Avoiding Fees

The monthly fees will vary slightly based on what state your living in. We suggest checking this before choosing your account. Most people will be best off going for the Bright Banking account and then using one of the fee waivers, unless you’re a student or senior in which case those accounts will be the best option.

BB&T Bright Banking® $10 monthly

You can avoid the monthly fee on this account if you meet any of the following requirements:

  • Receive $500 or more in direct deposits
  • Have an average monthly balance of $1,500 or more
  • Have $6,000 or more in combined deposits in checking, savings, Money Rate Savings, Investor’s Deposit Accounts
  • Have an outstanding personal mortgage with BB&T

BB&T Fundamentals Checking $5 monthly

It’s not possible to get this monthly fee waived.

BB&T Identity Protection® Checking $6 monthly

It’s not possible to get this monthly fee waived. If you want free identity theft insurance we suggest looking at Credit Sesame (also gives you access to a free FAKO credit score).

BB&T Student Banking $0 monthly

This account does not have a monthly charge if you choose to receive paperless statements. If you choose to receive paper statements you’ll need to pay a monthly fee of $3. You must be under 23 and a student to be eligible for this account.

Senior Checking $8 Monthly

You can avoid the monthly fee on this account if you meet any of the following requirements:

  • Receive $500 or more in direct deposits
  • Have an average monthly balance of $1,000 or more
  • Have $6,000 or more in combined deposits in checking, savings, Money Rate Savings, Investor’s Deposit Accounts
  • Have an outstanding personal mortgage with BB&T

Elite Gold $30 Monthly

You can avoid the monthly fee on this account if you meet any of the following requirements:

  • $25,000 combined deposit balance in checking, savings, CDs, IRAs, Money Rate Savings, Investor’s Deposit Account, or investments through BB&T Investment Services, Inc.
  • $25,000 combined outstanding balance in retail loans and lines of credit3
  • $150,000 BB&T personal mortgage loan balance

Early Account Termination Fee $25

All accounts come with a $25 early account closure fee if you close them within 180 days of account opening.

Our Verdict

They have offered bonuses of $125 and $150 in the past (smaller footprint). The upside to this bonus is that you can receive at least most of it without needing a direct deposit and you can fund up to $1,500 with a credit card. The downside is that it’s only for a maximum of $100 and I’m not sure how difficult the direct deposit or redeeming the deal will be. Until we have a bit more information I’m not going to add it to our list of recommended bank bonuses.

  1. mmgfarb says:

Since the T&C’s say “one per household” I could technically open one account in OH and one in MD and get the bonus on both even though they would both be opened by me, correct?

  2. Andrew says:

Different states have different checking account options. For example, PA (where I am) has a ‘Back to Basics’ checking option with no monthly fee that qualifies for the bonus.

  3. John says:

DP: Citi Hilton credit card cannot be used to fund the account

  4. JP says:

I thought BB&T was a hard credit pull.

    • Jeff says:

I know in 2014 it wasn’t a hard pull when I opened a BB&T checking account in VA. But, I have seen at least one person on this site that said BB&T was a hard pull since then. I have to wonder if they opted for the overdraft protection. I imagine someone on here will jump on this bonus and post the result.

  5. mrredskin says:

i used citi hhonors reserve with $0 cash advance limit to fund the $1500

  6. Alfred says:

Doc, BB&T has lots of presence in GA. not sure why it is not listed as eligible state?

  7. Dave says:

Does anyone have any data points of being able to fund with an Amex card? Specifically the business reward gold?

  8. Jay says:

Opened and successfully funded as purchase 1.5k w/ CSR, entire process took fewer than 5 minutes…

No hard pulls on TU and EQ at least, and I won’t be able to check EX until a couple of weeks later.

  9. diomaiuti says:

I applied for the Bright Banking option in MD and was not given the choice of funding the account with a CC. Only ACH from another bank, debit card, check, or in-person deposit at a branch. 8-(

  10. Benjamin says:

It is a hard pull in NJ…Called their rep…

  11. allmail says:

Is it safe to fund it with Citi Double Cash?

  12. Jay says:

Crap, I just realized that the BB&T Deals portion of the bonus requires a debit card, which was one of the features that I removed when I applied for the account…

Guess I’ll have to call them up lol

  13. Jay says:

Looking at the wording of the description in the BB&T Deals section, it looks like deals will not be populated at all until you put some spend on the debit card, at which point you might get some targeted deals. Also, “The more you shop, the more cash back deals we’ll send you.”

Doesn’t really sound like it’s worth $25 minus tax anymore, since I doubt tiny Amazon GC payments would trigger the appearance of any deals.

