Avoiding Fees

Savings Account

The Chase Savings Account comes with a monthly service fee of $5. Monthly fee is waived with any ONE of the following:

  • Keep a minimum daily balance of $300 or more
  • Have at least one repeating automatic transfer from your Chase checking account of $25 or more; one time transfers do not qualify
  • Have a linked Chase Premier Plus Checking, Chase Premier Platinum Checking, or Chase Private Client Checking account

Checking Account

The Chase Total Checking account comes with a monthly service fee of $10-$12 which is waived if complete any of the following:

  • Have monthly direct deposits totaling $500 or more
  • Keep a minimum daily balance of $1,500 or more in the checking account
  • Keep an average daily balance of $5,000 or more in any combination of qualifying Chase checking, savings and other balances

Early Account Termination Fee

If you close either account within 6 months of account opening, you will forfeit the bonus.

Our Verdict

The $500 checking + savings bonus isn’t usually publicly available, but it certainly comes around every now and then. The coupon links sometimes run out so it’s a good idea to get the coupon now if you’re considering this deal.

Here’s how to go about getting this $500 bonus:

  • Bring the coupon to a local Chase branch and open a Savings and Checking account.
  • Deposit $25 into the checking and $15,000 into the Savings.
  • Get a direct deposit to the Chase checking account. See what has counted for direct deposit in the past here.
  • Wait until the Tuesday after completing the requirements for the bonuses to post. (Chase tends to always post the bonus on a Tuesday.) If you don’t receive the bonus, use another direct deposit to try and trigger it.
  • Wait 90 days from the date of deposit and transfer over money from savings to checking to bring the balance to $1,500. Then transfer out the remainder of the $15,000 to your regular high-interest savings account, but leave $300 in the Chase savings account. With $1,500 in checking and $300 in savings the account will remain fee-free.
  • Wait until 6 months after the opening date.
  • Withdraw all funds & close the accounts.

You can also choose to just do the checking bonus or just the savings bonus if you don’t want to do both.

Chase bank bonuses are from the best bank bonus around. There is no minimum on the direct deposit requirement, it’s easy to keep the account fee free, and the bonuses are a nice chunk of change. If you’ve never completed a bank bonus before, this is a good one to start with. We’ll be adding this bonus into our list of Best Bank Bonuses.

Remember to always check your Chase preapproved credit card offers when visiting a Chase branch; you might even get lucky and end up with a Sapphire Reserve preapproval or an INK preapproval. Thanks to Out Of Toilet Paper for finding the latest link.

  1. a bird says:

Sigh, just opened the premium plus checking with $300 bonus yesterday (which require 15K deposit)

Do you think it’s possible to get matched to this easier checking option?

    • Chuck says:

It’ll be tough. Even if they’d match a bonus, here you want to match requirements.

      • a bird says:

They dont charge maintenance fee until after Month 2 right?
If yes, might downgrade after bonus posts.

        • Chuck says:

Yeah, you can downgrade the Premier after bonus posts. It’s not so bad. I managed without any fees at all in a similar situation.

        • ProtoKorean says:

I just opened a premier last month on the 21st of April when will the monthly fee hit?

        • Jeff H says:

I downgraded my checking and savings accounts shortly after receiving both bonuses. Result Checking account minimum balance $1500.00 / Savings account minimum balance $300.00.

After you have crossed the six months open line, you may close in branch or call customer service. Closing was fairly easy. Checks in mail within 10 days. Mine was delayed only a couple of days due to a couple of irons in the fire (bill pays) when I closed the account.

    • LiberalValuesDestroyedAmerica says:

I tried an offer match I opened 350 bonus a few days before this. It didn’t work, no cigar

    • Like others pointed out, get bonus and then downgrade. No fee charged for first 2 months.

  2. Phineas says:

Am I eligible for the checking bonus if I currently have a business checking account?

    • Chuck says:

Yes, you can get one bonus of each account type (checking, savings, business) per calendar year.

      • Superchurn says:

excellent. i last got both checking and savings bonuses in 2016, so i should be good to go again?

i currently have both accounts still open, but i’ve been looking for a reason to close them!

      • Devon says:

Confused by your comment as the 2nd bullet in your Fine Print says “Checking offer is not available to existing Chase checking customers. Savings offer is not available to existing Chase savings customers.” Is Fine Print wrong or has things changed hence your comment? Thanks!

      • Trippy says:

Does this count as the date when the bonus post, or account opening?

I opened accounts in Dec last year but the bonus posted this year so was wondering if I would be eligible.

  3. Ariel says:

Hoping someone finds a $500 Business Checking offer coupon-generation link!

    • JT says:

Same here. Got it last year and currently holding out for the $500.

    • Jags says:

They really busted my chops when I tried to open the business checking account last year so I gave up. I went to two different branches and they all wanted documentation about my “business”.

I guess they looked at the computer and saw how many times I’ve done the personal Chase bonus (this year will be 5 years in a row!) and decided to be jerks. It is starting to get awkward going in with the personal bankers and having them see just how many Chase accounts I have. At least I’m a heavy user of their credit cards.

  4. Mike L says:

    I look at it as a $1,500 6 month CD with a 40% interest rate 🙂

    • Superchurn says:

i like the way you think sir

    • Guy Bucktastik says:

      It’s actually a $1200 cd, 50% apy

      • Mike L says:

That sounds better, but unfortunately you must “Keep a minimum daily balance of $1,500 or more in the checking account”.

        • Guy Bucktastik says:

You pay $1200. You get a $300 bonus. That $1500 will keep it fee free.

          You only put in $1200.

          It’s a $1200 cd that earns $300.

          • Mike L says:

In my area, that $12 monthly fee for accounts below $1,500 would amount to $72 over 6 months. Which means you would only net $228 on your $1,200, an effective rate of 38%.

        • Guy Bucktastik says:

Step one – put $1200 in account

          Step 2 – get $300 bonus.

That’s it, now you have $1500 and avoid the fee.

  5. Maddy says:

    Hi All,

I got the checking bonus in Sep 2016 and I closed the account in Apr 2017. When can I open the account to get the bonus again. I am little confused with the calender year.

  6. Dmitry says:

I did this exact offer last year and received the bonus in August of 2016, but closed the account in January 2017. Will I get a bonus if I open new accounts now? Thank you.

    • Chuck says:

      Yes, should work

    • Patti says:

Dmitry, Did you get the Chase checking bonus for 2017?
I’m in the same situation as you. Opened July 2016, closed Jan 2017.
Back in Feb or March Chase offered a lesser bonus but one could apply online. I was denied but it didn’t say why. My husband and son were also denied though we’ve been hitting M&T pretty hard until recently. I wonder if the odds of being approved are better in branch?
Maybe I’ll wait until early November after I close out another M&T account. I don’t want to drive 45 mins to a Chase branch only to be humiliated. 🙁

  7. Frito Pendejo says:

Jackpot! Procrastination wins the day again. I never felt like driving to a Chase branch to do the $300 offers. Looks like my wife and I will be taking a trip to the city.

  8. Max says:

DP: As of March/April 2017, Alliant worked to trigger the bonus and keep the account fee-free.

  9. Markie says:

If you’re in the military, they do not charge monthly fees, even for the premier checking.

  10. NBG says:

Can someone provide a DP for out of state?. I live in PA. Went to closest branch in NJ and was told to use a coupon i have to be within 30 miles of the branch. Wasted $10 of my gas :(.
I then called another branch near this one and that lady says all they need is to be in-person.

    • NBG says:

Was able to successfully open in another branch. Did only the checking as I’m not willing to park 15k in savings.

    • KP says:

I live in Philly and plan to drive up to the Trenton branch. Which branch did you try first and which one worked for you?

      • NBG says:

Ewing branch worked and good folks there.. My first try was at Trenton and they flat out denied. The branch was in itself uninviting inside as if no one cared.

        • KP says:

Awesome. I’ll just go on to the Ewing branch and won’t bother with the Trenton one. Thanks for this.

      • SkinnyElvis says:

I live in the 215 and I stopped at the Branchburg office inside a shop rite and opened an account without a problem. The banker noted I was from PA and I told him the truth which was I was nearby for my dtrs softball tournament which was between games.

