The Fine Print

  • Offer applies to new customers opening any consumer checking account at BMT.
  • Must be a resident of Pennsylvania, New Jersey or Delaware
  • Limit one promotional offer per household.
  • Initial Opening deposit of $50 or more. Customers must do one of the following  within 90 days of account opening to receive the bank deposit into the account: either (a) make a minimum of 15 debit card purchases; OR (b) sign up for online banking and complete six (6) bill payment transactions; OR (c) receive 2 (two) qualifying direct deposits.
  • A qualifying Direct Deposit is defined as a recurring deposit of a paycheck, pension, Social Security or other regular monthly income electronically deposited by an employer or an outside agency into the checking account.
  • A qualifying debit card purchase is defined as any BMT debit card purchase made at point of sale using your signature or PIN, or a purchase made electronically or online using your BMT debit card number, including recurring payments.
  • The checking account must remain open in order for you to receive the bank deposit, which will be credited to it between 90 to 120 days of account opening, and after all conditions have been met.
  • New customer is defined as not having a BMT deposit account in the past 12 months.
  • Money Market and Savings accounts are not eligible for bank deposit.
  • Current checking account clients or employees of BMT and their family household members, its parents and subsidiaries and affiliated companies are not eligible for bank deposit.  Offer can be withdrawn at any time.  *
  • All bank account bonuses are treated as income/interest and as such you have to pay taxes on them

Avoiding Fees

They offer a free checking account with no monthly fee to worry about as long as you sign up for eStatements. There is no early account termination fee, but the account does need to be open at the time of the bonus posting.

Our Verdict

Very nice bonus with no direct deposit required, it’s also significantly better than it once was as you only need to meet the bonus requirements once rather than for multiple months. This is definitely one of the better checking account bonuses currently available. It also looks like it’s no longer necessary to open in branch making the bonus even better.

Big thanks to reader, Nick who let us know. Please consider sharing bank bonuses with this site so we can make it even better.

    Same deal, updated link:

  2. NBG says:

    No Hard pull.

  3. NBG says:

Just opened the account in branch. They have this advertised in bank also. No hard pull. Min $50 to open. All checks deposited within first month have a 7 day hold – this is per the banker. Not sure if it is true.

  4. NBG says:

Can you update the post to say there is no monthly fee for this offer?. The free checking account only has a requirement to sign up online and have estatements. Basically this looks like a easy free money in 60-90 days.

More details on footer of this link page –

  5. NBG says:

One more- even though it says to schedule a call, if one stops by the bank – there is lot of flyers on the desk.

  6. Frito Pendejo says:

Anyone know if they are CHEX sensitive? I finally started getting denials on new accounts I assume because I’ve opened so many lately. I don’t see BMT on the DoC Chex-sensitivity page /banks-credit-unions-chexsystems-inquiry-sensitive/

    • NBG says:

I opened 10+ accounts in last 2 months. BMT in branch doesn’t seemed to be Chex sensitive. They do check something, but mostly for any -ve balance on account. This is per the person at the bank.

  7. MarcoPolo says:

Do we have DPs on DD?

    • I would just do the debit card transactions though, why bother with direct deposit?

      • MarcoPolo says:

        Thanks @William
Didn’t realize that I only have to complete ONE of the three requirements.
This makes it a whole lot easier.
It’s a shame that it’s one promotion per household and not per person.
        Keep up the good work.
        Much appreciated.

        • No problem, any way i could make this clearer in terms of only one required (serious question, not trying to be rude).

          • MarcoPolo says:

            Thanks William.
I don’t think you can make it any clearer than it already is in the OP.
It was my mistake as I did not read it properly 🙂

However, it won’t hurt to add an or after each of the requirements like this:
            * make a minimum of 15 debit card purchases OR
            * Sign up for online banking and complete six (6) bill payment transactions OR
            * Receive 2 (two) qualifying direct deposits

  8. BHanna says:

May be a dumb question, but why is this listed as DE & PA only?? I put in a VA zip, and it said “A representative will be in touch shortly…”

    – Fine print does not specify state limitation, and
    – No zip code lockout on the “schedule a call form”
    – Has anyone tried from another state and failed?

  9. Danielle says:

I got a call back and was told the bonus applies for opening online as well. The CSR said the signature card and paperwork will be mailed for me to fill out, and that I qualify as a Maryland resident.

    • Danielle says:

Well…got a message that I’m outside their trade area when trying to open online. Called back and was told I can apply in-branch and still get the bonus.

    • MarcoPolo says:

Didn’t know that you can apply online.
      Is there a link?

      • Danielle says:

I followed the link in this post, then personal banking, then checking if your zip code is allowed.

        • MarcoPolo says:

          Thanks @Danielle
Since there is no mention of the bonus on the online application and I don’t want to take a chance I’ll apply in branch.

  10. MarcoPolo says:

I walked into my local BMT and there were no promotional flyers on the desk or anywhere.
Had to ask for the promotion and was able to open the free checking without any problems.
No appointment was needed and I was given the account number and the T&C of the promotion.
Be aware that if you do not opt for online banking AND eStatements then your account will be converted to another type of account which has a minimum balance requirement of $100.
Also Debit card transaction can be signature based or PIN based to qualify for the bonus.

  11. Harv says:

At first glance, this bank appears to be mostly in the Philly area, but I looked over their list of branches and found one only a half hours drive from me. I stopped by and opened a free checking account and then went home and signed up for online banking and e-statements. Will receive $200 bonus in 90 to 120 days after making 15 debit card transactions in 90 days.