  14. Sam says:

Opened checking and Saving account online and Funded $1500 in each account using Chase Sapphire Preferred. Got an error for the first attempt. Called Chase to resolve it and placed a large purchase note on my account for the upcoming BB&T purchase. Tried again a day later and account funded successfully.

  15. dan says:

not able to fund a savings acct with CC anymore; visa & mc option is there, but msg stated that can’t validate the funding info

also, on the dd, can or will a bank xfer work? or has to be a real DD? Thx

    • dan says:

nvm about the CC funding, called US bank Flexperks to learn that BB&T ran it as cash while my limit is below $1500. was anyone able to fund with the Flexperks Visa before?

  16. AJ says:

Just funded a U by BB&T Checking account via CSR. The transaction is currently pending.

Heads up to those looking to fund both a checking and savings account via CC, the max funding amount for me was $1,500 at a time. I had to wait for my session to expire (it warns you after a good bit) and hit “End Session” because I tried to fund both Checking and eSavings accounts at one time.

tl;dr Fund the checking account and go completely through the new account process. Then, once you have the checking account and a BB&T username + password, apply for the eSavings account separately if you’re looking to fund with more than $1,500 across all accounts.

  17. Gadget says:

Doc, The expiration date has been updated to Dec 30th, 2016. 🙁 I have been monitoring this one and hoping they would get a new promotion going and not extend this one.

  18. Gadget says:

DP= CC Funding: Unlike someone reported, CC funding DOES work today. Was able to fund $1500 by credit card by selecting “debit” when opening a Bright Banking checking, and used my BOA Merrill Signature + Visa card to fund (I previously reduced my Merrill CA limit to lowest amount available = $200, to avoid any chance of CA fees). $1500 account opening went through and currently shows as “pending” on the BOA CC login, but I do not have BB&T login yet to see what it says. Waiting on final approval from BB&T tomorrow, I hope, to get account access. I will post the result if anything changes.

DP= NOT a Hard Pull: Not a hard pull from what I can tell so far, although they seem very persistent to push overdraft protection during signup, and they will e-mail you after signup is complete to add more pressure. I would ASSUME people people reporting hard pulls are falling trap to a few check blocks that have persuasive wording, warning that overdraft protection is recommended. Local branch is in VA, less than 5 miles away – I applied online. 12+ ChexSystems inquires this year, so keeping my fingers crossed.

    • Gadget says:

I was able to login to BB&T for the first time to see an administrative hold on my CC Funding amount. I am not sure if that is standard practice, or maybe they are canx’ing my deposit. TBD… I will post result. Hoping for the best, and maybe I am paranoid.

      • Gadget says:

DP update: CC funding of $1500 for account opening by selecting debit did process after a few days. Checking Open date: 12/13, and posted as purchase to BOA Merrill Signature + Visa on 12/16. BB&T had released the administrative hold on 12/15 or 12/16.

DP update: Soft pull. Online application, no hard pull still, in VA, nearest branch 2 miles away. I know they pulled my EWS (got an alert), and probably my Chex. They are just very persistent about getting overdraft protection during signup, emailed me twice now about adding it, and I think some people may stumbled on the cleverly worded check blocks to avoid the HP. Or the HP policy may change depending on the state?

        • Thanks, I suspect the overdraft protection is the reason somebody got a hard pull.

          • Gadget says:

They really push overdraft protection hard. Got my 3rd notification, this time via snail mail, inside a post card that you would think was a PIN number; instead it’s all about overdraft protection. It says “This notice confirms that I requested BB&T not to consider authorizing and paying overdrafts” and I “have the right to revoke this choice at any time”. Thanks, but no thanks, BB&T.

  19. Traveler says:

I opened up a checking account online using Fidelity Amex for funding, and then 4 days later opened the savings account online using the same funding card. Funded each account with $1500. Both went thru no problem and I have already received $60 cash back for funding the 2 accounts from Fidelity. If I only take advantage of 3 of BB&T bonus options, totaling $75, I will have received more cash than I ever did opening up a BB&T acct before ($135 vs. $125). Not sure when BB&T will credit the bonus cash after completing each deal?

    • Don says:

Fidelity Amex? I didn’t think those existed anymore. Did you mean the Fidelity Visa, or do you really still have the Amex version?

  20. Jay says:

    DD DP:

PayPal transfers do NOT count as a DD. Tried to use it to waive the monthly maintenance fee and failed.

  21. kp says:

    anyone get their bonus yet?

    • Diomaiuti says:

Not I. Opened accts ($1500 to each of checking/savings from Fidelity Visa) on 9/15.

Somewhere in the fine print it says something about accts being reviewed for eligibility for each $25 between 90 and 120 days after opening, I think. That means they may have seen my 4 qualifying activities as early as mid-December or will see them by mid-January. No idea of processing time after that, but there’s an ETF for closing at <180 days, so I'm in no hurry.