    • Jeff says:

Live in North Carolina. Opened in a central Florida branch in July for the previous offer. Both my wife and I. No problems whatsoever. Already got our bonuses.

  11. Stingerzing says:

Weird thing happened: This is the second time I’ve done this combo, opened the new sets of accounts about 50 days ago. Got the bonus for the checking and then moved it all out as you only need 5000 or more in any combination to keep fee free. Still waiting on savings bonus with 15000 there but now noticed they automatically closed my checking account, probably from inactivity. Any implications on the checking bonus or future savings bonus?

  12. Chao says:

Any DP which will trigger the DD for Chase? Does Paypal transfer still work as DD for Chase?

  13. Michael says:

What documents do they require you to have to open a checking account? Is a driver’s license good enough?? And does it matter if I’m out of state? Chase isn’t in my state. Thanks!

    • Jim says:

Not familiar with out of state, but yep, a driver’s license and sometimes a credit card as second form of identification.

  14. Kumar says:

I had opened the checking account in March 2016. After receiving the 300$ bonus, I have changed the same account to “Savings” and I still have the savings account active as of today. Now will I be eligible to receive the 300$ checking bonus, if I open a new checking account? Please let me know.

  15. Johnz says:

I think your fifth bullet’s steps in ‘Our Verdict’ are timing-sensitive for some people and can incur one monthly checking account fee if those steps are done too early in the checking statement cycle.

In the case (like me) where somebody’s relying on the 90 days of $15K Savings balance to keep Checking fee-free (because Savings’ $15K balance satisfies Checking’s fee waiver for an ‘average daily balance of $5,000 or more in any combination of qualifying Chase checking, Savings…’), then doing Our Verdict’s fifth bullet’s steps of ‘transfer over money from savings to checking to bring the’ checking ‘balance to $1,500’ and reducing Savings balance to $300 is time-sensitive:
If I reduce Savings balance from $15K to $300 before approx 1/3 of the statement cycle elapses I will average less than $5K combined balances for that checking cycle and incur a monthly Checking account fee for that one cycle. To avoid the fee I should wait and do those steps anytime on or after 12 days past the prior statement cycle end date. (Last year my Chase checking statement cycles varied from 28 to 34 days long.)

    • Chuck says:

I hear your point theoretically. In practice, I’m guessing Chase goes with the closing date to determine if you’ll get hit with a fee. So since on the statement closing date there was $1,500 in the checking and $300 in the savings it’ll be fee-free.

      • Johnz says:

It’s the 6th bullet point that closes the accounts after the 6 months elapses to avoid early cloing penalty.
We’re talking about Checking’s monthly maintenance fee and the 5th bullet point steps that occur right after the $15K has sat the required 90 days in savings after which most of it can be pulled out.

    • Rob says:

I took my name off of a joint Chase checking account a few days ago. The account is still open, just only in my wife’s name now. Does anyone know if I would be eligible for the bonus or would I have to wait 90 days?

  16. Chap says:

So I went to sign up for the Chase $500 bonus. The banker accidentally put all $15,025 into my checking and failed to split between savings. I’ve messaged Chase but the banker said I can simply transfer $15,000 over from my checking to savings and still qualify for the savings offer. However, the fine print says ‘new’ chase money which I assume is no longer new after it hits my checking account. Has anyone run into this situation before?

    • Pete says:

      Yea, you’ll be fine.

I helped a family member with a similar situation, deposited the $15k in the checking first, then opened up the savings and transferring over from checking and still received the bonus.

The personal banker we dealt with said “new” funds are those deposited within 10 days — so because we deposited the $15k in the checking account and opened the savings within that 10 day period, she said it was fine. And voila, 90 days later, the $200 bonus was credited.

      • Chap says:

Sorry I’m late but thanks Pete! I just went ahead and dropped another $15k in and then pulled the initial out just in case but glad that counts.

  17. Juston says:

I see several people stating that it is one bonus per calendar year, but there was a question asked above that has gone unanswered. Will this work for people that currently have a checking account?

Chase is my main bank so I don’t want to close my main account to do this bonus. It used to be that I could open a new account as an existing customer and still get the bonus, but I haven’t done it in several years as I thought that had changed. I don’t have a savings account, so I will definitely be doing that one. I am selling my house which has 10 years of equity on on a 15 year mortgage, so I am looking for some of these larger $$$ opening deposit bonuses to park all that money for half a year. Any other bank bonuses that require $5k + for deposits that I should be looking at?

    • Juston says:

I should clarify that I read the fine print and I see that it says not available to existing customers, but that doesn’t mean it is enforced. I was just getting mixed opinions by reading the comments.

Also, for my last question about the other accounts, it can be personal and/or business if anyone has suggestions!

  18. Ken says:

I went to a Chase branch to open a checking using this bonus on Saturday. Despite it clearly stating on the coupon that you can earn the bonus once per calendar year, the banker insisted it was a rolling 12-months. She asked a supervisor/manager who said the same thing. Then, she called some internal help desk and they confirmed that too. So, rather than take my chances, I didn’t open the account. I last opened a Chase account in early 2016, earned the bonus in May 2016, and closed the account in January 2017 (still more than 90 days ago).

    • stingerzing says:

I got the 500 combo last fall and closed. Then I opened a new one in february and got the checking bonus again. So I don’t think that’s right.

    • JuicyJosh says:

+1 on stingers comment. I opened acct 6/2016 and closed 1/2017. Applied for acct #2 in 4/2017. Was approved and received bonus. Waiting to close currently.

  19. Tim says:

Can someone explain how to fulfill the direct deposit requirement w/o setting it up with my paycheck through my employer? Do I do a cash advance with a credit card???

  20. Charles S. says:

04/17/17 – Opened Chase Total Checking in branch. Opening deposit with a $1500 personal check.
    05/05/17 – DD of $50 from work.
    05/09/17 – $300 bonus posted

Now to wait till I can remove the opening deposit 🙁

  21. Trippy says:

I opened an account last December and the bonus posted this year January. I assume I won’t be eligible for a bonus this year?

  22. Rena says:

I’d really appreciate some help: If I want to use Barclays online savings for the direct deposit requirement, would I just need to add the Chase account to Barclays as an external account and then do a one-time transfer? I’m somewhat confused because under the transfer tab for Barclays nowhere does it say “ACH.”

  23. Dave says:

The eligibility statement does not include any “rolling twelve months” wording.

“Bonus/Account Information: Checking offer is not available to existing Chase checking customers. Savings offer is not available to existing Chase savings customers. Both offers are not available to those with fiduciary accounts, or those whose accounts have been closed within 90 days or closed with a negative balance.”

  24. Dean says:

Unique situation. I burned Chase by not paying a couple credit cards 10 years ago. I’m forever (I assume) blacklisted from getting another card from them but I wonder if I can open a bank account.

  25. Dan says:

Schwab moneylink deposit from investor account (not investor checking) DOES NOT work to trigger DD, sent 4/19, no bonus posted as of today 5/12.

Sent Wells Fargo checking 5/8, hopping that will trigger. I have DD setup, but i want the $300 NOW.

  26. Vivian says:

Hi, I currently have a checking account from TCF bank. All deposits from this account is coded as ACH Deposit, so would it work as direct deposit? Thanks!

  27. Harry says:

So when I opened I forgot about the $25 deposit at opening and so did the teller. Would this be a problem with getting the $300? Anyone else forgot but still got the bonus?

    • Harry says:

To answer my own question–no it wasn’t a problem. $300 came in today after getting paycheck DD on the 1st.

  28. Saabfan says:

So i was denied for the last chase account that i tried to open online (reason: credit report, although my score is pretty good). Will I also be denied for this in-branch only account?

    • Saabfan says:

The answer is no. I was approved in branch. Dp….the bank rep indicated that it was a hard pull,

      • NBG says:

Some bankers don’t know the difference between and hard pull and soft pull. I was told it was a hard pull by one and only to be correct ed by another that it was a soft pull. It will do a Hard pull, if you opted for Overdraft coverage.

Did you get an alert from your Credit monitoring service?.

  29. NBG says:

Anyone got the bonus today with the new offer with ACH from Wells Fargo?. Hopefully it posts later today as past trend suggests every tuesday is bonus day.