  12. Danielle says:

I asked the rep and they don’t pull Chex or EWS, but something called Overlook? Over-something. Should have written it down.

  13. Noah says:

Opened an account in about 20 minutes with a banker. He mentioned that he personally checks every Friday to see if any accounts he’s opened have completed the bonus requirements. If they have he said he manually adds the $200.

  14. NBG says:

Just a FYI – i did 15 amazon reloads of ~50c across 3 days. I was at the bank for other reason and the person who opened the account said to do atleast $5 debit transactions. She said they might not count the under $1 ones. It was not a issue for me as i have DD setup anyway.

  15. Wendy Wang says:

I was told by the banker who opened my account that this promotion ends on April 30th, 2017

  16. NBG says:

Anyone received the bonus successfully yet?.

  17. NBG says:

Had to call the branch and they verified and manually posted the bonus (post 90 days).

  18. PointsRich says:

    Offer is back, expires 10/31

  19. Frito Pendejo says:

I got the bonus on this. I had to call a handful of times to actually get them to apply it, though. It’s all manual.

  20. MarcoPolo says:

When I click on the link it takes me to the page which says “Open Now”
    Is this available online now?
I already receive my bonus so unfortunately I can’t do it for my DW since it is one per household.

  21. john firth says:

Why does it seem like you can open online? Looks like the promo is attached to the app as well..

  22. Skippy says:

Looks like you left this first sentence in by mistake:

“Looks like this offer has now unfortunately expired. You can view more checking bonuses here.”

The link is working, so I guess you just had that comment in there from when the previous offer expired.

  23. Jason says:

Attempted to open account online, but my zip code (15 miles away from their closest branch) was outside their eligible area. So, i drove the branch, and they set it up in person; no address limits in-branch.

$200 pay out NO SOONER than 90 days after the opening date, even if requirements met within first week.

  24. Jay says:

So to be clear after I get the bonus I can close it instantly?

  25. NBG says:

Was a easy 20 min process in branch to open an account for my SO. They even said i could open one and get the bonus if i had closed more than 6 months back (mine was 2 months back).

  26. Rezz says:

Anyone have a DP on ChexSystems?

    • NBG says:

I don’t know if they even use. My SO had opened 10 new accounts this year and not a question. They were happy to open a new account.

    • MarcoPolo says:

Not a problem. I opened one few months ago in branch after having opened over 15 accounts this year.

  27. Dizzy says:

Hmm…id verification failed which was a first for me. Moving to Philly next month will try in person. Was ok with my NJ id fwiw. It even says NJ, DE, PA applicants are ok just so you add it above.

  28. Re-iterating what user Dizzy said above –

Terms state that “Must be a resident of Pennsylvania, New Jersey or Delaware”.
We can add “NJ” to the list of officially allowed states.

  29. Elena says:

Opened the account in branch today without any problems (had opened 11 accounts in last 4 months). Easy process, no appointment was needed. Was told that I should receive a debit card in 7-10 business days. I was also told that my SO can open an account as well, but the paperwork I got states that it’s “one gift per household/primary address”. Also “we will review your account 90 days after your opening date .. if you met the criteria, we will credit your account between 90-120 days of account opening”.

  30. lzhu says:

Has anyone successfully applied online? The system does not take my zip code in NJ. Closest branch is 1 hour away. Tempted to just use a random eligible zip code to apply.

  31. daniel says:

Just tried to open an account online. Didn’t get passed the first step (zip code eligibility) my zip code is 07458 which is northern NJ and it said I was not eligible…

  32. Max says:

I called them, they stated if you live in NJ, you will need to come into the branch for the promotion, however will be eligible provided you actually go to the branch. It cannot be done online for NJ residents

  33. joe says:

Currently the information you have entered for eligibility is outside our trade area. If you have any questions or believe we have reached this decision in error, please contact us at 610-525-1700 or via email at

Looks like not all of NJ is eligible

  34. MarcoPolo says:

People having problem with zip code try this link:

    • Bill says:

Same Error after the first step.

      “Eligibility Qualification

Thank you for your interest in BMT.

  35. Dan says:

I live in NJ but stopped in a Philly branch. Easy approval. They didn’t mention CHEX systems.

  36. Patti says:

I live in NJ, around 10 miles east of the Liberty Bell and I also got the error that I’m outside their trade area. Maybe NJ folks further south, closer to Delaware County, PA, will have better luck.

Darn, and I was so happy to find a new one that is so easy to meet the requirements.

  37. Lisa says:

FWIW, I live in Philly and was able to open online

    • dizzy says:

Lucky. I live in Philly and have not been able to open online.

      • KP says:

Yeah, that’s odd. I live in Philly and was able to open online. I funded $25.00 instead of $50.00 and a rep actually called me and told me I would need to send another check back along with the signature card and page where you select which of the three requirements you want to do.

  38. zap says:

Just opened in branch, but was told in person that the promo has been extended to next Fri (Nov 3) since BMTC wants to avoid a last-min rush next Tues 10/31.

  39. Dizzy says:

Easiest in-brach app yet, walked right in and was out in 10 minutes. Rep said last Saturday was crazy, he said offer expired tomoorw tho (maybe different per branch? This was on City Line) Bonus points for the bus dropping you off literally 15 feet in front of the doors. My 6th account in 2 weeks guess they’re not chex sensitive (WF biz, Citadel, Disc savings x 3)