  22. Diomaiuti says:

Oh, BTW, I use Quicken to keep track of these things and so as soon as I had online access, I set up a connection to download transactions from BB&T. Nowhere did I see the notification that they wold charge me $7.95/month for using the software. Currently trying to argue them into reversing the fee (Oddly, this fee only appeared in December, after several months of using Quicken.) Quicken users beware!

  23. ML says:

Tried opening a Student Checking account using Chase Sapphire Preferred for $1,500. Kept getting an error message, turns out Chase flagged it for fraud but took a few minutes to text me. Don’t try again if it gives you an error message the first time, they don’t let you do anything other than mail in a check if you try more than 3 times.

    • ML says:

Update – exited the application and went through the account set up process again (first account was not opened due to no deposit being made). Was able to fund $1,500 on CSP. It’s showing up as a pending charge on Chase, not sure if it will post as sale or CA yet. I got a text from Chase saying to call customer service ASAP about activity on my account right after the transaction went through. BB&T is showing an administrative hold for the amount, hoping that clears up in a few days.

  24. tk says:

I met the terms for each bonus by end of October but nothing has shown. Has anyone gotten the bonus yet? If so, what were the data points? I opened account in mid October. Thanks

    • Gadget says:

T&C says “120 days from opening”. You have a long ways to go! Generally banks don’t post them to far in advance, but not usually the last day either. They would rather not answer the phone.

  25. Gadget says:

For the “Redeem a Deal”, I only used my card at two places; McDonalds & at Walmart Neighborhood Market for like $3 each. A few days later a deal popped up to get 10% off at Zoes Kitchen restaurant within the next 35 days. Looks a lot like an AMEX deal, except you don’t apply it to the card, and it is already attached. I guess I will be trying it out! There is such a thing as a free lunch! (Albeit, 2 months later I will get my cash back)

I am having an issue getting signed up for Personal Payments (PopMoney) to try for the “Pay a Friend”. It would not allow me past the entering of my mobile phone number. At that point I am supposed to get a TM, but I get nothing. Called CSR today, created a ticket, and they are going to “reset my online profile” and call me back to get logged in. Looks like I am not getting that call back until Monday…

    • Gadget says:

Correction: You do have to click “Add to card” to get the deal attached to the debit card – I guess I don’t recall doing that. Just had a new one show up for Five Guys Burgers… yum.

Update: Finally got BB&T to enable my PopMoney account. Took a week and a couple calls. This was the first time I have used PopMoney ever, and I can see why nobody mentions it for P2P payments. It’s very slow – transfer took over a week, but instantly pulls the money from the sender.

  26. dan says:

got the bonus on the 18th, exactly 120 days after the acct was open; now to avoid the early acct closing of $25, must wait til march or 180 days after!

  27. Gadget says:

DP: Opened “e-savings” account online within BB&T login, just over 1 month after checking. CC funding – to CSP $1500. Posted instantly as purchase.

  28. An says:

it seems the online max allowed is $250. trying to fund through csr for $1500 and got the message.

    • dan says:

They must have just changed to a lower $250

    • Gadget says:

Was working in January. Sorry if I broke the deal. Maybe it varies by state? VA here. I was considering signing up SO mainly for the CC spend, and both getting the $50 referral bonus… maybe I will reconsider. I seem to recall selecting “DEBIT card” bubble, but filling in credit card info, if that helps anyone.

  29. An says:

Yes I confirmed with rep. debit card $1500 and credit card $250..

  30. Jay says:

Not sure how, but I just noticed that the bonus for three of the four features somehow posted twice, for a total of $175 instead of $100! Not complaining of course, but it’s mysterious how they managed to do that lol.

  31. Pete says:

Same for me but the debit card bonus of $25 took 4 to 5 months at least to post.

  32. Gadget says:

DP: Got the full $100 bonus exactly 118 days after opening, even though many of my requirements were done months ago. (terms said to expect payout 120 days from opening) I was not one of the lucky ones above who got paid twice. Says: Description: ANRAF OnLine Offer BONUS PAYMENT

For those who got paid twice, did you contact the bank as soon as you completed you requirements to get paid? Maybe someone manually applied the bonus, and the automated version still kicked in at the 120 day mark? Also strange that mine came in lump sum for all 4 chunks, but the P2P bonus was separate on the capture.

  33. MarcoPolo says:

Any more DPs on CC funding limits?
I am really finding it hard to MS my recently acquired Merrill and Chase SW RR cards.
I have already exhausted the PNC and Huntington options.
Any other bank accounts which can be easily funded with CC in PA ?
    TIA 🙂
