Avoiding Fees

This account has no monthly maintenance fees. According to the comments there is a $30 early account termination fee if closed within 180 days.

Our Verdict

Now that we know it’s a soft pull to open and you can’t fund with a credit card, I’ve added it to our best bank bonus page as I think it’s a good offer. The requirements are a bit tricky but at least you can get some of the bonus without the direct deposit requirement and that’s always a plus.

    no CC funding. Transfer only

  2. EO says:

Based on the fee schedule, there is a $30 fee for closing the account within 180 days of opening.

  3. Dave says:

Closeout of Account within 180 Days of Opening: $30.00
Any other fees that I can post for you guys?

    Who are the datapoint gods?

  5. Matt K. says:

Will, did you finally cave to allow clicking link opens a new tab?! 🙂

  6. Laura says:

Does “debit card point of sale transaction” mean it it has to be in person (i.e. Can’t be an online transaction?)

    • Grant says:

I think that means that the transaction has to be run as a credit card charge, not a debit card charge (with PIN). Most online purchases count as a credit card charge.

    • Gadget says:

Good question… From what I have seen, most banks that request new users to use their debit want to see “signature-based” debit card transactions where you press “CREDIT” at the register. This bank appears to want PIN-based transactions, where you press “DEBIT” (which makes more sense since there are less fees involved for the bank). Since you can’t enter a PIN for online or phone transactions, those are considered signature-based, from my understanding.

A POS transaction is a point-of-sale transaction: generally a purchase you make at a retailer with your debit card. To complete your purchase, you usually enter your PIN instead of signing for the purchase. Ref: thebalance.com/pos-fees-definition-point-of-sale-fees-315345

  7. Curmudgeon says:

    Link not working currently.

I’ll take the risk of a hard pull hit for this – I’ve already got 19 or 20 inquiries this year, what’s one more? 🙂

Fine print in terms says bonus should appear in account within 10 days of qualifying activity, so I’ll try doing Amazon card reloads for $10 each to see if that meets the requirement. If not, I’ll just buy a bunch of $10 Amazon cards at the grocery store to meet it.

If they pull Experian my monitoring service will let me know and I can update here.

Of course, all this depends on the link coming back up.

    • Link loading fine for me?

      • Curmudgeon says:

Link now works for me. Completed app. At the end you have to print, fill out and sign a signature card and mail it in. Part of the page reads:

        ————-
By completing and signing this Signature Card you certify that the information provided is true and accurate. You also authorize the Bank to verify your identification and/or obtain information about you from consumer reporting agencies. The opening of a deposit account is contingent upon review of your consumer report and our ability to adequately verify your identity.
        ————–

Whether or not this becomes a hard or soft pull, or just ChexSystems is unknown currently, but I’ll update if I see anything pop up.

I funded by putting in my info for an ACH pull. No option to fund with a credit card given.

    • Todd says:

Can you tell me a little more about these Amazon card reloads?

What is the purpose/what are you accomplishing?

      Thank you for your time!

      • eclipsor says:

they meet this requirement for the bonus: “Receive $50 for completing 6 debit card point of sale transactions of $10 or more”

  8. milesjjcc says:

  12. Ian says:

The wording of their terms is awkward: “Not for residents of AZ, FL, NY, NJ or OH who are not current My Banking Direct customers”. Does that mean the offer is OK if I’m a resident of FL who is a current MyBankingDirect customer! Or, did they mean the offer is ok if I’m a resident of FL and not a customer? Or, is the offer not good for any resident of AZ, FL, NY NJ, or OH? (All have at least 1 branch of the New York Community Bank).

    • Eric says:

That’s a great point. If you read it literally it means that if we live in those states and are currently a customer we are eligible which doesn’t make much sense. I’m probably going to email them to get a clarification.

  13. S says:

Can you open individual accounts one for own and one for spouse if mailing address is same? Anyone with exp. in getting both bonuses?

  15. Lingua says:

also, the 1.5k is minimum to open, then apparently we can pull it? language isn’t clear about keeping it in while meeting reqs.

  17. tinker25 says:

The online application process did not ask any ID verification questions, it flashed for an instant about ID verify, but went right in to next step without actually asking any. The ending of App displayed what Julie posted above.

Are you guys experienced the same or have you actually answered ID verify questions during the application?

    • Laura says:

Don’t remember answering any. I think.