    • NBG says:

Ignore my earlier comment. Just loged in again and see the $300 pending. So Wells Fargo ACH /push works. $600 haul between me and wife. Thanks Doc.

  30. Chap says:

Barclay ACH has worked for me in the past but not this time. Posted last Thursday – Tuesday now, and no pending bonus. Not sure if just me or it is no longer triggering. Will try paycheck.

    • Pete says:

Any update on this with the Barclays ACH on your end?

My ACH push went through last Tuesday, a week later, still nothing yet…

      • Chap says:

Nope! I waited 2 weeks (tried two different times) and still no bonus. My paycheck hits today so it seems like I will know by next Tuesday whether it is my account or Barclays.

      • Chap says:

        Hi Pete,

A normal DD resulted in the bonus posting today. Looks like Barclays may not work anymore.

  31. Omar says:

DP: td ameritrade of 101 USD Worked to trigger the bonus and it posted on Tuesday.

  32. Charles S. says:

4/17 – Opened checking account in branch with $1500 check
    5/05 – DD from employer for $50
    5/09 – $300 bonus posted!

  33. CruwL says:

ACH Transfer $501 on may 17th from barlcay online savings shows BARCLAYS BANK DE DEPOSIT PPD and type ACH credit

Did not get the bonus yesterday, will see if it posts next week if not will have to try cap360 or something else.

Those who got the bonus this week did your deposit code as type ACH Credit?

    • Kristian says:

I received the bonus yesterday morning due to this push…

      May 18, 2017
      ACH credit

  34. Alyssa says:

If my 90 day date for the savings bonus is on a Tuesday, my bonus should post the following Tuesday right? Just making sure I understand

  35. Curmudgeon says:

    New offer, good until 7/17/17:

$200 for Total checking account, set up direct deposit
$150 for savings acct, deposit $10k, leave for 90 days

  36. Chris M says:

Any more data points on opening one of these accounts in a Chase branch if you are from out of state? I live in Virginia, but I am visiting family in New Jersey next week and will go a few dozen miles out of my way if I can open these accounts as a Virginia resident.

    • Dave says:

Shouldn’t be a problem.. The closest branch for me is out of state,
and takes four hours roundtrip. Still worth it tho, and I stop at a
few places on the way back for enjoyment.

  37. Pete says:

Any folks with a recent data point with regards to what ACH pushes qualify as a DD?

Reviewing the Knowledge Base page, but nothing too recent…

  38. BlackBerries says:

Anyone get the bonus (recently) doing ACH (coded as PPD) via capital one or capital one 360?

    • ric says:

I tried ACH via capital one (not 360) and it doesn’t trigger bonus.

Anyone have luck with any other ACH?

      • BlackBerries says:

I tried capital one 360 and it was coded as PPD but a week later no bonus posted…

      • Avi says:

Wells Fargo ACH still works as of today.

        • Max says:

What wellsfargo service are you using to trigger ACH? Zelle and surepay haven’t worked to trigger bonus for me.

          • Avi says:

It’s the “transfer money” option within Wells Fargo online. I can’t remember if it has a more specific name, but it’s not the “send money” option.

  39. 007 says:

    I feel kinda bad.

Last year, I did this bonus for the first time. The banker clearly thought I was actually going to use the account and didn’t know that I was just doing it for the bonus. It took her an hour to set up, although she did a good job.

Today, I went to a different branch (Chase Private Client branch). The guy was awesome and had me in and out in 15 minutes. Even gave me the option of not even having a debit card, which wasn’t on the table last year. However, after I left, I realized he set up the Plus Checking and Plus Savings (higher balance requirements after bonus posts). I went back, had a chat, he said he can downgrade instantly and no effect on bonus (confirmed several times). He did as he told, but seemed a little shaken/upset. Not sure whether it is just that particular location (lots of high rollers), or if he was going to miss out on some kind of bonus/quota because he thus just opened a Total Checking and basic Savings rather than the Plus versions.

Oh well. I guess the homework is read what you sign on the screen carefully, even if the banker seems like a good guy. Feel kinda bad if it affected his yearly bonus/quota, though.

    • Avi says:

Pretty much the exact same thing happened to my wife. The guy signed her up for the higher level accounts, and was annoyed when she asked to downgrade because it wasn’t the accounts she wanted. There must be some kind bonus involved for them.

  40. BHanna says:

    Confirming DP

Transferred money to my Vanguard Settlement fund, than transferred from Vanguard to Chase. The “sale” counted as a DD, and was listed as follows.

” VANGUARD SELL INVESTMENT PPD ID: VMC RED ACH credit $501.04 $526.04″

Please note that after you add the new account to your Vanguard, and verify the two micro-deposits, you typically have to wait 7-10 days for them to verify that it is your account… Alternatively you can just call in and tell them that you need access to the funds more urgently and they will offer you to wire the money, decline that and insist that it is ACHed to your account given that you already verified the two deposits… Another department will go through the security identity verification questions with you, and then can process the transfer over the phone….

    Hope this helps someone 🙂

  41. RAZ says:

This is my first post on this site – I really appreciate all the great information that I’ve received from this site over the last couple of years.

5/10/17: Opened Chase Checking and Savings account
5/19/17: Barclays ACH – coded as DE Deposit
5/19/17: Alliant ACH – coded as Online Wd
6/1/17: Vanguard ACH – coded as Sell Investment
    6/6/17: $300 bonus received

I suspect that only the Vanguard transfer triggered the bonus but I can’t be certain. Chase says the bonus will be paid within 10 business days of the direct deposit – that would mean that only the Vanguard ACH could have triggered the bonus (10 business from the two transfers made on 5/19/17 would be 6/5/17).

    • Yes, would only be the Vanguard. Bonus posts the Tuesday after receiving the direct deposit. Thanks for the DP.

    • Pete says:

      Thanks for the DPs

Mind clarifying for Alliant — was that an ACH push, appearing as a deposit in Chase? Noticed you mentioned it coded as a “Wd”, so I wonder if that might have been an Alliant ACH pull or withdrawal, instead.

I was hoping to use Alliant to qualify for my DD. No Vanguard accounts, alas!

      • RAZ says:

It was an ACH push from Alliant to Chase — that’s just the way it coded. I think you’re out of luck trying to use Alliant to trigger the direct deposit requirement.

        • Pete says:

          Thanks for the quick response.

I’m looking at opening an individual Vanguard account since you and a few others have had success with it.

I helped a family member with a Roth with Vanguard a few years ago and recall it was quite easy and fast to open — has that been your experience with the individual/taxable account? Reading their account fees, if I sign up for e-delivery, there should be no annual or minimum fees. So I’m thinking of doing a small $50 account to ACH push to Chase.

  42. RVD says:

Great experience signing up but horrible experience afterwards. Account got closed as fraud same day because I initiated two transfers on separate days totaling $15k which were flagged as fraud by the “loss prevention” department. I was given no opportunity to dispute the closing or to indicate that the transfers were legitimate. My transfers were cancelled and my initial $25 was mailed to me as a check and I am apparently banned from Chase banking (Chase CCs are untouched) for at least 5 years, possibly for life (depending on who I asked). Loss prevention reps were very unpleasant and refused to give me any details beyond that. Checked my Chex and everything is/was clean so it was apparently just the transfers that sunk. Not sure how I was supposed to get $15k deposited if $15k of transfers is “fraud”.

    • Rupert Chatwin says:

Geez, that blows. Did you sign up in person or online? More importantly, were your transfers totaling $15k via check, ACH, or some other method?

  43. Jake says:

Just finished a 4 hour round trip from Baltimore to Trenton to get this bonus. The signup process was painless once I got there

    • Kevin says:

Ha! I’m from the Baltimore area and I was considering going to that one too for this! You went to the one at 2735 S Broad St correct? That one seems to be the easiest one to get too and the quickest. How long did it take to set up?

  44. savemesf says:

ACH push from TD Ameritrade still triggers the DD bonus 🙂

  45. Olivia says:

This offer can also be accessed whenever you order a USPS mail forwarding service. Will come up as one of the coupons. It doesn’t matter if you actually are moving or not. Can try forwarding mails from parents/relatives/friends’ address.

