fee if there is a zero balance in the statement cycle?

    • Polly says:

CRAP! I didn’t see that coming. But… I can’t help but think it’s partly Ga#i1elle&b82r7;s fault. She didn’t take the other Upstarts and throw them in the limelight. If Sabrina got caught up in it and couldn’t handle it, it wasn’t all her fault.

  31. Eddy Cue says:

Was traveling in IL and stopped by a branch close to O’Hare airport to open an account with no issues (I live in MA and have a MA ID). I took along a printed copy of a utility bill

3/29 – account opened. funded with cash
4/6 – transferred 1500 to avoid fee from Capital One 360, coded as DD
    4/5 – 4/7 – Paid 3 bills with opening cash funds
    4/11 – Bonus posted

Might wait for statement to close before closing account

  32. Shawna says:

I signed up in January and made over three payments using the online bill payment in February and I still haven’t received my bonus. Any help with this?

    • Tom, says:

You don’t mention doing a direct deposit. It might have to be for $100 minimum (it has in the past though not mentioned this time), and if doing it by ACH it is only recognized as a DD from certain institutions mentioned above, and possibly some others.

  33. Sara says:

Can anyone confirm…do they only post bonuses on Mondays?

  34. Adam says:

    3/14 Opened account online
3/15 Went into branch to get my routing/account #
    3/15 Linked Cap360 account
3/17 Called into automated phone banking to get deposit amounts
    3/17 Transferred $1600 from Cap360 to 5/3 (to avoid < $1500 balance fee)
3/21 Did 3 small credit card bill pays
3/24 Bill pays posted to account
    3/29 $200 bonus posted
4/22 Transferred all money out to Cap360
4/26 Called and closed account over phone after verifying online $0 balance

  35. Paige says:

FYI- my daughter opened student account, was told by bank mgr she would qualify for the bonus. HOWEVER, we found out later that the bill pay feature is not available to her as she is not 18 yo. So she will not get the bonus after all.

  38. Randy says:

Opened account online yesterday, no area to put in my code for the $200 Bonus. When I called to get the code applied to my account they said it’s an in-branch only offer so I need to visit or call my local branch in order to get the code applied to my account.

So apparently this is not offered online anymore. Only in branch.

    • Eric says:

I called and asked the same thing, they told me that you don’t need the coupon code.

What did you hear from them in-branch?

  39. ann says:

It says on your offer it is available in MO.. but when I do a search on the 5/3 bank home page there aren’t any in MO??

    • Laura says:

I tried to apply for this bonus a few months back online. I went through the sign up and it wouldn’t’ let me complete the app. I called in and they told me I wasn’t eligible as a MO resident.

  40. Eric says:

I just opened the account online, and there was no place to enter the emailed coupon code. I called, and the csr said that I still qualified for the bonus without bringing the coupon in-branch (she also said to verify this info in-branch…). She said the bonus was for any new essential account that met the requirements, and did not necessarily have to use the coupon code.

I will update when I do/don’t get the bonus.

    • Eric says:

I did not get the bonus yet. Other dp’s suggest I should have received it.

I was charges with an $8 monthly account fee, because my account had $0 before it had $1500. Fee was only $8, not $11 because I had a qualifying direct deposit. I called up to get the fee waived, and csr was happy to do so. I assume that because my dd lowered my fee, that it counted as a DD. I used a transfer from my Chase total checking account.

If I had applied in branch, the offer would have attached to my account, but I applied online, and didn’t get the offer. I’ll wait another month and update, but I’m not getting this bonus.

Chase checking ach transfer triggers direct deposit
Cannot sign up online and get bonus( maybe on the phone?)
First monthly fee is easy to get waived

  41. ask says:

As there is no offer code option to enter in online application, Can anyone please confirm if opening account online gets bonus offer?

    • Adam says:

Yes, the first line of my reply above says that I opened an account online. I went into the branch the next day just to get my account info quicker. Otherwise you can wait for it to be mailed to you.

  42. J says:

Tried to apply today but could not open this account online, was told to go to branch.

  43. Chris says:

Having trouble getting this bonus to post.

I’ve made a bunch of bill pays now, well past three. Additionally, I’ve transferred $100+ in funds into the account from multiple sources, including Capitol One 360 (Coded CAPITAL ONE N.A. CAPITALONE), PayPal (Coded PAYPAL TRANSFER), and a transfer from a US Bank checking account (though that one coded WEB INITIATED PAYMENT AT FIFTH THIRD BANK P2P). Additionally, all three of those banks made trial deposits into the account, which I’ve seen others post DPs to indicate counted.

Account opened 7/5, all requirements met by 7/12.

At this point, I’m not sure what else to do – obviously I can’t call about this. Guessing my only recourse will be to actually switch my payroll DD to this account and THEN complain if it doesn’t post after a legit DD?

    • Eric says:

Did you open online or in branch?

      • Chris says:

In branch. Confirmed offer was attached. I said screw it this week and went through the HR hassle of changing my DD over – not walking away from 200 easy dollars. But perhaps my story can provide a DP; seems triggering the DD req can potentially be more challenging than expected.

  44. Sam says:

Opened account in branch : July 13
Santander transfer: July 27 (says payment)
3 web payments at $25 each: Aug 2
HSBC transfer: Aug 4 (says P2P)
    $200 bonus: Aug 8

  45. Vasv says:

    Received Bonus $200

    8/11/2016 – Opened account online
    08/23/2016 – CAPITAL ONE N.A. CAPITALONE XXXXXXXX – $1600
    8/25/2016 – Completed 3 bill pays

  46. Luke says:

Did the same requirements as Vasv and no dice on the bonus. Any idea how to proceed?

      • Josh says:

May be a DP but the Ally transfer has not counted toward the direct deposit. Currently working to link Paypal and give that one a shot.

        • Tom says:

I did ACH from Chase and Capital One 360 and got the bonus, so one of those worked.

        • Andrew says:

Did you have any luck with paypal? I transferred $100 on 12/29/16 via paypal and as of 1/5/17 still nothing. Prior to trying paypal I had previously tried bluebird and chase. Sigh.