      • anne says:

I did have to go through the ID questions and I could not answer one of those immediately. It asked me which of the following streets is closest to my home address. I had no idea and had to google it and made a best guess! Finally they asked me to mail a copy of driver license and utility bill. This was on Dec. 13 and today I just got the following email:

        “Dear Anne
        Welcome to My Banking Direct.
Thank you for applying for our My Banking Direct Checking. Please keep the following account application ID for future reference: xxxxxx.
Over the next two business days, we will submit two trial deposits and one withdrawal to your Discover Bank account ending in xxxx. Once these transactions post to your account, please confirm the two trial deposit amounts by replying to this email. Upon verification we will complete the account opening process.
We look forward to serving you as a MyBankingDirect customer. Thank you for banking with us.”

So the email I got is different from what people have been getting here.

    • Tomtoo says:

I had the same experience as tinker25 about the ID verification page flashing, but the application process wouldn’t let me complete at the end until myself and a CSR figured out a way to get the questions to show (explained below in a different reply).

  18. john mccann says:

Once each condition is met then they give you the bonuses. So,a direct deposit is required. That’s the way I read it. Anyone speak to a customer rep?

  19. mpcee123 says:

The fee schedule is a helpful doc:

    https://apps.mybankingdirect.com/enroll/application/disclosures/MyNYCB%20Schedule%20of%20Fees.pdf

Notice how Point-of-Sale debit transactions are $1.50 each.

Therefore, make sure to do Point-of-Sale credit transactions to meet the $50 bonus (if you choose to pursue it).

  20. Dave says:

Darv – where are you seeing that it won’t count?

    • Darv says:

I will check the secure message I got. Will post here. According to my inquiry, only debit transactions count and even then, may trigger fee. I’ll post exact language tomorrow.

    • Darv says:

“Please be advised that “point of sale” transactions are when a PIN is entered. The transactions where a PIN is entered are the ones that will count to receive the $50.00.”

“Yes, pinless transactions are also considered Point of Sale transactions. Please be advised that any time you use your pin # at a store to make a purchase you will be assessed a $1.50 fee. It is stated on our Schedule of Fees. Also, it has come to our attention from other customers that when they shop at a store, the machine gives them two options: Visa Debit or US Debit. Please always select Visa Debit, this will avoid the $1.50 fee. I hope this information helps.”

This information is from their customer service. Hope this clarifies.

      • Gadget says:

Correct me if i am wrong, and I only use debit cards when required, but there is conflicting info here. Per your CSR, “any time you use your pin # at a store to make a purchase you will be assessed a $1.50 fee” OK, so, don’t do that. But I need POS PIN transactions to get the $50, per the first CSR comment at the top.

Anyway, per the fee schedule, note #2, POS debit charges are not charged to MyBankingDirect checking” customers. (I e-mailed PDF of fee schedule to Doc for a sanity check)

But, then your CSR goes on to say “shop at a store, the machine gives them two options: Visa Debit or US Debit. Please always select Visa Debit, this will avoid the $1.50 fee.” Well, when I have used a debit card, it always says “credit” or “debit”, not Visa debit or US debit. I think they have outsourced the online CSR jobs to outside of the US, and they are just reading from their manual. That’s my impression, partly because “it has come to our attention” and the different wording from what our debit/CC terminals say for the prompt.

When I do finally get my card, I will be sure just to try a debit swipe, use the PIN, and then see what happens. I can’t recall the last bank fee I actually paid or didn’t get removed after calling, so this will be a first. Banks do not want to lose a customer over a silly couple dollar fee. All other bank promotions I have done that required debit transactions wanted you to push credit, and I am leaning toward doing those first, and might do 6 debit too. Then they can’t have any excuses not to pay the bonus and I can stop wondering. Worst case, paying $9 in fees is better than leaving $41 on the table.

        • Darv says:

Yeah we’ll see. I’m not sure it’s worth the hassle. My interpretation of what they say is that the transactions must be debit and must be “Visa Debit” to avoid fees. Best case for me is that I net $41 like you said, and I’d probably do the PINless transactions with somebody like Amazon. I don’t think I will do six swipes offline. Worst case, somehow these get coded wrong and I don’t get the bonus. I’ve had checking promos in the past where the transactions get coded wrong and there’s no rhyme or reason…which is why I probed quite a bit with these folks. Bottom line, probably not worth the hassle. I’ll give it more thought. For one thing, still waiting on the debit card to arrive.