I opened a checking + savings for my mom in March; pushed $500 from her Wells Fargo Checking; got the $300 bonus for checking the following Tuesday. Still waiting for the 90-day to pass.

Two weeks ago opened them for my mother-in-law; again pushed $500 from Wells Fargo; got the bonus today (Tuesday)!

Plan on opening them for my father-in-law when he comes visiting us. It seems true that Chase tend to post the bonus on Tuesdays.

  46. 007 says:

Serve still working to trigger $300 bonus (currently listed as Pending).

  47. Will Ryan says:

DP: I did Savings only and it took me 12 calendar days to fund the $15,000 in total. The bonus posted to my account the Tuesday following 90 days from account opening.

So no wait to get the bonus and it was from account opening, not when I got the $15,000 in there.

I wasn’t expecting to be able to move the money for another 1-2 weeks and to get the bonus for another 4-5 weeks 🙂

  48. JS says:

Anyone have a code and not going to use it? I could use a code. Thanks.

  49. Shaun says:

They’ve been sending me this same offer through the mail. Got my second one today, expires August 7th.

  50. Robert says:

CO360 and Alliant DO NOT work to trigger DD bonus.

  51. Jae Bae says:

    Data Point – Chase
    – Direct Deposit Transfer from Santander on 06/16
    – $300 sign up bonus on 06/20

    • Pol says:

Did you choose the option “Transfer Funds > To Someone Else” from your Santander online banking?

It is either that option or “Between My Santander Accounts” under the “Transfer Funds” option.

Also, the list of DD’s for Chase has Santander crossed out. So is this a new data point for Santander that makes Santander a working DD for Chase bonuses?

  52. Gmoney says:

Has anyone successfully opened this type of account that’s “in branch only” online and gotten the bonus? ….asking for a friend…

Though the steps at the top of the offer explicitly say going into a branch, the fine print doesn’t call out going in the branch. “To receive the $300 checking bonus: 1) Open a new Chase Total Checking account, which is subject to approval…”

    • Bob says:

Wondering the same thing because on the online app, there’s a field to put in the promo code.

    • justdoit says:

Or has anyone tried a Chase in branch offer online and not received the bonus?

    • Gmoney says:

The answer is no, you can’t even open the account with the coupon. I just tried for my SO cause there’s no way I’m getting her to sit with a banker for an hour.

The online application lets you enter in the coupon code right away then proceed to give all your information even asking for all the compliance questions and asking you to create a user name and password. Then it asks for the coupon code again (which is prefilled form the initial app page). Then it proceeds to tell you that that coupon code cannot be redeemed online. Not sure why they couldn’t tell you right away.

“We’re unable to process your information. The Coupon Code you entered cannot be redeemed online. For assistance, please call us at 1-877-242-7372, or visit a Chase branch near you. To continue your application without the Coupon Code, click “Proceed Without Coupon Code.””

      • justdoit says:

Thanks, very helpful and at least they don’t let you open the account with code, transfer your money then find out you don’t get the bonus. I don’t like going to branches and waiting either and it looks like I won’t be travelling near a branch anytime soon so I wish Chase allowed all states in on these deals. Just let us apply online and email your sales pitches.

  53. MoreSun says:

Lol, figures- I bought my coupon on eBay last week!

  54. captainsave says:

My 90 day period is over on 8/8. -.-

  55. Tom says:

I just opened a Chase checking account for my wife with the $300 promo code. This is her first checking account so she plans to keep it. She does not have another account under her name so how can she direct deposit into the Chase account? Can I use my Wells Fargo account to somehow send money to her checking? Her workplace does not do direct deposit either.

    • justdoit says:

When you add an ACH transfer account at it asks for the account and routing numbers then makes 2 verification deposits then you go back to and enter those amounts, so they might not also verify by name. I’m thinking you can ACH to anyone but you might want to message WF and ask if they allow ACH transfers to a spouse’s account at another bank.

Amazon Payments might be your next best option or if there’s no minimum for this DD you could try Topcashback. If you don’t have $ in TCB it takes time to get credited though. You could ask TCB which stores credit the fastest, maybe those with the shortest return periods. Or look in “good to know” under “Terms & Conditions and other useful information” for each store. My Walmart purchase says estimated payable in 14 weeks, maybe because their return period is up to 90 days.

  57. Steve says:

Data point: Opened last week and DD’d using Amex Serve. Got the checking bonus today, so that still works as an option to trigger the checking bonus as of July 5, 2017

  58. mistike says:

I opened this yesterday. Took an hour. I asked if I could fund this by CC and she said yes but it will be coded as cash advance.

  59. Yu says:

Does Chase do Chex system check?

Is soft pull the same as Chex system check?

  60. Dir says:

Amex Serve withdraw to chase checking still works as direct deposit as of 07/06/2017.

  61. tribeman55 says:

Just brought the $300 checking code to a branch and they turned me away saying my account has a note on it saying I am no longer allowed to open accounts at Chase with coupon codes. Banker said he has never seen that kind of note before.

Anyone else ever get that/hear of someone getting that?

    • Chuck says:

      Whoa! Never heard of that.

    • Wonder if it’s just a previous banker being annoyed they didn’t get paid out on commission or something. Did you try another branch?

      • tribesman55 says:

I signed up for a $200 savings account with Chase in April and received the bonus a couple days ago. I can try another branch tomorrow. The banker seemed friendly and started the application for the checking account and took my SSN, he turned very unfriendly and rude quickly after that and said he couldn’t open the account with my coupon because there was a note on my account not to allow coupons anymore, but offered to open the account without the coupon.

        • Eric says:

Last year the banker told me he was going to put that exact note on my account. I figured he was bluffing so I went again this year. I had no trouble opening my account.

How many times have you done the Chase Checking bonus? Did you go the same branch multiple times?

          • tribesman55 says:

I’ve been doing it for years and I’ve always gone to the same branch. I went to a different branch today and used the coupon no problem. There must be some salty bankers at that other branch so I won’t be going back there.

    • sirtheta says:

Ah fuck, I totally forgot to post about something similar.

I haven’t heard about this, specifically, but it is the case that bankers can notate your account if they think you’re “gaming” the bonuses, which will result in you never again receiving targeted *banking* offers (separate from credit card or other offers). This also occurs if you open an account with a coupon and close it within a year; after the first instance you don’t get targeted *banking* offers for 2 years. After the second instance, you will never again receive targeted *banking* offers.

Of course, none of that has to do with a specific exclusion from opening an account with a coupon — that I haven’t heard of, but maybe it’s related (or being misinterpreted?). This should be very banker-dependent, though, so I’d definitely try again elsewhere.

      • tribesman55 says:

Used the coupon no questions asked at a different branch this morning. I will be avoiding that other branch from now on.

  62. Yu says:

once you opened the checking/saving account with Chase, are you able to initiate the transfer from chase and pull the money from extern account into Chase’ account?

    • Dave says:

That should be fine for funding the savings account (?),
but it won’t qualify for the checking promotion.

  63. Dmitry Kisselev says:

Went today and sign up for the offer. Chase rep offered next break down for the saving account offer:
    $75 for $5000 balance for 90 days
    $200 for $15000 balance for 90 days
    $300 for $20000 balance for 90 days.

The offer is valid until the end of the month 7/30/17. Not sure if that was targeted or publicly available.

    • That $300 offer is very tempting, what did you go for? I imagine it’s targeted.

      • Dmitry Kisselev says:

Nothing yet. Rep talked like he seen and offered this before.

I have to collect cash first in a somewhat short period of time :). Once you signup you only have 10 days to produce the cash. So I elect to get cash first and then come to the branch and sign up for saving account offer as a separate transaction.

He said that offer is not upgradable. So once you select $ amount, that would be it. Yet it is available until the end of the month and it should be fine to sign up for as a separate transaction.

  64. EV says:

Opened the Total Checking on July 3rd and had a $25 DD from Wells Fargo post on Monday (07/10). Still no bonus … I suppose it was just too late for this Tuesday’s bonus posting?

I read on Reddit that even the 2 mini trial deposits from Wells Fargo to verify the account triggered the bonus. In may case that happened on Thursday, July 6th … no luck yet.