          • Josh says:

My $10 PayPal hit 12/19. No bonus. I also went the dreaded route of a real DD from my employer. The first $10 DD hits tomorrow. Will follow up in a week.

Did you open in branch or online?

        • Andrew says:

I somehow missed your response until now. I opened online, and don’t have a branch nearby. Looks like I’m actually gonna have to change my DD to this account before it’s too late and hope that it will eventually come through. At this point I’ve also tried Ally and Schwab, with no success.

          • Josh says:

Only bad new to report here…. My DPs below:

            11/23/2016 $50.00 DEPOSIT
            11/29/2016 $10.00 5/3 ONLINE PYMT TO COMCAST
11/29/2016 $10.00 5/3 ONLINE PYMT TO CAPITAL ON
11/30/2016 $10.00 5/3 ONLINE PYMT TO CAPITAL ON
11/30/2016 $1,550.00 WEB INITIATED PAYMENT AT ALLY BANK P2P
            12/19/2016 $10.00 PAYPAL TRANSFER 5A4XXXXX
01/06/2017 $10.00 My Employer Corporate Payroll

So now i have met the requirements legitimately. No bonus to speak of. At first I thought it may have been due to opening in branch. My bank rep seemed determined to give me a corporate promo to avoid fees since I work for one for their preferred employers. I tried to say no thanks -i’m gonna meet your min ADB anyway. It was my thought that her additional code overrode the auto bonus but since your opened online it doesnt appear to be the case. I will give it one more week and then I must contact the bank rep. Not what I want but its due at this point….

        • Andrew says:

Dang. Didn’t even come through with legit direct deposit? This bonus has turned in to quite the ordeal for both of us it would seem. Have you contacted the bank yet? I’ve got 2 weeks before my workplace DD will be processed.

          • chris says:

I am in the same boat. Tried Chase, capital one back in December and both did not trigger. Workplace DD on Jan.14th. So far nothing yet.

          • Andrew says:

Mine finally showed up when the statement closed on 1/18/17. Unfortunately I was also charged the $11 monthly fee, apparently there is no grace period for this bank as I opened my account on 12/13/16. The day before the bonus posted I had finally gone through the hassle of changing over my DD at work, all for naught it would seem. No clue which of my efforts actually triggered the bonus.

          • JuicyJosh says:

Finally! Bonus received today. I am afraid all of my DPs are not valid because I believe my in person account rep set the account up incorrectly. Had no choice but to contact bank to investigate. After their week long review they posted bonus. Will cash and and close after next statement.

    • benzero says:

mine has been multiple weeks. they are telling me i have to wait until the account has been opened for 90 days before I will get the bonus. i don’t understand how everyone else is getting their so soon and i can’t get a rep to do anything for me in branch or on the phone.

  54. Michael says: have any other interesting bank accounts?

  55. RAB says:

How do you close this account? Can you call them and close it?

  56. Rab says:

This offer extended until march 31st.
Also, can i close the account once i get the bonus without incurring a penalty?

    • Michael says:

I closed with ACH pull from 3rd party bank. They shortly thereafter charged the $8 fee for monthly balance being low. I called up, they reversed the fee and closed account in same phone call. No penalty for closing early (I had my account open a little more than month after initial deposit credited). DP, bonus posted 1 week after 3rd billpay completed. Very easy bonus.

  57. Sam says:

Till what time you need to keep the account open after getting the bonus? Also, is there any fee for account closing?

  58. gina says:

So I opened one on 1/28/2016 when I first saw this offer. I closed it on 3/29/2016. Should I be okay applying the last day of this offer, March 31st. Also I think some of the information has changed with this offer such as it is available online.

  59. sloebrake says:

Possible DP that Chase ACH push does not work to trigger DD.

    12/29- Opened
    1/4- 3 Billpay
    1/6- “JPMorgan Chase Ext Trnsfr”
    10 business days pass
    1/20- “**** PAYROLL”

  60. Curmudgeon says:

    Promo extended to 3/31/17

  63. shari says:

Soft pull correct? I would assume so

  64. Ken says:

Do they require you to enter your state drivers license info or can you use a passport?

Does anyone have any clue as to why Western Pennsylvania is always excluded from these Fifth Third bank bonuses?

  66. J.M. says:

For those who are using PayPal to satisfy the DD requirements, can you advise what the exact steps are for completing the transaction. I’ve only used PayPal to pay for things on eBay – I never maintain a balance – the payment amount gets pulled from my funding checking account at BoA.

    • JuicyJosh says:

It’s a lil more tedious. You have to link PayPal to your involved bank accounts. You prob are already link to your personal account where the money is. Once your 5/3 is open, link that one to PayPal also. Using PayPal, withdraw fund from personal. Once balance posts after a few days, from Paypal, send to 5/3.

  67. Pingback: [Expired] Fifth Third $400 Business Checking Promotion, No Direct Deposit Required [IL, OH, MI, NC & FL] - DAD CC Cards

  68. Steve says:

If the bonus is supposed to post within a couple business days of completing the requirements, it does not appear that PayPal counts as a DD. It’s been a week since I transferred money with PayPal and no bonus. Chase push does not appear to work either, so a potential 2nd DP for that.

I’ll follow up once I get a payroll DD in, and see if that finally triggers the bonus.

  69. J.M. says:

Wow, that was the easiest bank bonus I’ve ever received.

I paid three bills using bill pay (to credit cards that I just happened to have $5-$6 balances on, each).

The original deposit I made using my primary bank (BoA) when I opened the account worked as my DD!!!

The deposit actually got hung up initially b/c BoA thought the debit card transaction/transfer might be fraudulent (I got a quick Y/N text from BoA that I answered Y). Just to be sure it would go thru, I set up the traditional transfer “link” between BoA and 5/3 where BoA made a couple of $0.xx trial deposits, and eventually the originally requested debit transactions went through (it had been in “processing” status for a few days).

    Opened account: Fri 2/3/17
    Began initial funding: Fri 2/3
BoA trial credits initiated: Mon 2/6
    Initial Funding received Tues 2/7
Initiated 3 Bill Pays: Tues 2/7
3 Bill Pays sent: Wed 2/8
    Bonus received: Fri 2/10

took less than one week (I opened the account last Friday afternoon)

    • J.M. says:

My initial deposit from BoA was $500 in case that DP matters.