  21. Gadget says:

I signed up for this promo and can now speak from experience…

    – They hold your money for new accounts for a long time. I applied for the account on 12/21/16, and deposited a $40 check via their phone app on 12/23/16. I got a letter in the mail stating those funds will not be available until 1/9/17 because I am a “new customer”. I was hoping to use this to get going on the bill pays, or debit transactions, once the card arrived.

    – They hold your opening deposit a long time as well. They processed that fairly large $1500 deposit on 12/28/16, the account stayed at a $0 available balance, and today is the 1st day I have had an available balance, on 1/3/17, BUT ONLY $400. If someone is not able to go a long time without access to their money, they could find themselves in a bind with this bank.

    – They aren’t quick about sending the debit card. Per the letter they sent me on 12/23/16, it takes 10 business days from the date your account was opened and FUNDED. That adds another week based on my experience, so the account will have been open almost a month before I get a debit card – cutting into the deadline to get my debits done.

    – Doc, I have a correction for you. Per the fee schedule, it does say it is $1.50 for each POS debit transaction, BUT the note 2 of the document states “2 Waived for My Banking Direct Checking.” (Not sure how you could do a debit transaction without a checking acct? MM or savings acct maybe?) POS credit transactions are free. I can provide a screenshot or PDF copy upon request.

    – I am still undecided whether they want you to press “credit” or “debit” to meet the requirements of the bonus, so I will call them to find out ONCE I actually get the debit card.

    – Save yourself 50 cents. They do send you a signature card and stamped envelope with the welcome letter, for those that disobey the directions to mail back the signature card immediately upon online approval.

    – The bonuses are supposed to post within 10 business days of the requirements being met, which is faster than most – hopefully that pans out ok in the end, because this bank is more of a hassle than I am used to.

Best of luck to all those that try this one.

    • Thanks Gadget, awesome comment and it’s stuff like this that makes me love our readers! 🙂 🙂 🙂

    • Darv says:

Actually their online service has been great so far. I asked pointed questions in the debit card promotion but they were prompt and clear in replies. They held my initial deposit, $1500, for maybe a week but I didn’t think that unreasonable. They should have the debit card to me by now and that’s not good, but otherwise they’ve been straight with me. The debit card promotion is strange from how they explained it to me. I’ll grab those details tomorrow.

      • Gadget says:

But it takes them a week from the time you submit your application until you can verify the trial deposits, then they pull the money from your other bank “funding” account. (Most banks don’t do trial deposits for bank account opening from what I have seen, and give you time to get the money in there by your desired method – or, instead do instant debit or credit card funding) That means you already had the money idle for a week waiting on them to setup the account, they hold it for another week after pulling it, and still not give you the full amount as available. I am not sweating it too much, other than it’s annoying, but some may find that unacceptable. I think it’s excessive, but it is around the holidays, so things are going to move slower. Not as bad as the HSBC fiasco that took 3 weeks to get opened.

As for your debit card, should be there 10 business days after funding date, per the welcome letter.

        • Darv says:

So far not the best overall experience but definitely had worse. Far worse. As much as anything, I appreciate that they’ve been transparent with me and responsive when asking questions through secure messaging. I mean articulate and clear responses. That’s seldom the case from my experience.

    • Gadget says:

Update: Full opening deposit now showing as available (1/4/17). So, it took one full week exactly from the date they pulled the money from my bank(12/28).

    • Tomtoo says:

I signed and mailed back my signature card the same day as my online approval. A week or so later I got another blank signature card in the mail with instructions to sign it, and to send a photocopy of my driver license. I sent that almost a week ago. At least they haven’t pulled my initial deposit funds in yet. I wouldn’t be too happy about that since I don’t have an account number or online access at this point.

Was on the phone with them once because my Chrome browser was not showing the ID questions page and they were super helpful and stayed on the phone with me until we could get the problem worked out. (Had to finally go to IE browser for that, much to my chagrin.)

  22. Darv says:

Well the intrigue continues with this promotion. Just got my debit card. Added it to Amazon. No option available to opt out of PINless transactions, only wanted that to make sure the card was in fact being treated as a debit card. Proceeded anyhow, but transaction was declined by the bank.