  65. Robert says:

Signed up for the account on May 26 and did an initial deposit of $25 with a debit card. I still haven’t received the bonus, and I have had the following transactions post:

Jun 2, 2017 Alliant CU. ONLINE WD PPD ACH credit $100.00
Jun 13, 2017 CAPITAL ONE N.A. CAPITALONE PPD ACH credit $100.00
    Jun 21, 2017 SCHWAB BANK P2P ACH credit $50.00
Jun 27, 2017 Acorns Investing Transfer PPD ACH credit $3.08
Jul 3, 2017 SCHWAB BROKERAGE MONEYLINK PPD ACH credit $500.00
Jul 12, 2017 BMO HARRIS BANK EXT TRNSFR ACH credit $503.08

I’m convinced that if the bonus didn’t already post, it’s not going to. I have had a Chase checking once before, but closed it last year.

I know I’m not supposed to call the bank, but in this case I’m calling. Will update

  66. Kenny says:

Opened my account today. The very first thing the rep did was straight up ask me if I was only opening the account for the bonus. I told him that depends on how I like the account (which is true in my case). He said fair enough and saif if I was only opening the account for the bonus that I couldn’t close it within 7 months or the bonus would be withdrawn (think he meant 6).

  67. MP says:

“I haven’t heard about this, specifically, but it is the case that bankers can notate your account if they think you’re “gaming” the bonuses.”

Well, in the case of the “savings” account, I don’t know why anybody in his right mind would ever open it, if not for the bonus. Since Chase pays absolutely no interest (you’ll even lose money if you keep under $300 in the account), the bonus is simply interest earned on a short-term loan to them.

  68. Steven says:

8/23/17: No bonus posted to acct 15 days after SCH deposit

          • never Miss Dr of Credit says:

An update: Sent a secure message asking about the missing bonus. Chase responded that the promotion code was not attached to the account and asked me to resolve it with the branch that opened my account. Went to the branch and showed them again the email coupon I had received directly from Chase and their promise of $300 bonus. They apologized for the omission and added the coupon code to the account.
Also mentioned that they are not sure if the Vanguard deposit will trigger the bonus since it was coded as “VANGUARD SELL INVESTMENT PPD ID: VMC RED ACH credit.” Now I’ll have to wait and see. Initiated another ACH from a credit union. Will update after next Tuesday.

PS: Yes I know even DoctoOofCredit suggests not contacting Chase if the bonus is not triggered by an ACH.

          • Thanks for the update

    • Pete says:

Same here, no go for Schwab brokerage as a DD trigger. Waited a full ~10 days, and no checking bonus on either Tuesday

  70. THinDC says:

    DP: Bonus posted today, 7/18/17

7/10: Opened account in branch with $40 deposit
7/13: $500.44 transfer posted from Merrill Edge (brokerage – coded as ACH push)

I don’t see many Merrill brokerage DPs around, so it seems like it’s a good alternative to Schwab for those who have it.

  71. Derek says:

I went to their site to enter my email address to be sent the code yesterday afternoon. Still no email. I went back and entered another email address earlier this morning and still nothing. Does it typically take this long to be sent the email with the coupon code?

  72. drhaus says:

Another Negative DP: No bonus this week for me from Chase after Wells Fargo transfer.

7/3: Account opened with $40 in branch
7/7: $1,000 ACH credit from Wells Fargo, posted as WELLS FARGO IFI DDA TO DDA PPD ID: INTFITRVOS
7/18: no bonus, I’ll have to try from another account

    What a bummer.

    • drhaus says:

Just to provide an update on this, I called the bank to ensure my promo code was attached to my account and found it wasn’t even though I opened in a branch (and was assured it was by the banker.) So they added it last night. I just had another small Wells Fargo transfer hit my account this morning so hopefully I’ll receive the bonus next week.

  73. Sergey says:

If I opened a checking account in October, 2016 and then closed it in May, 2017, do I qualify for the savings account bonus?

  74. David says:

    Question about direct deposit:

I setup an ACH from my local credit union.

    Transaction Type: Electronic transfer
Appears on statement as: Deposit from …..

Does this mean it should count as direct deposit requirements? Or should it be a different transaction type?

  75. Justin says:

Tried posting earlier, not sure what happened. Went to chase to open an account. I got a bonus last October, guy signs me up and actually creates the account. Then they say it’s within the last 12 months! I said it’s calendar year, account was already opened unfortunately as well before he told me this. Manager came over and said it’s per 1 year so i’d have to wait until October. I didn’t want to argue so i left and told them to close the account. I assume i probably need to wait 90 days before even attempting this again, sadly it ends in August =/

    • Do you still have the account open? It’s per calendar year (also can’t have had account in last 90 days) so just ignore what the rep says

      • Justin says:

It is still technically open. I Sm’d as soon as i read your comment and i’m going to go into a different branch today. he said he closed it last night but it’s still showing open online.

  76. MP says:

Time for me to report back to the gang! 🙂

Yey! Made it right under the wire! I got my $300 Chase checking bonus! It posted on Tuesday morning, the week after the DD posted, just like everybody else said. It’s still early for the savings bonus.

First things first! Will, a huge “thank you” for all your hard charitable work for everybody’s financial benefit! I appreciate your integrity as well. Thanks also to all other contributors to this website!

While the savings account was a piece of cake for me (just wrote a check), the checking was challenging because I don’t have direct deposit from work. When I reviewed the DP’s, WF was the obvious choice, but I didn’t have WF accounts and didn’t feel like opening them partly because of the hassle and partly because of potential loss of future opportunities. I tried all my existing accounts, just in case, but no luck. None of them worked, just like people were saying. What really annoyed me is that I did have a legitimate payment for some online work, but this company only transfers to PayPay. So, with the deadline looming, I finally opened a WF savings account and it was the winner!

I wasn’t sure till the last second if even this was going to work because there were some contradicting recent DP’s with this exact coding… It’s baffling that some worked and some didn’t… I think the reasons it didn’t work for some may be: 1) they’ve received the bonus before; 2) they have some other issues with Chase; 3) perhaps the round amounts… This time I also made sure the amount was not round because legitimate amounts of this type usually are not.

What doesn’t work is not news, but some recent confirmation wouldn’t hurt. Those don’t work:

CAPITAL1 P2P NAME WEB ID (regular CO savings, not 360)

Btw, some people were saying that WF’s trial deposits triggered the bonus for them. That didn’t happen for me.

I know you guys are pretty succinct, but I have to share the story of my stupidity!;-) While people have been picking up free money for years when it was easy and just about any ACH counted, I was receiving the offers from Chase and thinking that 1) Chase was desperate for customers; 2) It’d be nice to get this money, but switching a checking account is too much of a hassle. It never occurred to me that you don’t HAVE to switch accounts! You can just add them! I can’t believe what moron I was and as always I discover things when it’s too late. Granted, I also like my “exceptional” credit scores and squeaky clean financial affairs in any way and I’m kind of afraid of walking on the edge in this respect, but as somebody was saying: your perfect record shouldn’t be a dusty trophy; you should take advantage of it!

  77. MP says:

“He said fair enough and saif if I was only opening the account for the bonus that I couldn’t close it within 7 months or the bonus would be withdrawn (think he meant 6).”

It is 6 months, but this counting is kinda iffy because you don’t know how they count it. I’ll wait till there are at least 6 statements. It’s hardly worth messing things up by not waiting a bit longer. I’ll also close it in a branch and make sure everything’s in order. Actually, I may even leave the savings account for potential use for other bonuses. You only need to keep $300 in order to avoid the fee.

I went to three different Chase branches in New Jersey while I was nearby (I live in PA), and at the first one was told I needed to live within 30 miles of a branch to get the bonus, the next one I sat in the lobby for over an hour without me or anyone ahead of me being served so I left, and the third one I was told the regional manager had just (about two weeks ago) instituted a policy that you have to live within 50 miles of a branch.

All in all, I’m not sure what the real story is, but I gave up.

  80. drhaus says:

Got my bonus today of $300…last week confirmed with Chase my promotional code was not attached to my account when I opened in branch. For existing Chase customers, double check the banker who originally told me the promotional code was already associated with my account as an existing credit cardholder. Unfortunately the process of adding the code resulted in a hard pull on my credit.