      • Vito says:

Very interesting DP. So did you schedule an ACH transfer or just the verification process with two test amounts?
        Thank you for your post!

        • J.M. says:

When setting up the account during the opening process I entered by debit card information for the opening deposit. The deposit seemed to get held up, temporarily, by a fraud alert on the sending bank’s side (my primary bank). While I was waiting to see what would happen with that, I liked the two accounts, which triggered the two small ACH charges. Now, I can’t remember if I took steps to do this on both sides or just one. Either way, the original debit card transfer went through eventually, and counted as my DD I guess, since I’ve received my bonus.

          • John says:

Okay, to clarify, you made an initial deposit off of your BoA debit card at the time of account opening? Did you open the new account online, or in a branch? Thanks in advance.

  70. Nick says:

When I applied for the account, in the confirmation page, it has
Offer status: 515253 – Not Applied

    Anyone has the experience?

  71. Supechurn says:

    Opened 1/28/17 online. ACH’d $1000 from Ally on 2/6/17, DD’d another $500 on 2/12/17, bonus posted 2/14/17.

Amazingly quick turnaround. AND their website works very nicely.

  72. Ryan R says:

Any recent data points on closing the account after receiving the bonus? Do you need to withdraw your balance prior to calling to close the account? I’m concerned about getting hit with an account fee for having less than $1500 in the account.

    • Tim says:

From my experience, accounts cant be closed until all the money is withdrawn. Best to close account the same day balance goes to zero.

  73. krit says:

I just did 3 bill payments and verified serve trial deposits and got the 200 bonus

I just tried to open a Fifth Third account online today and was denied based on my chexsystems report. Received an adverse action notice by e-mail automatically with no specific reason given, but I will request a copy of the report. I have opened 3 checking accounts in the past 90 days to get bonuses, but I have no derogatory items on my chexsystems report to my knowledge, so not sure why else I would have been denied.

  75. Bob says:

Bonus posted day after statement closed
Used cap 360 to dd 100
    Also used paypal verification
Don’t know which one triggered it.

  76. Ryan R says:

For BP, is it fine to make 3 BPs to the same credit card on the same day? Or does it need to be 3 BPs to different cards/bills?

    • Bob says:

I did 3 bill payments per bonus instructions. I tried bp same credit card same day and it would not allow me.

      • Ryan R says:

Ok thanks. It wouldn’t allow me at first to do all 3 on the same day, but that’s because I was using the same payment amounts for all 3 of them. I changed it to different amounts but all going to the same card on the same day. Hope it works.

  77. Jeff says:

    Opened 1/31, deposited $100 from Discover checking 2/3, 3x $5 bill pays 2/6, received bonus 2/14

2/6/2017 JPMorgan Chase Ext Trnsfr ($50)
      2/21/2017 PAYPAL TRANSFER ($100)

Maybe my account had the previous requirement of $100 DD attached?

      • Steve says:

My bad. Didn’t mean to reply to you Jimbo.

      • Daniel says:

Hey Steve, so if I understand right.. You received the bonus even with paypal transfers coding as “PAYPAL TRANSFER” and not “WEB PAYMENT”? I’m in the same situation you were. I wonder if I should try Chase as well.

  80. C J says:

Bonus paid. I did ACH transfer from another bank (and no payroll DD) and paid 3 bills. Took about 3 weeks start to finish.

  81. Derek says:

Is anybody else having a hard time figuring out how to apply online? All I see on the direct offer link is a place to put an email to have a coupon mailed to you for in-bank use.

  82. Ryan says:

2/15 – Applied online; account was immediately opened

2/16 – $2000 opening deposit by ACH transfer from Ally Bank (I know it should only need to be $1500, but this was my first bank account bonus attempt so just wanted to be safe)

2/17 – Did another $100 ACH transfer from Ally Bank (again just to be safe)

2/17 – Did 3 BPs of different amounts ($10, $15, $20) to the same credit card

2/23 – $200 bonus deposited to my account “Congratulations! You’ve Earned Your Cash Bonus Thank You For Banking With Fifth Third”

Will leave $1500 in the account to meet the minimum balance requirement until the next statement cycle and then call to see if I can close without penalty (since there’s mention in the post about a possible 9 month period required before closing).

Good way to start off my bonus churning career! I have a feeling they all won’t be this easy…as I just experienced already with Westfield Bank…

    • Lily says:

Don’t know what i did wrong. Opened the account on 2/1 (also immediately). ACHed money from my local credit union on 2/7 and did 3 bp on 2/14; Transferred more money from Paypal on 2/17, but still no bonus. 🙁

      • Ryan says:

That’s unfortunate. My guess is the issue is your credit union did not count as a DD. Based on other DPs, it does seem that PayPal should count. Looks like you did the transfer right around the time I did my Ally transfer, so I would recommend waiting a couple more days to see if the bonus posts. Yours might just be delayed a little. Good luck!

        • Lily says:

Thanks for the response. The reason i used my local credit union because it doesn’t do trial deposits so i thought it would look less obvious (since real payroll doesn’t do trial deposits). Did your Ally transfer required trial deposits first?

          • Ryan says:

It looks like for this bank, Ally did not have to do trial deposits. I believe Ally was able to verify my Fifth Third Bank account by having my log in to it.

        • Lily says:

Ryan – Was your statement ending on 2/22 or 2/23? I just noticed my statement ending date was 2/2 (beginning statement date was 2/1, only 1 day, which is really weird). I wonder if the bonus posting is tied to the statement closing date?

      • Steve says:

        How much were your transfers?

        • Lily says:

$800 from credit union, $110 from Paypal. The credit union ach description was “web initialed payment Bank Name A2A transfer Lname Fname.” What about Ally bank’s transfer description? Thanks!

    • Tim says:

You should be able to close this account anytime fee free. The fee disclosure agreement has no mention of a closure fee for personal accounts. It does disclose a $50 closure fee for business accounts however.

      • Ryan says:

Thanks. Is there any risk to getting hit with an account maintenance fee (for not meeting the minimum balance requirements) by withdrawing all funds from the account and then calling to close? Could they charge an account maintenance fee since my balance would be below $1500 between the time I withdrew funds and closed the account? Which would then also trigger an overdraft fee.

