What Happens If Your Report Is Frozen?

If you have a frozen report with Citibank, they are unwilling to pull a different report unless that report is Experian. You can give them a PIN to access the report they want to pull, allowing you to keep that report frozen.

Our Verdict

Citibank will mostly use your Experian report – with Equifax also being quite likely. In rare cases they will pull your TransUnion report instead.

I’m in Hawaii and I’ve applied for two citi cards 4/2015 Hilton Visa and 10/2015 AA and both times they pulled experian in addition to Equifax.

  2. leo says:

I was denied recently due to “too many pulls on report”. They pulled Exp. Can I ask them to pull EQ instead?

  3. John says:

I have had about a dozen Citi cards and they always pulled BOTH experian and equifax. I am in Maryland.

  4. Gary says:

They often double pull (for example; EX and EQ for NY, but with EX frozen it’s fine, and they’ll even auto approve).

    • M says:

Thanks for this datapoint, exactly what I was looking for!

    • duffman says:

how do you know which bureau was pulled? For eg. I know Barclay’s generally pulls TU in NY. On Credit Karma, I see Barclay’s on both my TU and EQ reports. Additionally, both show the same list of opened/closed accounts. If they both show the same information, why does it matter which bureau is pulled?

appreciate it if you can help – a bit confused on how to track pulls :?. Thanks

      • Austin says:

Hard Pulls appear on any of the 3 bureaus Transunion, Equafax, and Experian if a creditor examines it to grant credit. Too many pulls on whatever bureau or bureaus a specific bank examines could cause you to be denied credit. People generally try to spread pulls between the 3 bureaus to increase the chances of approval.

      • Austin says:

You can track hard pulls for Transunion and Equafax on Credit Karma. It’s free no credit card required. For Experian just download the free app. It’s free as well no credit card required.

  5. Ken says:

For both of us in CO Citi pulls both EX and EQ for every CC app.

  6. Allen says:

DP: August 2016, Southern California, Citi Costco Biz, tried to pull EX but it was frozen. Pulled EQ by request (not frozen) without issue.

  7. Tamara says:

Same here as many others, the day I applied they pulled EQ and got approved the next day EX alerted of another pull. Definitely seems to like to double pull but I wonder is that for everyone or borderline approvals.

  8. John says:

Applied – Pulled EQ (auto approve) with EX & TU frozen. Previously apps had pulled EX only.

  9. Matt P says:

Pulled both EQ and EX for me and my wife here in Florida. Annoying. She got auto-denied and I auto-approved.

  10. Sarah says:

2 TYPs and 1 AAdvantage Platinum Select in AZ = all EX

  11. Frank says:

I’m in NM. Applied for the Citi AAdvantage on 2/15 and they pulled EX and EQ. I applied again on 2/23 and they just pulled EQ.