I had two Wells Fargo ACH transfers hit last Thursday ($20 and $25) and got the bonus today. They posted as:

    • Dave says:

When the coupon is presented in branch, and applied to the application,
the promotion is printed on one of the pages of the kit you receive.
The Chase reps have always confirmed it while reviewing the kit.
Did you see it printed on your papers?

      • J says:

That’s interesting. My banker was very easy going and simply asked if I even needed the packet at all, I said no and she reassured me that the bonus was attached.

        • drhaus says:

I did not see it on the paperwork and just assumed it was there. Didn’t think anything of it at the time since banker indicated the promo code was already entered in the system and attached to my profile. Worked out in the end but did result in the hard credit pull for some reason

I’m assuming the reference to having “a Chase checking account” opened would disqualify you from this offer is referring to either personal OR business accounts? I have a business checking open and just wanted to make sure I would need to close that and wait the 90 days before going for another one of these offers. Thanks.

  93. John says:

I just want to confirm that if I opened the checking/saving accounts on 8/3/2017, I can close the accounts after 2/3/2018.

Does it consider closing accounts after six months?

“Account Closing: If either the checking or savings account is closed by the customer or Chase within six months after opening, we will deduct the bonus amount for that account at closing.” Citibank

  94. Derek says:

Does anyone know if I can A) Open the Premier Plus Checking for Military and get a $300 bonus (I have the coupon for the Premier Plus Checking, I’m just not sure if it works for the Military account), or B) open the Total Checking and change it to the Premier Plus for Military at a later date.

Also, I’m not sure if someone said it somewhere else, but is this one per household or person?

    • You should be able to product change at a later date, you should also be able to ask all these questions when applying in branch.

      • Derek says:

Thank you, the branch is about an hour drive, so I was trying to find out before. It looks like I may have my answer from another person though. Thanks again.

    • lop says:

You can probably do either, but I did A this past March. I opened in branch (in NY) for the $300 bonus (I only did the checking bonus). I told the banker I was a vet and after he checked my VA ID he upgraded me instantly to the Premier Plus Checking account. No product change was necessary for me, and the military account is always fee free (no minimum balance or other requirements). I opened the account 4March, followed DOC’s directions the following week (pushed from Santander and WF so don’t know for sure which worked) and like others here the bonus posted to my account the following Tuesday (14March).

  95. Kola says:

I purchased one of these on eBay last night… bad timing. Oh well, only $1.

  96. mo says:

So for my novice question… Paypal doesn’t work for direct deposit? (I didn’t see it listed as working or not working, but I did see a mention of a code that I am not familiar with). I did see one or two credit unions listed on the “working” list. Should I try my local bank to see if that will count as a direct deposit?

Hoping they’ll come out with the business checking bonus before the end of the year.

Will be opening an account today at a branch in NJ. Will report back.

    • Ry5 says:

Opened it this afternoon in Raritan NJ. Couldn’t have been easier, even with 8+ open checking accounts in the last 2 months.

  102. Austin Auclair says:

Can this be combined with the referral system?

  103. Jack says:

    Thanks Doc…got email coupons…

  104. Gadget says:

Awesome. I am making a trip in about a week and thought this was going to be a bust this year because the coupon went away. I did Chase checking late last year, and wisely closed the account in the required amount of time to collect again this year. (Screwed up leaving US Bank open, so not all my decisions are winners)

Had no issues w/ Chase and the bonus, other than taking a while to get the account in branch. Didn’t do the Savings one last year because I was doing Citi 15K, but now Citi is only taking the 15K every 180 days between accounts so I am ready. I guess Chase gets a turn to hold my emergency funds.

    • Dave says:

“Screwed up leaving US Bank open, so not all my decisions are winners”

Guilty of that also. I’m confident that they’ll have a bonus available in
a couple months from now tho 🙂

      • Eric says:

I wonder if we are the only 3 people to make this screw-up. Would you believe that I still haven’t closed my USB accounts?

What makes you think that there will be another bonus so soon? Don’t they usually only have bonuses once per year?

        • Dave says:

Oh, sry Eric, my belief is based on wishfull thinking alone.
I haven’t noticed the timing of their bonuses at all..

  105. Newb says:

to avoid the monthly Total Checking fee (DD $500+ / $1500 min. bal), do i need to satisfy them DURING the month when i opened the account or do i have a grace period? tia!

    • Think there is a two month grace period but can’t remember for sure.

    • Dave says:

Sixty day grace is what the banker told me as well

      • Newb says:

thanks! i forgot that i could also SM them. duhh! interesting that DD can be an ACH credit too! *unlike other banks which explicitly omits ACH transfers and dwell on employer DD.

  108. Pete says:

Helping a family member to open the Chase checking and savings combination — do we need to bring separate checks to fund each account? $1.5k checking and $15k savings, or can Chase accept split one $16.5k check between the two accounts?

    Just another item to consider…..

Accounts opened on May 22 with 25 Checking and May 23 Savings 15,000
Direct deposits for couple months and 300 bonus posted.
Checking account varied during this time from OVER 1,500 to 25 and as of DAY 91 which is today Aug 22, the Checking balance is at 1,424.xx and Savings is over 15,000

So, using the original steps in this posting, I COULD NOT MOVE BALANCES to make Savings 300 and Checking 1,500 as the AVERAGE DAILY BALANCE for checking would have placed a charge of 12.xx fee

Instead, have to wait until Checking Statement Cycle Sep 15 and THEN and ONLY THEN can the balances be brought to 1,500 Checking and 300 Savings without a fee

Also, another twist… as of Day 91 (today) can do nothing without a fee but as of tomorrow, Aug 23, can move 10k and leave 5k into Savings and the “less than 1,500” Checking UNTIL Sep 15.

Original directions from May 22, 2017

  121. Jude says:

    Here’s my DP:

5/15: Opened Total Checking and Chase Savings with $25.00 credit card from USAA. Coded as purchase and not cash advance.
5/16: ACH from Capital One 360 to both checking and savings (amount sufficient to fund bonus requirements)
5/18: Actual work direct deposit of $25 (whoops, now I’ll never know if CapOne counted as DD)
    5/23: $300 new checking bonus
8/15: $200 new savings bonus. Transfer money around so that $1500 is in checking, $300 is in savings, and the rest is in my Ally savings account. Plan to close Chase accounts on 11/15

  123. Luke says:

DP: Connexus FCU ACH counted as DD for Chase Total Checking
    ACH $250 8/15 & 8/16 to trigger fee free.
    Cleared chase 8/16 & 8/17 respectively.
    Bonus posted 8/22

Also posted this on knowledge base DD page, but thought it’d be helpful for this post… not sure if double post is helpful/unnecessary.

  124. SkayDk says:

Posting another data point of account automatically closed by Chase:

Opened checking and savings, received checking bonus and moved everything to savings to keep account fee-free as in:
    – Keep an average daily balance of $5,000 or more in any combination of qualifying Chase checking, savings and other balances

After few month checking account disappeared and CSR says “checking account has been closed due to having a zero balance for more than 60 days.”

But they didn’t clawed back the bonus as it stated in:

“Account Closing: If either the checking or savings account is closed by the customer or Chase within six months after opening, we will deduct the bonus amount for that account at closing.” Citibank

YMMV, but probably make sense to add this warning to the post – so it can be easy shortcut to close the account earlier, or another thing to keep in mind and have at least some funds on checking so it is not closed automatically.

  125. Jack says:

If the transfer into Chase quoted as ACH Credit, will it qualify for the bonus??

  126. Raj says:

When I opened my checking account the banker told me i was pre approved for either a Saphire Preffered, Freedom Unlimited, or Slate card even though I am at 7/24. I was approved on the spot for the Saphire with a 50k point bonus.

  129. Gadget says:

Opened 8/18 in branch; barrage of ACH from Paypal, PNC, and my local credit union posted on 8/30-31.

Continued barrage: TopCashBack, Wells Fargo, Pershing Brokerage are all pending today (9/5), as well as “$300 for New Checking” pending.

I would think of the three posted transactions on 8/30 or 31, one of them did the deed.

Ballistic ACH works; I only go through this much work when changing my DD creates other hassles, but a $300 bonus is high-stakes so I went full force.