  83. Elias says:

    Two DPs here:

Pay 3 bills $5 each – Chase external transfer – received bonus 15 days later.

Pay 3 bills $5 each – paypal external tranfer – received bonus 3 days later.

We received the bonus the same day so I dont think it matters which one you use but instead they give the bonus the same day each month.

This confirms that chase ach and paypal still works

  84. chasejuggler says:

Got the bonus. $102 ACH from CapitalOne360 for the DD, and I paid my girlfriend $5x.xx three times to trigger it.

Bonus posted almost immediately after hitting the requirements. This is my third bonus with them, super easy to churn.

Hopefully if I get the balance down to $0 I can close this thing online…

  85. MarcoPolo says:

I am not seeing any DP about account closure?
How did people close their accounts ?

  86. Jake says:

Still waiting on a bonus.. This is my timeline:

    Feb 15: Opened Account
    Feb 16: Paypal verification Deposits
    Feb 21: Paypal Deposit $100
Feb 22: 3 Bill pays of different amounts to Chase CC
Feb 23: 4th bill pay for leftover balance
    Feb 24: PNC verification deposits
    Mar 1: Paypal Transfer $3
Mar 1: ALLY WEB PAYMENT P2P $25 (transfer from ally)

When I first opened the account there was an error when I went to set up my opening deposit. It never went through. I called the next morning and the rep said everything was fine and my account was all set up. But the initial deposit never came. In the fine print it says “$50 minimum deposit required to open all checking accounts and obtain bonus.” So I think that may be why I have not received anything yet. How much longer should I wait before I call it a loss? Any thoughts?

  87. Lily says:

Just to report back that the bonus finally posted yesterday. The bonus posting is definitely tied to the statement date. My statement ends on 3rd, so bonus posted on the 6th. How they sign the statement date is a weird mystery to me, because i opened the account on Feb 1 and obviously i couldn’t finish the requirement by the 3rd, hence i had to wait till this now to receive my bonus. It sure made me very nervous as i saw so many people that opened accounts later than i but received bonus much early. I used both my local credit union and PayPal transfer. Either of them alone would work i’m pretty sure of it. Thank Ryan and Steve for your information and kind advice, I really appreciate it. And of course thank OP for posting the deal!!

  88. Deepak says:

I have not received the bonus yet. Here are my transactions.

2/14/17 – Account opened (Essential Checking)
2/15/17 – Amex Serve verification deposits
2/21/17 – $100 Deposit from Serve (Serve Enterprise Exchange xxxxx) (using this as my DD component)
$Web initiated p2p deposit from Chase (backup for Serve as alternate DD)
2/22/17 – Bill payment to Comcast
2/23/17 – Bill payment to DTE
3/02/17 – Bill payment to Discover credit card

Is this just a delay or is my Amex Serve deposit not being counted as DD?

    Thanks in advance

    • Bob says:

I guess you need wait for the statement day.

      • Deepak says:

Thanks. I just logged back in and noticed that I now have a statement date added to the account details (didn’t have this yesterday). My statement date is 03/07 so I’m going to wait three to four days and hope that the bonus posts like it did for the others. I started the account linking process for PayPal in the mean time since the difference between me and most others that already got the bonus seemed to be the source of DD (Amex Serve vs PayPal). However, now that I have a statement date I’m going to wait a few days before moving money from PayPal so that I can confirm if Serve does indeed work.

        • Luke says:

It has only been 4 business days since you completed the third bill payment. Patience grasshopper

          • Deepak says:

haha. i totally forgot about that until you pointed it out. I was so focused on the DD portion that I was instinctively counting my days from when that happened.

i will report back here in a few days

        • Miya says:

How did you find your statement date? Is it under “More Details” in the Account Summary?

          • Deepak says:

Yes, but it doesn’t seem to appear until AFTER the statement date so if you don’t see anything yet, it’s cos your statement date hasn’t passed yet. It will appear under the “Account Profile” title under “More Details”.

    • Deepak says:

I’m happy to report that my bonus (first BTW) was posted just now, provided my data points above. Now the question is,”when can I close the account”. I didn’t transfer $1500+ and don’t yet see a maintenance fee on my account so really confused about what will happen if I withdrew all the money and called them to cancel. I am wondering now if I should wait until the end of my second statement period, pay any dues there might be and then cancel to avoid any trouble with them.

Nonetheless, this was a really easy bonus. Great start to my churning journey.

      • Alan says:

Congrats! But still not clear if chase works for 5/3 dd. Anyone has updated data point?

      • Chris says:

Just an FYI, the random paper they mailed me a week after I got my card, had language stating the account had to be opened 180 days or risk a $50 closing fee, AND it mentioned having to make 6 non PIN debit transactions…

  89. Neil says:

Just a DP, got bonus after the statement day.

  90. Marcus says:

Did 3 bill pays on 2/23

Sent $195 from Serve on 3/1

    Nothing yet.

  91. Simon says:

apparently I live too far from their branch. Too bad they closed all their branches in the Pittsburgh area. I tried using an Ohio zip code at the initial page, however still couldn’t go through the next page when I entered my actual address… Good luck to those living near a branch!

  92. Chris says:

    Interesting DP:
Opened on March 13, wasnt sure which Transfers would count towards DD so I did Huntington and Chase. Both did a trial deposit, then $770
3/13 Chase showed Ext Trnsfr, Huntington was Web Initiated Payment At Huntington_Onln P2p went through on 3/20
Paid 2 Chase Bills on 3/14, as well as a CitiCard bill. The CitiCard bill showed up as a ‘scan of a paper check’ and took longer to go through… Cleared March 20

Not a big deal, except – Thankfully the Bonus Posted on March 15th!

So either Huntington or Chase triggered the DD, the Bill Pays ‘count’ as soon as you SCHEDULE them, and apparently there’s no need to make 6 debit transactions like the mailing I got said. Debating on ‘Doubling Down’ and doing this for the wife even though it said one per household….Might just use my work address. Will Report if i go that route.