Anybody have thoughts to maximize this part of the promotion? Looks like Amazon is out. I was thinking perhaps buying gift cards at Target actually entering a PIN.

    • Gmoney says:

Same issue with Amazon. Tried making a payment to Comcast as well, and it wouldn’t go through. Called the bank, and they said nothing was sent through to be declined, so they weren’t helpful. Pretty crappy debit card if you can’t use it online. I may try in person somewhere but don’t know if it’s worth the hassle.

  23. Superchurn says:

Darv you could find a Kroger and buy 10x$10 money orders using the PIN in one visit. It would cost $7.90 in fees but would fairly easily net $42.10 in profits with minimal

  24. Dave says:

Has anyone received an email asking to “reply” if you’d like a debit card and checks?
This email includes the email address of dozens of customers. Not happy to see
    my info shared like this!

  25. Darv says:

Anyone have success using their new debit card online, for any transaction? I tried twice with Amazon and both times rejected. Secure messaged the bank, they don’t see a problem.

    • lingua says:

I’ve had my new card be declined at Amazon, a restaurant, and a grocery store, big pain… Accepted only at a gas station where I’ll be doing my POS transactions form now on. I’m in CA.

  26. Ferris says:

Anyone have any info on what banks might count as a DD?

    • Gadget says:

Trying push from Discover & local CU. Online Desc. says Discover P2P, CU says ACH, but no way to know if it is triggered; both show up as Type “ACH deposit”. Per terms, payout takes “10 business days from meet req’s” so it will be next month sometime before we know if anyone had success.

  27. Laura says:

I also messaged the bank inquiring about the debit card part of the promotion but I received this back “…Thank you for choosing NYCB for all of your banking needs.
A point of sale transaction is any transaction that is made at a store. An online transaction is not considered a Point of Sale…”
I started typing out that I was gonna try this and then realized it’s too much work for too little reward for me. Good luck to anyone who runs with it but I’m gonna take my $100 and run here- well I’ll run after I can close the account fee free.

  28. Laura says:

PSA: you don’t have to wait for the pin number to arrive in order to activate the card. I waited a week for the pin number to come in after I’d received the debit card and went to activate it today and never had to enter the pin, just chose my own over the phone.

  29. anne says:

Initial funding was in the account in Jan. 4 but I have not got any documentation from them yet! I don’t even know my account #.

    • Dave says:

It took nearly a month to get this account going. Hang in there..

      • anne says:

I secure messaged them regarding the debit card and they replied telling me that I had to visit a branch to request a debit card sent to me. What????? I do not have a branch here. Not impressed with this bank. It can be even worse than Citi

        • Dave says:

That’s absurd. Try calling for a better/different answer.
My card & pin arrived today, so “five weeks” since the app.

        • Ferris says:

That’s weird. When I first signed in online after my account got approved it asked me if I wanted to order a debit card and checks. btw for the account number I sent them a secured message and they got back to me with it

          • Gadget says:

Apparently that is how it “should” work. When I called last night to check on the status of my debit card, the CSR said I “should” have got an e-mail or secure message asking me to reply if I wanted a debit card. He could not tell me a status, but requested that I send a secure message to Category “Debit/ATM inquiry”. Today I got the response: “A new card has been ordered and it should take 7-10 business days to arrive.” Not impressed with this bank, but not giving up yet.

  30. Dave says:

Your link is now showing “Page Not found”

Offer is still good when using this link tho:
    https://mybankingdirect.com/Products/Checking

  31. Dave says:

Two attempts made to run card as credit (at walmart & a supermarket),
    both were declined..

  32. James B. says:

DP: I applied back on Dec 19, 2016 and finally received my debit card and checks yesterday.

Lesson: Hang in there and expect to wait for the debit card.

  33. James B. says:

The 6 debit card trans, 3 online bill payments, and 1 DD must occur in two consecutive statement cycle months (not calendar months).

William, you might want to clarify this in the Offer details above.

    • Darv says:

I appreciate the homework and reporting back so this reply isn’t directed at you but rather the bank. The requirements do not need to be done in statement cycles. So if my statement or yours cut too soon before we could get DD set up or before the bill payments could be executed, that’s not on us. The terms say it must be done for two consecutive months within 90 days of setting up the account. That’s it. Nothing further specified. Also I’ve been told things about the debit card transactions that have been contradicted by others here. On top of that, my debit card can’t be use online at all, not for any reason–and that’s absurd. They offered a promotion and I am fulfilling the terms but I’m not taking flack from these people. I’m fed up with the misinformation/conflicting information.