Has anyone had the savings bonus clawed back after dropping the balance below $15,000? How quickly does the savings bonus normally post? I see a lot of DPs on checking, but not savings. Thanks!

    • MP says:

I opened the savings account on 5/17. The bonus posted on 8/22. The balance never dropped, though.

The 3rd full statement was released on 9/11, so it’s already safe for me to move the money and leave only $300 in this account.

    • kirk says:

i haven’t gotten mine but it normally posts within 10 days after holding 15k in 90days. seems to be consistent so i’ll just wait for the bonus to posts then empty it out leaving $300.

    Please add that
ACH CREDIT counts towards the direct deposit, as a lot of new-comers were confused.

TD BANK – Send Money – Works toward the 300$ bonus for chase checking
So you dont have to do td bank transfer for 3$ fee.

Chase Rep – also said that if you direct deposit in 500 and then take it out they will charge fee.
    – balance of 0 for 60 will close account.
-monthly fee will overdraw account if balance is 0

Rep said that my td bank doesnt count as a direct deposit, as it was ACH Credit, but i got the 300$, so confused.

Another Rep said that it counts for the 500 monthly fee waive, but they dont know if it counts for direct deposit.

    Weird. reps have different info

  136. Gene says:

    @william charles

  137. Amanda says:

The link to the $500 offer no longer works for me or my friends. Was hoping to print a coupon for my husband last night and couldn’t get it. We did get a $350 coupon, but couldn’t get the $500 offer. Luckily, I followed your advice and got my coupon earlier. Going to Chase this morning to open our accounts on the way to the airport!

  138. Amanda says:

Update: went to the bank and both my husband and I opened new checking and savings accounts and presented one $500 coupon and one $350. But the lady who helped us set up the accounts told me to keep an eye out and if I was able to get the $500 code for my husband to call her. Apparently if you get a new code within 10 days, they can enter it in the computer and you get the better deal. So I tried the link again and it worked. I called the banker and she entered in the new code and confirmed my husband would now get the $500 after meeting the requirements. Sweet!

I made a call to the banker for confirmation. The code was attached.

Well, I guess I have no luck with it. I will set a real direct deposit, and check again two weeks later.
    I’ll update the info later.

      • Ray says:

        Just some update

Since setting a direct deposit is a little bit troublesome for me, I have another try using WF ACH. This time I open the alert function in the Chase APP. If there is any direct deposit in my account, the app will give me a notification. Today I received the message.

I read similar situation in another post. It seems like sometimes WF ACH would not trigger the bonus, so you should activate the alert function in Chase APP and have another try. If the DD message is not show up, maybe you should use other ways.

Now I’m waiting for next Tuesday. If the bonus is not triggered, I will set a real DD. I will update the info on next Tuesday. Hope I have good luck with it.

        • MP says:

WF worked for me. I was getting e-mail notifications about the other deposits, too, and most (if not all) of them were called “direct deposit,” but did not trigger the bonus. It’s strange that at about the same time WF didn’t work for somebody else…

    • Ray says:

      Just an update

10/13(Fri) $20 Fidelity ACH on list
      10/17(Tue) bonus received

I also set up a real DD, however, it’s not transfer money yet.
I think Fidelity ACH still works.

  140. LostOne says:

    9/18 Opened
    9/23 ALLY BANK P2P – $7,500

So Wells Fargo doesn’t seem to be working for me… will need to try some other options!

    • Ray says:

I’m the one who leave a comment above.

Although Wells Fargo ACH triggered the APP’s Direct Deposit alert, I did not see the bonus yet. I think maybe they have already modified the setting. I will set a real direct deposit recently.

    • MP says:

It’s so strange that WF is inconsistent. Mine looked exactly the same. Granted, that was back in early July and things do change, but even then it didn’t work for somebody else.

The time frame was exactly like everybody was saying – the Tuesday after the deposit is posted.

      • Ray says:

Maybe they just change the setting in September.
I think it won’t work in the future.
Hope anybody can provide another recent data point to justify it.

        • MP says:

That’s entirely possible, but the thing is it didn’t work for somebody else at the exact same time it worked for me in July…

  141. anthonyjh21 says:

I churned these once and after opening the second time decided to just keep it open with a small balance. I guess I’m looking to play the long game here and hope that it helps as far as keeping me off the radar with any cc account issues. Plus having an open Chase account has been surprisingly helpful a few times.

Not to mention it’s always half hour round trip plus an hour in branch (all 3 times the wife and I went it was disorganized and a long wait). The opportunity cost of the $200 savings and parking $15k for 3 months was another consideration. I’m not interested in keeping more than a years expenses in cash and I already have $30k in mango/insight and another $30k between two LMCU accounts.

That said, I definitely can understand why people would want to churn these every year indefinitely, it’s just not for me.

    • MP says:

What did the open Chase account help with?

      • anthonyjh21 says:

        – Having a bank account open is usually helpful with new accounts at the same bank

        – They won’t have a record of my churning their bank accounts. I play the INK game pretty hard, don’t need or want more eyes.

        – There’s a lot of ATM’s near me where I can easily deposit cash. Helpful considering my primary bank is an online credit union.

        – Chase quickpay has been convenient

        – Disney debit card gets free pictures and VIP stuff (haven’t used it, but supposedly it does. Obviously I don’t care that much but hey, it is a perk!

        • MP says:

I thought you meant it worked out well as a direct deposit for other bonuses. Hey, Chase got their wish after all! You did develop a relationship with them!:-)

Chase is not a bad bank, as far as banks go. If I were really in the market for switching banks, I’d definitely consider them. I used to have a mortgage with them. Worked like clockwork. So do these accounts really. I wouldn’t have minded at all re-opening them every year, but unfortunately I don’t have a direct deposit from work and the other sources keep drying up…

  142. Someone says:

I can also confirm that Wells Fargo transfer is not working. I transferred $100 and it came on 9/22/2017 (WELLS FARGO IFI DDA TO DDA PPD ID: INTFITRVOS). Two Tuesdays have passed and still there is no bonus.

    • MP says:

That’s a bummer. Could it have something to do with the amount…?! Because legitimate direct deposits are not typically in such amounts. I did something like $186.32, let’s say.

That was my only chance with Chase and I even had to open WF account in order to do it. The story of my life – I always hear about things when it’s already too late… 😉

I just converted my Chase Checking account to a Chase Savings account yesterday (10/7) so I could start churning checking bonuses. The fine print says this is not available to those whose accounts have been closed in the past 90 days but since my account isn’t closed (just product changed) I am wondering if I am able to get the checking bonus.

    • They are churnable yes, some people have reported some bankers giving them issues for opening/closing for multiple years in a row but those reports are very isolated.

      • Jags says:

I was told that they were “cracking down” on the coupons being used year after year and then the banker disappeared for a while before coming back and said she spoke to the manager and that we could open it but she suggests that this be the last time.

Other than that she was perfectly nice.

        • JuicyJosh says:

“last time” this year. Lol. Did it this year for 2nd time and banker asked if I was a couponer. No manager chat but you bet I’ll be in for 2018. It’s so much faster after your first time! In and out in 15 min. Same login and password.

    • James B. says:

My recommendation: Visit a different branch when opening a account for a second time to avoid raising red flags. Also, physical bonus coupons are better than printable bonus coupons. I did use a printable bonus coupon once(from ebay) and it took longer than usual to receive the bonus.

  148. Jonathan says:

Does the DD name have to match the accountholder’s name? ie Can I use my employer DD to fulfill account requirement for spouse’s account?

  149. AB says:

Another confirmation that Wells Fargo is not working.

10/2- sent $50 from WF checking to Chase.

    10/11- no bonus

Going to try again from my WF savings with a different number (e.g., 376.81) and will report back.

  150. Mike says:

Opened the $300 promo Total Checking account yesterday. In the “What We Did Today” summary in the paperwork under the sub-category Direct Deposit was the following:

“No action needed for government direct deposit; your request had been submitted automatically and will begin within 4-8 weeks”.

I neither discussed, initiated nor authorized that government direct deposits would be involved with this account.