    • Jeff says:

Chris, what did you do for an opening deposit? Did you do one? When I signed up, there wasn’t really an option, so my initial funding was $100 through an ACH from Capital One 360 about 5 days after opening (after the small verification deposits). I made my 3 bill pays, but I think it’s still waiting for one more DD before I get my bonus? I don’t know…kind of confused at this point. Have another CapOne deposit scheduled to see if it triggers it.

  93. A says:

    2/26 – account opened
3/2 – initial deposit setup at time of application
    3/2 – PayPal verification deposits
    3/6 – PayPal deposit ($100)
3/7 – three bill pay to credit card ($5 each)
    3/9 – Capitalone360 deposit ($100)
    3/15 – statement date
    3/22 – Chase verification deposits
    3/23 – bonus posted

I am not sure what counted as the DD to trigger the bonus. My suspicion is that it was the Chase verification deposits, suggesting that PayPal and capitalone360 did not satisfy the DD requirement for me. But hard to know for sure.

  94. travelmom says:

Both myself and my husband received this one. Applied same day. DP’s below apply to both accounts.

3/18 – opened. Used bank debit card for initial $50. Note that I did not use the same debit card for both of us. Started trial deposits from our main bank.
3/21 – trial deposits hit account, initiated $250 transfer from main bank account. $50 initial deposit also hit account.
3/23 – 3 small bill pays under $1.50 each posted to account. $250 bank transfer also posted.
    3/24 – $200 bonus posted!

Now on to close the accounts. One of the easiest bank accounts to open and get bonus, less than 1 week from application to receiving bonus. Highly recommend if you are in the targeted area.

  95. Eduardo Baez says:

I opened Fifth Third Bank Essential Checking account on 03/21/17. Application process was very simple and straightforward without random identity verification questions. I was able to set up Online Banking and Bill Pay right after account was instantly approved the same day.
As part of the application process, I selected Leader Bank debit card as the initial fund source but got e-mail one hour after account was opened stating Fifth Third Bank was unable to fund the account using that method. Therefore, on 03/21/17, I sent $1,600 via Everbank People Pay to fund the account. Since several data points confirmed some trial verification deposits have triggered direct deposit requirement, I initiated trial verification deposits from Everbank, Wells Fargo and Goldman Sachs Bank. I was also able to verify new Fifth Third Bank checking account instantly from TIAA Direct, Chase and Leader Bank.
On 03/22/17, $1,600 initial fund posted as Web Initiated Payment At Everbank Pp People Pay. Also, the two small trial verification deposits from Everbank and Wells Fargo were received. Trial verification deposits posted as Everbank Test Tran and Wells Fargo Trial Dep. Having funds already, I scheduled three $5 online bill payments for three different credit cards.
On 03/23/17, the two small trial verification deposits from Goldman Sachs Bank and the three $5 online bill payments posted. Goldman Sachs trial verification deposits posted as Goldman Sachs Ba Payment. Also, $100 transfers from Chase and TIAA Direct were received. Chase transfer posted as JPMorgan Chase Ext Trnsfr while TIAA Direct posted as Tiaa-Cref Trust Payment.
On 03/24/17, $100 transfers from Wells Fargo and Leader Bank posted. Wells Fargo transfer posted as Wells Fargo DDA to DDA while Leader Bank posted as Web Initiated Payment At Leader Bank Na P2p.
While looking at the account today, I noticed statement was generated on 03/23/17 and $200 bonus was posted on 03/24/17 as Congratulations! You’ve Earned Your Cash Bonus Thank You For Banking With Fifth Third.
This is the fastest and easiest bonus I ever got!

  96. Josh says:

I received a cryptic phone call today from a Fifth Third bank about a hour and a half from my home. Didn’t really want to talk so I just said that the person wasn’t available. Anyone received anything similar?

In the middle of this one-current timeline:

3/22/17 – opened account with $50 from my credit union
3/23/17 – $500 transfer from Huntingdon Bank (doesn’t appear to have coded as a DD)
    3/27/17 – cryptic call …

    • JohnFromATL says:

It is not unusual in my experience to get a call after you open an account. It is usually just a “welcome aboard, how can we help get you into more of our services” kinda call.

    • Eduardo Baez says:

As JohnFromATL said, it is a welcome aboard call. I got a similar call the same day you got yours. However, I did talk to the bank officer. She sent me an e-mail with her info in case I need any help. So, don’t worry. You are safe.

  97. Gina says:

Anyone get their account closed successfully? Any fees or clawback? I did this last year and closed my account on 3/29/16 so I’ll be cutting it close!

  98. Jesse says:

5/3rd Bank no longer operates in Missouri, and MO residents are not eligible to open accounts/receive the bonus.

  99. Frito Pendejo says:

Damn, looks like it expired at the start of today instead of the end.

  100. Ozzie says:

Cap One transfer on 3/27,“Capital One N.a. Capitalone XXXXXXXXXXX” must have counted as DD. Completed 3 bill pays as of 3/31. Bonus posted on 04/03.

  101. DT says:

Here’s my experience. I wasn’t sure what would trigger the DD requirement, so I tried a few.

March 30 – Account opened, funded by debit card for $1000 (max allowed)
March 31 – Wells Fargo trial deposit
April 3 – Chase external transfer (initially verified by login)
April 3 – Debit card funding posted
    April 4 – 3 bill pays processed
April 4 – Wells Fargo DDA to DDA
April 4 – Call from banker asking if I had any questions
April 5 – Chase trial deposits (re-added the account using manual verification)
    April 5 – $200 Bonus posted

    • Jeff says:

So from your timeline, it took several days for the debit card deposit to show up? I just opened my this morning and the debit card deposit isn’t showing yet.

  102. Grant says:

    Here are my data points:

    3/19 – account opened
    3/22 – $50 ACH posted (opening deposit)
3/27 – $100 DD posted (Chase business checking account direct deposit)
    4/3 – 3 x $10 bill payments sent
4/3 – $200 bonus posted (Congratulations! You’ve Earned Your Cash Bonus Thank You For Banking With Fifth Third)

    • Surprised more people don’t use the Chase business checking to transfer. Thanks for the DP. Did you open online Grant and use CA address?

