The Fine Print

  • Valid for customers who open a new primary checking account, not valid for current customers who have a primary or joint checking account. Also not valid for previous customers that have closed their account within past five years
  • Bonus requirements must be completed within 90 days of account opening
  • Bonus will post within 30 days after the completion of the program
  • Qualifying direct deposits are defined as: recurring Direct Deposit of a paycheck, pension, Social Security or other regular monthly income electronically deposited by an employer or an outside agency into your Sun East checkin
  • Account must remain open to receive bonus
  • All bank account bonuses are treated as income/interest and as such you have to pay taxes on them

Avoiding Fees

There are no monthly fees on this account and as far as I am aware there is no early account termination fee, but you must keep your account open until the bonus posts. You will need to deposit $5 into the Share Savings account when you become a member as well (this can be withdrawn when the accounts are closed)

To become a member of this credit union, you have a few free options and one paid option. We’ll discuss the paid option first because it’ll be applicable to the majority of people. Anybody can simply make a $10 donation to the Sun East Charitable Foundation to become a member.

In addition if you live, attend school, volunteer, work or worship in any of the following locations you can join for free:

  • Nottingham, Pennsylvania
  • Oxford, Pennsylvania
  • Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
  • Newark, Delaware
  • Wilmington, Delaware

If an immediate family member is a member, you can also join for free. There are also 4,000 affiliate businesses, groups within DE, PA & NJ  and if you’re part of one of them you can also join for free.

Our Verdict

The biggest problem with this bonus is that we’re unsure if it’s a hard or soft pull, I don’t live within the service area otherwise I would just go into a branch to find out. Thankfully other writers for DAD CC Cards do live within the service (and both are getting addicted to bank bonuses, just like me) so I’m sure they’ll find out this important information in due time.

I think almost any ACH deposit will trigger the direct deposit requirement despite what the fine print says, but we won’t know for sure until after the promotion has ended. Obviously it’s best if you can easily change your employer payroll, but this isn’t possible for everybody.

If you have any experience with this bonus, please share with us in the comments below.

Any website where I can find promo codes for airlines before booking flights. I guess there probably aren’t any publicly available or they would have been all over the internet (and hence shutdown) but asking anyway.

  2. Bill says:

When I opened up in the downtown Philadelphia branch, it was SP because I didn’t receive any alerts. In addition to the credit report, they use CheckFree. I received calls for a preapproved personal loan after opening the account.

    • Prasanna R says:

Do you know what triggers the direct deposit? Does it have to be a ACH transaction from an employer? Thanks in advance.

  3. Eric says:

William, what makes you think it might be a hard pull? Aren’t checking accounts usually soft pulls? I’m also interested to know which ACH transfers trigger the bonus.

  4. dean says:

Just opened both accounts. Can they be closed right after the bonus posts?

  5. Jon says:

SE did not recognize my employer or my location, despite living less than 2 miles from a branch. They allowed me to set up a charitable donation account and donate a minimum of $10 to establish a membership. Asked about hard vs soft and the in-branch rep explained to me they would perform a soft pull.

  6. Jonathan says:

Thought I would update this with my results. Opened the account on June 16th and funded the max amount of $550 using my barclay arrival+ card. It took until June 22nd for the account to fully open and be able to log in. The funding went through as a purchase on my barclay arrival+ card. I am planing on doing a serve ach transfer to hit the $5000 dd requirement. I will update when I get the bonus.

    • Eric says:

Coincidentally I just found out last night from the Serve terms that you are limited to $2500 of withdrawals to your bank account per month. You won’t be able to do the $5K DD. What will you use instead?

      • Prasanna R says:

Does the DD has to be $5000 in the same time or is it during a billing period?

      • Jonathan says:

I wasn’t sure if that was $5000 at one time or total so I am doing both. I did a $5000 ach transfer from chase and am doing 2 $2500 serve withdrawls. That being said I am pretty sure it is $5000 total. Very few people make $200,000+ per year.

  7. Jonathan says:

Another piece of information. I just got charged $11 for some (incredibly ugly and unprofessional looking) checks. I remember looking at the checkbox that asked if I wanted checks and thinking they would be free. I was wrong.

  8. dean says:

After the program is completed, the bonus will post within 30 days. We’re supposed to wait 30 days to find out if what we did counted as a dd? Also can the accounts be closed as soon as the bonus appears?

  9. Eric says:

Jonathan, did you end up receiving the $300 bonus as it’s been over a month since your transfers? I just called them and found out the $5K does not have to be in one transaction.

  10. dean says:

Can anybody confirm what counted as a direct deposit and did anybody receive the bonus yet? I did a transfer from my bank account and it posted as ach but it had my name listed and then p2p. I’m thinking this in not going to count but I won’t know for 30 days.

  11. Skippy says:

Hello. Just a data point… I funded with a Citi Hilton Visa Signature Card (no fee version) and it posted as a purchase. Too late to benefit anyone with this offer since it expired, but might be good to know if the offer comes around again.

  12. Skippy says:

Oops… I also meant to add that I don’t think it was a hard inquiry opening the account online, The PDF application that was generated indicated that only Chex Systems was used.

  13. Eric says:

Has anyone received their bonus yet? If so, what did you use for the direct deposit?

  14. dean says:

It looks like this deal was a bust. Not one person can confirm they received the bonus. I used BB and have not as of today which is more than 30 days since the deposits.

  15. jay says:

I know this deal is done, but wanted to let you guys know. I funded account with Discover and got my statement today. It was coded as “services” and no CA fee!

Mr Charles, can you add this as Data point please?

  16. Eric says:

Has anyone received the $300? If so, what did you use for the “direct deposit”? It has been over 30 days for me and no bonus has posted.

  17. Harry Metzinger says:

I just received my $300 bonus from Sun East today. I had my paychecks direct deposited into Sun East. I do not make $100K+, so it took a few paychecks to reach the $5,000 plateau.

  18. Harry Metzinger says:

My direct deposits exceeded $5,000 on August 20. I had already used SunPay at least 3 times by then.

  19. Jon says:

Unless you funded with a real DD you will not be getting your bonus. It looks like they are manually reviewing each account. Both my wife and I were denied the bonus. I funded with serve and chase (10k total) and she funded with serve (5k).

  20. Eric says:

I received your message by email but for some reason it is not showing on the actual website. I tried Fidelity and Serve and haven’t gotten anything. I will wait 35 days after my last deposit but I won’t be holding my breath. Signing up for that account was a waste of time and $10.

  21. mike says:

bonus posted within 30 days after completing the last direct deposit. funded through actual paycheck though. so offer was legit, just had to be through legit dd i guess.

  22. Eric says:

I received a letter in the mail today asking me to send in paystubs to prove that my direct deposits were “qualifying”. I wonder if more banks will start doing this.

  23. Cheryl says:

Why does it surprise everyone that you can only do legitimate direct deposits as the offer clearly states? So interesting that people are supporting one another in how to get one over on a company. I followed the rules and got my $300 as promised. They have great rates too, happy to have found them.

    • Eric says:

You must be new to following these blogs. Many of the articles and comments are about exploiting loopholes. There is even a post by DoC devoted to which banks trigger direct deposits for other banks. I’m not sure if your comment was directed at me but I was certainly not surprised that I missed out on the bonus. I am not upset at all that Sun East actually enforced their terms. Many banks don’t though.

  24. jay says:

Has anyone closed the account with them? Do they need written notice or just a call will suffice?