  151. Ed says:

My recent experience suggests the days of churning bonuses with CHASE bank accounts might be ending. I was handed a direct deposit authorization form with my employer’s name and my new account number already typed in with the CHASE routing number. The CHASE rep also showed me under DIRECT DEPOSIT on her screen the same info. No need to wait the 180 days keeping the account open if the bonus doesn’t post from other DD sources on one of the next few Tuesday’s.

    • Duke I. says:

Nothing has or is changing except everything is all done electronically even at the branch. Also, Chase stopped giving on the spot debit cards. You now have to wait to receive in mail.

  152. Aaron says:

Wells Fargo, ACH $50, posted on Sep 28 – haven’t received the bonus as of now (10/13). Guess they fixed the loophole

  153. sonia says:

TCB has been 13 days for me and no bonus yet. WF I haven’t tried, but should I?

  154. SlingShot says:

It seems Chase has figured out what triggers a DD other than an employer. I didn’t sign up until late Sept. and I read in their paperwork as of Sept. 26 they can now tell by the coding if a DD is recurring or not. Figures. I have not had any luck with Serve or ACH with 5/3 and Huntington. My last hope is with Robinhood when it is available for withdraw. There was some language that you can make Robinhood a recurring deposit and it is on the list for triggering DD with Chase.I will let readers know if I am successful.

    • Daniel says:

It looks like someone a few comments above you had no luck with Robinhood. Please update with whether or not it works for you.

  155. BW says:

Opened 15K savings for $200 promo. The banker opened the savings that requires $15K minimum instead of $300, now I’ll have to go back to the branch and change it once I get my bonus to get my money out without fees. Just a watch out for others.

  156. Maggie says:

Wellsfargo, ACH $501, IFA DDA To DDA PPD ID, 10/13 transferred; 10/17 no bonus. WF doesn’t work.

  157. RY says:

TopCashback isn’t working for me either. Deposited it on 9/28 and still no bonus.

Is anything besides actual DD working to get the bonus?

  158. Milo says:

Can someone tell me if I close my checking account with Chase when I will be eligible to reopen it again for a bonus? After at least 6 months? I think that’s what I read somewhere. Is that correct? Thank you.

  159. Gerald says:

TCB payout on 9/26 didn’t trigger bonus. ABC gift card payout on 10/11 did.

  160. Laurence says:

I just set up my Chase accounts today, deposited $15K into Savings and $200 into checking

I have three brokerage accounts that I can try for DD – E*Trade, Fidelity & Merrill Lynch

Any reason to think one has a better chance than the others?

And should I wait a day or two before firing the ACH transfer/”DD”?

Any reason to think there’s a minimum amount to trigger the bonus?

  161. sam wc says:

10/3/2017,Chase no longer accepts ACH transfer from Wells Fargo for direct deposit to get the $300 checking bonus. In 9/1/2017, Chase accepted similar ACH transfer from Wells Fargo for direct deposit when my wife received the $300 bonus.

  162. Jags says:

Open Chase Check/Savings on 10/19. Received a letter dated 10/20 that they were ending the banking relationship with me—just the checking and savings account were mentioned in the letter. Accounts will be closed 11/3 and supposedly refusing any transactions after 10/24. I was able to transfer money between accounts.

I will wait out to see if somehow the at least $300 posts next Tuesday since I already made an attempted DD. If so I’ll try to transfer everything out. I already put in the request to pull the $15,000 out, will see if it goes through.

This was my 5th year in a row trying to get this bonus.

    • James B. says:

      Hi Jags,

Did Chase explain why they are ending the banking relationship with you? Too many checking accounts opened and closed? I assume you did not deposit MOs into the Chase accounts?

    • Any idea why the account might have been closed outside it being your fifth year?

      • Jags says:

Lots of accounts opened this year but other than that, no. I put $15k in when I opened the account and simply set up ACH tranfers. The person who opened the account for me said that she saw I opened a lot of accounts and that “they were cracking down on these coupons.” She also went and spoke to the branch manager then came back and said “we can open these accounts this time, but I suggest this be the last.”

Here is the text from the letter:

UPDATE: We will be closing the following account(s) ending in XXXX, XXXX on November 3, 2017.

        Dear Jags,

        • Patti says:

Wow, that really sucks Jags. Sorry to read this. I could deal with them shutting the checking account down but to cut off UR points in 30 days would break my heart.

          • Jags says:

I believe it’s just UR points related to the checking account, not related to my credit cards. I guess I’ll know on 11/3 if my checking/savings accounts disappear but the CCs remain.

I used my CSR today no issues.

        • James B. says:

Hopefully Chase is only closing the checking and savings, and will leave the CCs untouched. From the letter, that is what it looks like.

Thanks for the heads-up and I am sure many will take this closure into consideration.

        • Jim says:

Sorry to hear about this. May I ask if your previous accounts were opened at the same branch?

And if you received this closing letter from Chase corporate, or your branch that just opened your recent accounts?

From your unfortunate experience, it does sound like your local banker was a busy body and instigated things :/

          • Jags says:

No I actually always open accounts at new branches. I try to never go to the same one twice…I just fortunately have about 50 branches within 3 miles of where I live. I do agree, the woman who opened the accounts was definitely playing bonus police.

Just to follow up, even though the letter said funds would be frozen as of 10/24 and accounts closed 11/3, I was able to write a check for $15,xxx out of the checking account on 10/27 and it cleared today 10/31.

I do hope the accounts close on their own on 11/3 I really don’t want to have to deal with going in and closing everything

  163. Calvin says:

    Quick question, thanks in advance.

For example, I already have regular saving, and now I am opening AAA and AAII. If I transfer 20K between those three saving accounts, does it count as qualified deposit?

  164. Daniel says:

    10/14/2017 – Opened Total Checking
10/24/2017 – Withdraw posted from Upwork (hired myself for a $10 job)
10/30/2017 – ACH posted from Fidelity CMA
    10/31/2017 – $300 bonus posted

Not sure if the DD was triggered by Upwork or Fidelity. The Fidelity transfer showed as pending until this morning, so it may have been Upwork that triggered it.

  165. RM says:

Newbie question. If an ACH codes as a CCD, does that mean that it will definitely not count as a direct deposit? Or is that not necessarily determinative?

  166. Jags says:

Even though Chase sent me a letter saying they were going to shut down my checking/savings account on 11/3 they still paid the $300 checking bonus today 10/31.

    • Patti says:

Awesome! I’d grab that bad boy outta there fast. 🙂

    • James B. says:

Good to see that Chase keeps their word on bonus payouts vs. some banks like BMO Harris that are very volatile on their bonus payouts.

Does it look like your Chase credit cards are unscathed by the account closures?

      • Jags says:

Yes CCs look unscathed, but the reality is I’ll probably forfeit the bonus back since their terms state:

Account Closing: If either the checking or savings account is closed by the customer or Chase within six months after opening, we will deduct the bonus amount for that account at closing.

  167. Zy says:

    10/19 Topcashback payout
    10/24 ABC giftcard payout
    10/31 $300 pending

I think ABC worked and Topcashback didn’t.

  168. dave says:

    Topcashback – fail
    10/23 – ACH Fidelity
    10/31 – bonus pending
I also set up DD from my work which should post tonight/early tomorrow but I assume its the Fidelity that triggered it.

  169. Duke I. says:

DP: If you completed a real direct deposit(deposit from employer) you can send a message to Chase online using the bonus tracking number to check the status.

Thank you for contacting us in regards to your Chase
bonus. I understand your concern, and it would be my
pleasure to look into this for you.

You’ve completed the requirements for your $300 cash bonus
reward for your account, and it will be deposited to your
    account on November 7, 2017.

This account must remain open for at least six months,
otherwise you will forfeit the $300 cash bonus.

  170. Redacted says:

    10/24 $72.70 ACH from Fidelity
    10/31 $300 bonus posted

If this hadn’t worked I was going to have my wife switch one of her employers’ DD’s to me for a couple of months. Is there any reason to do that still for “cover”? I guess I’m thinking of the future if I close my account and try for the bonus again in a future year, will it help to not give them one more thing to point at and say “look, he’s gaming the system”. My guess is that the answer is no, but I thought I’d poll for opinions…

  171. Leah says:

    DP –

$15 ACH from WF personal checking triggered the bonus 6 days later