      • Grant says:

I opened in branch a few months ago for the $500 biz checking bonus. After bonus posted, I downgraded to the basic Chase business checking account. To use the DD feature, there is a $25/month fee, but it is super simple and you can do a DD to an account in 2-3 days.

  103. Alan says:

It seems Chase external transfer worked for me.

    3/7 JPMorgan Chase Auth Crdt
    3/7 three online billpayment
    3/9 JPMorgan Chase Ext Trnsfr
    3/15 statement
    4/5 200 bonus

  104. Jimbo says:

I closed my account via SM after receiving the bonus. No fee mentioned.

  105. Frito Pendejo says:

I don’t think this is available in PA anymore. There are no PA branches at all and the nearest ones in West Virginia are 200+ miles from the PA border. The Fifth Third bank won’t let you submit an app without a zip and it appears to reject PA zips.

  106. Rob says:

3/21- Opened with $250 from Debit Card Online
3/29- PayPal to trigger DD ($1600)
    4/8- Bill pay (Electrical/Utility)
    4/8- Bill pay (Cable/Utility)
4/8- Bill pay (Citi Credit Card)

  107. Gina says:

Interesting datapoint. I wonder if the extended/new offer has changed. I will try to do a direct deposit from capital one and see if it triggers it.
    Opened 3-31-2017 under old offer
Bill pay posted 4/5 Payments of $15,$15,$10
    Paypal Verify posted 4-3
    Bonus posted 4-6

Opened 4/11 under new extended offer
Bill pay posted 4/14 Payments of $15,$15,$5
    Paypal Verify posted 4-12
    No bonus as of 4-17

  108. Sean says:

Had a slightly different offer targeted to address that only required a direct deposit of $100 for a $200 bonus, but required opening account in branch.

    4/7-Open Account
    4/17-USAA: ACH Push
    4/18-Bonus Deposited

  109. Josh says:

Datapoints – can tell you what did, and did not, work to trigger DD requirements:

    3/20 – Account Opened;
    3/23/17 – ACH push from Huntingdon Bank (did NOT code as DD);
    4/7/17 – ACH push from PNC (did NOT code as DD);
    4/11/17 – bill pay;
    4/13/17 – bill pay;
    4/13/17 – Transfer from Paypal (DID code as DD);
    4/19/17 – bill pay;

    4/20/17 – Bonus posted

  110. Bri says:

4/17 – Open Account – Below is what my Account Activity Page looks like. Don’t know what counted as a DD.

    4/18 – $100.00 Web Initiated Payment At Dollar P2p 041817

    4/19 – Web Initiated Payment At Dollar P2p Pymt 041917 $1,300.00
    4/19 – 5/3 Online Pymt $20.00
    5/3 Online Pymt $20.00
    5/3 Online Pymt $20.00

4/20 – Congratulations! You’ve Earned Your Cash Bonus Thank You For Banking With Fifth Third

  111. Tom says:

    4/12 Opened Account

4/17 “Web Initiated Payment At Fifth Third Bank P2P – $330” (was an ACH push from BMO Harris)
4/20 Paypal Transfer – $100 (This one probably counted as the DD)

4/24 Three Bill Pays to American Express Credit Card $108, $109, $110
(Messed up the bill pay setup – they mailed the paper checks to my home address – my fault – but the money hasn’t been withdrawed and should’nt be since the checks won’t be cashed)

4/25 Congratulations! You’ve Earned Your Cash Bonus Thank You For Banking With Fifth Third

  112. gina says:

Still no bonus for me. Opened 4/11. Did paypal trial deposit, nothing. Paypal transfer of over $100, nothing. Capital one trial deposit, nothing. Three bill pays all around 4-16 too. I just did three more bill pays today and transfering $105 from Capital one. Hope it posts with this. I might try the BMO transfer next.

    • 10g says:

Did you and your husband account have the same address. Me and my wife sign up same day 3/30 in branch with the same address and so far only my wife got the bonus within 1 week. We did same DD and 3 billpay. I’m still waiting. So maybe there is a limit to 1 bonus per household, the banker did mention the household thing, even though the term did not mention it. I’ll wait til after my statement close and see if I get bonus. If not I’ll just close account.

      • Gina says:

Yes, same address. That might be it. Although we did the same offer Jan 2016 and we both got the bonus. Maybe they changed it 🙁

      • Gina says:

My bonus posts today finally! Not sure which but I did a $103 capital one transfer since paypal $103 didn’t work. So that triggered it OR since my three bill pay were broken between statement periods I did 3 extra on the same day. I’m thinking the capital one triggered it. But anyways they still gave the bonus so they didn’t enforce any household rule.

  113. Brian says:

    4/10 – Opened; student account
    4/20 – PayPal transfer $100
4/25 – Scheduled bill pay posted; 3x $10. All to credit cards
    4/27 – Bonus posted

    • minke says:

hi i just wonder the part of three online bills. can i use it to pay for other bank’s credit card? how can i do it?

and PayPal transfer $100 is from your own PayPal account to your 53 account directly ?

  114. Ray says:

opened 04/13 and did payroll dd and 3 bill pay last week, still no bonus. weird.

  115. VJ says:

    I was rejected since I am a non-resident alien. 🙁

  116. Tom says:

I asked by SM to downgrade to Express Checking they said its not possible
So I withdrew all funds and Sent a SM to close the account.

DP – Can close by Secure Message.

  117. Charles S. says:

    04/13 – Opened Account
04/20 – Transferred $1600 from CapOne 360 “Capital One N.a. Capitalone XXXXXXXXXXX” for DD
    04/23, 24 & 25 – Online payment to CC for $25 each to hit 3X payment req.
    05/04 – $200 bonus posted!

Thank you for this web site!

  118. EnvyV07 says:

    – Account opened on 4/21/2017 1:00AM
+ Funded with $1,000 from ACH Bank of America (BOA)
+ Funded with $600 from BOA ACH
+ Set up Direct Deposit of $100 (from work place via online)
    – Pay 3 bills via online pay after funds available
    – $10 to Chase CC on 4/28/17
    + Funds available on 4/26/2017 ($1,600)
    – $10 to Chase CC on 5/2/17
    – $11 to Chase CC on 5/4/17
    + $200 Rewarded on 5/5/17

Very easy. This was my first too. Also, you can setup all 3 “online payments” via their site but just choose different dates and submit $10’s to the same credit card. You don’t have to pay to 3 different account.

  119. Jf says:

Should I link my 5/3 to paypal instantly or manually enter in info? For DD

    • jf says:

Only took 4 or 5 days, funded with $200 from WF debit on the 10th, did 3 bill pays, and it looks like the paypal trial deposits are what triggered the bonus, which posted yesterday, and my paypal transfer of $106 is still pending as of today! Hoping to get the trio targeted bonus, which would be akin to wells fargo checking bonus with the propel world, and give both of these banks some love and not preemptively close the accounts!!!

  120. Dan says:

Just received my bonus. PayPal DD worked.

Seems you have to do 3 bill pays, each on different days but can be same place.

Am I seeing this right? No early termination fees???

    • minke says:

hi, I just wonder how to set up PayPal DD. I link the 53 checking with my paypal and transfer $200 from paypal to my account. can it be accounted for paypal DD?

and for also 3 bill pays, i choose to redeem amazon gift card. does it work?

  121. Eileen says:

For Billpays, can I just issue myself checks to my home address? Has anyone tried this? or does it need to be to a 3rd party vendor? Thx.

    • Saturn says:

Do you have a credit card that you pay off? Other people here report that worked for them. Note that you don’t have to wait for a credit card statement to close or pay a specific amount. Just initiate any transfer from the card online, 3 times.

  122. yb says:

5/15 Account Opened funded with $100
5/15 Bill pay to 3 CCs of $25/ea
5/16 Account is negative $86, I call, threaten with lawsuit they admit wrongdoing and reverse overdraft following morning (the overdraft were pending so they had to wait for it to post before reversal).
5/18 $150 DD from Discover goes pending
5/18 $200 Bonus appears as pending
5/19 everything posts and account is in good standing at $375.

    Moral: available =/= available

  123. Jake N says:

FYI, looks like you can only fund max $1,500 with a bank account and $1,000 max with a *debit* card.

  124. crowderd says:

Still no bonus for me, Deposited $100 on 3/8. Paypal xfer of $1500 after verify. Did 3 online bill pymts by 3/28. After bonus did not appear I xferred another $100 from Paypal to hopefully trigger the bonus. Not so. Now I’m setting up DD from employer to hopefully trigger the bonus but it may be past the 90 day window.

I too live outside the 50 mile radiuss but hopefully that’s not the issue.

  125. B Laddy says:

    5/30/17: Congratulations! Bonus – $200

  126. Jake N says:

    Bonus posted

    5/25 – Open
5/31 – $1,500 initial funding from BofA posted. Additionally, I didn’t see that the initial funding was in progress, so I had started a second $1,500 transfer upon opening, which also posted this day.
6/2 – $5 bill pay to Chase Reserve
6/5 – $5 bill pay to Chase Reserve
6/6 – $5 bill pay to Chase Reserve
    6/7 – Bonus posted

I had setup my employer DD for this, but apparently BofA transfer, which was initiated *from* Fifth Third worked.

@Will / Chuck – potentially a DP for what counts as DD here.

  127. jf says:

For some reason they are charging me $8 for a monthly service charge. Yet I have over $1500 in the account, as an attempt to get the trio bonus…

  129. Eileen says:

Has anyone encountered the following message? Just tried to apply right now. I will call tomorrow, but would like to be prepared if possible. I wonder if it’s because I live in Wilmington NC, ~120 miles from nearest branch in Raleigh?

Your Application Can’t Be Completed Online
We’re sorry for the inconvenience, but at this time we are not able to process your application online. Please choose from one of the following ways to contact us, so that we can help you to understand your options.
    [Phone] [Branch]

    • Kyle says:

Well, I just got the same result and I live about 5 minutes from a branch.

Did you call? That’s what I’m probably going to do given I’m lazy.

      • Eileen says:

I did just call – turns out there’s an issue with Transunion…which should have already been fixed long ago. Transunion added my soon to be ex-husband’s new address to my file, so it doesn’t match up. I asked Transunion to fix this months ago, but if my suspicion is correct, they still haven’t fixed. I am waiting for a call-back from a 5th 3rd supervisor for more details/confirmation re: the exact issue.

        • Eileen says:

Apparently it was just a glitch with their system…they re-did the application via phone and it went through no problem. Very odd.

  130. parkdanil says:

    DP: Avoiding Fee’s

Shortly after opening the account a local bank rep (NC) contacted me and mentioned that as long as the account was receiving DD from a local business the account would remain fee free. I cannot confirm this though since I had already initiated a Bank transfer for $1,600.

Also I entered the wrong address for 2 of my payments and ended up getting the checks at my home address, but I still received credit as far as I can tell.

    5/12 Account Opened

  131. Yet Another Redditor says:

Any reason this is not on the best bonus accounts list? This is a quick, easy bonus to do.

    • B Laddy says:

It is…it’s just buried down in the “State Specific” ones at 4.17 due to the regional availability. That said though, I agree this was one of the easiest ones I’ve done.

  132. Andrea says:

I sent a sm to close the account on 6/23. They responded that I had to close in branch. I was able to close easily in branch. When I was asked why I was closing the account I said the minimum deposit was too high to keep it fee free.

  133. Matthew says:

I am trying to do this online. I had a 53 account which was closed more than 1 year ago.

When I try to open online and enter the zip code and select the option as new checking customer.
We do not currently offer accounts in your area.

Any idea if anyone else got this and how to overcome this error.

my login to my old 53 account is still valid which was closed a year ago. Can I select as existing checking and proceed but I fear I will not be eligible for promotion if I select as existing checking customer.

    • Jesse says:

Did you figure out any resolution to this? I live around the corner from a branch, and there are three others in my city (Atlanta, GA), but it says the same error “We do not currently offer accounts in your area.”.

$200.00 Cash Bonus Tax Withheld -$56.00

Has anyone else had Tax withheld? Is this normal, I wanted to find out before closing the account. Thanks

    • SG says:

I think I figured it out. When I applied online it gave a message to call and open the account. By doing the account opening on the phone they must send you a signature card to sign, otherwise they will withold 28% for taxes (thus $56). I recieved the signature card in the mail today and faxed it in so I will update if they do reimburse the $56.
So DP Paypal worked for DD

If you sign up by phone you may want to wait to recieve the signature card before proceding.

          • JavaDfalt says:

            oops, $144..

          • Gadget says:

Just FYI, you must have told the bank you are subject to backup withholding. That is not normal. That means the bank has to pull taxes before paying you interest. “Normal” would mean collecting the $200, then paying taxes at the end of the year.

Difference is now you will need to report the income from the bonus, but also make sure you take credit for the taxes they already pulled. I am not an accountant, so I can’t begin to tell you exactly how that is done. If your income is low, like you said, you will likely get your 53, 56, whatever, bucks back. Basically, by doing backup withholding, you made your tax situation more difficult by subjecting yourself to paying taxes sooner rather than later.

Not being critical – just trying to help. Because if you don’t reflect it properly on your taxes, you won’t see the money back.

  139. Brian says:

DP: Just did this for my wife, Cap One push. I think the trial deposits triggered the bonus because the ACH transfer hasn’t completed yet, so I don’t think there is a minimum on the DD.

You are more patient than me. I just realized I am a couple days overdue for both mine and SO’s accounts. From looking at the account online, I noticed it said on my account transactions on 7/7/2017 a comment *** LAST STATEMENT BALANCE ***, but looking at my online statements, I have none available. SO’s account is the same way, but different day of the month, even though we opened the accounts on the same day (maybe statement date gets cued off last digit of SSN, or Birthday?).

I sent an SM tonight to investigate my online statements only, and asked when I should see my first statement. I am hoping that once the statement jam is cleared it will rain cash money. They recently upgraded their online banking, and I am hoping that is the problem.

I believe that the banker applied my promotion in branch because their system did a print out of the promo requirements, which I kept of course. If statement generation doesn’t fix the issue, then I will start having to ask questions about the promo, and if it’s attached to the account. It appears most people on here are getting the bonus no problem, so without saying that I directly, I will want to know what’s wrong with my account. Most people here probably opened online, but I opened in branch.

Same thing with the statements happened to me. I sent a SM to confirm the bonus is attached to my account, which it is. They state that it can take up to 6-8 weeks, which contradicts what the T&C are. So frustrating =(

Doc, Fine print section need to be updated: Dates, & “Bonus will be deposited into your new checking account within 10 business days of completing requirements.” I am nearing my 10 business day mark and tapping my foot.

  145. J says:

Link no longer works. Am I missing something?

  146. Aidan says:

Holy… Cannot open online. Visit the store today, but seems it was expired.

Anyone has the email coupon with promotion code I can try?

    • Gadget says:

You might be able to find out the promo code that used to be linked there and manually type it in on the online application. Maybe on another site, or a cached link? It would be a reasonable assumption that would work, but no guarantee.

Your other option would be to call them and see if they have the promo code to use. Call Monday and ask for marketing. The promo was supposed to be active til 7/31. (Note to self – never wait until the last day to sign up.)

  147. Gadget says:

For those who have exceeded the 10 business day mark and did not get the bonus payout, try paying out at least a total of $100 via bill pay. My bonus paid out on 7/28, the day after a few more outgoing bill payments posted online, but my SO’s account did not payout and she hasn’t paid any more bills. Fixing that now.

Per the bank bonus thread on Reddit, the old Fifth Third promo’s used to specifically say $100 total in bill pays, and I’m guessing the system is still coded to look for that minimum amount.

  148. Nick B says:

Adding to the DPs here, I did three bill pays of $25 each to separate chase credit cards all on the same day and they are telling me I have not met the requirement. So either it has to be over $100 as others are saying or don’t do it on the same day to the same recipient as I did. I’ll do a few more and get it over $100 and see what happens.

  149. Jay says:

Wells Fargo worked for me in FL.
Opened in branch. About a 20 minute process.
Did about $110 total bill pays, 3 ccs, and the bonus posted in the next day or two.

  150. Klad says:

Bonus is back expires 09/30 but now need $1000+ DD within 45 days. I do not see any Bill Payments though.

  151. Klad says:

    Opened 07/28 with $125.
    08/01 – $119 PayPal Transfer
08/02 – 3 Bill Payments totaling $100+ to Chase, Discover and BOA
08/03 – Congratulations! You’ve Earned Your Cash Bonus Thank You For Banking With Fifth Third

  152. Mark says:

    Opened 7/11 with $50
    7/17 – $1550 Discover Bank transfer
    7/19 – 3 $33 bill payments
    8/1 – $101 Paypal transfer
    8/2 – $101 TD Ameritrade transfer
    8/10 – $10 bill pay
    8/21 – $500 TD Ameritrade transfer
    8/22 – $550 bill pay

    No bonus….

  153. Hong says:

How can I know the transfer is recognized as direct deposit?

I tried twice from chase bank and paypal.
but there are no evidence the direct deposit is recognized.
    Please see my bank account’s received list;
    8/25 Paypal Transfer 5frxxxxxxxx +$1000.00
    8/18 JPMorgan Chase Ext Trnsfr 6447777xxx +$1000.00

    • Hong says:

      In addition, here’s the requirements;
“To obtain the $200 bonus, direct deposit(s) totaling $500 or more must be received within 45 days of account opening AND maintain a $500 average balance for 60 days. Bonus will be deposited into your new checking account within 10 business days of completing requirements.”

Should I go to bank office and ask them whether I satisfied the direct deposit requirement?

      • Gadget says:

Usually not a good idea, if you are trying to “cheat” the system, to ask questions. Some banks care – some don’t. Just be patient. If you had a real DD, then ask as many questions as you want. If you cheat, ask, and get the wrong banker/CSR, they can be jerks, flag your account… unlikely, but it does happen.

    • Gadget says:

There is no rock solid way to know. Some ppl will say if it says P2P that it didn’t count, but that isn’t always the case. It all depends on how the back-end system recognizes the transaction, which also processes the bonus payment. Use a recommended DD method, then wait. Or, use a really DD method, then raise hell when it doesn’t work. Banks do update their systems, and you will never know if someone QA’s your bonus payout, so unless you use a real DD there is always a chance it will fail.