I don’t understand why institutions put up offers and then make it this difficult. Isn’t the goal to acquire new customers? I mean if you want to stop people from collecting then you shouldn’t be offering the promo, or if you can’t afford it. Treat us right and we’ll decide whether to stick with you. It rarely happens with these offers for me personally, but in at least two occasions I have kept business as a result of “churning” community offers. Bottom line, it’s a contract and if you don’t hold up your end, I’ll file a complaint.

  34. James B. says:

Updated clarification on the bonus offer (I was provided incorrect info from the bank):

    1) The 6 debit card transactions must be physically swiped with debit transaction selected. Online debit card transactions do not qualify for the $50 bonus. The $1.50 is waived for My Direct Checking Account relationship. Must be completed with 90 days of account opening.

    2) The 3 online bill payments must be completed in two consecutive calendar months within 90 days of account opening.

    3) The DD must be completed in two consecutive calendar months within 90 days of account opening.

    • mpcee123 says:

I called the bank and was told the following with regard to the $50 debit card part of the bonus:

1.) Quaifying debit card transactions must be POS.
2.) Choosing credit (no PIN) or debit (PIN) for the transactions doesn’t matter. Simply using the card for POS transactions is what matters.
3.) If choosing debit, I would indeed incur $1.50 in fees per transaction, so therefore, choose credit.

      Lots of confusion around this…

      • James B. says:

Definitely a lot of conflicting information coming from the bank.

One thing is very clear: online debit card trans do not qualify for the bonus.

        • mpcee123 says:

I think a lot of the confusion is around the following semantic:

“Debit *card* transaction” vs. “Debit transaction”

The first is simply using the debit card. Running it through as “credit” or “debit” (with PIN) doesn’t matter.

The second is actually running the transaction as “debit” (with PIN).

My bet is selecting credit or debit doesn’t matter, so long as you are physically swiping the card and conducting an in-person POS transaction (of $10 or more, per the promo).

          My $0.02…

      • James B. says:

A bank rep told me that the $1.50 fee is waived if the client has a My Direct Checking Account.

I made 3 debit transactions at Walmart by inserting the debit card and typing in the PIN. No fees on my account.

    • Laura says:

I’d get that in writing! I have met the bill pays (end of Dec and beg of Jan) and the DD reqs (end of Dec, mid Jan), I’m past the business days when the bonuses should have posted. I’ve secure messaged the bank and they told me I had to complete 6 bill pays in 2 consecutive months and that my account was opened on 12/15 (?… even they’re secure messaging customer support seems confused). I have written back detailing my bill pay dates and adding my DD details. I’ll post an update when I hear back. I’m looking to see if they stick to “calendar month” or if they turn that into “statement cycle”. [rant time: After all the debit card confusion and this ridiculousness, the promo seems to be filled with intentional obfuscation so this bank is headed onto my sleazy/stay away from, bank list.]

      • James B. says:

        Hi Laura,

The first bank rep told me it is based on statement cycle months and the 2nd bank rep told me it is based on calendar months. The 2nd bank seemed to be more informed and the terms imply calendar months. What did the bank reps tell you?

Remember that this bank is not fast; it takes them about 1 month to send out debit cards after application approval. Everyone should expect to put on their patience smile for this promo.

        • Laura says:

Patience is indeed a virtue! What I know for sure is the bonus did not trigger automatically using calendar months & that’s all I know for sure right now. I’ve been secure messaging from my online account so I have everything in writing, they haven’t responded to my pointing out that I did complete the bonus reqs but I will update when they do.

          • James B. says:

Laura- Did the bank confirm if the two consective months is based on calendar months?

          • Laura says:

Hi James B (I couldn’t reply to your comment so I’ll post here),
Nope. Silence. They answered my first message within 24 hours and they never replied to my follow up questions that I asked on Jan 24 or the new message I sent on Jan 25. I am re-completing the bill pays and another DD from work so that I will complete everything according statement cycle months. Not happy about it but after all this nonsense I really want my 150 out of it. (I also did the debit card part after people reported back there were no fees.)

  35. Tianchen Zhang says:

    The page is down

  36. Adam D says:

All this hassle for $150 max, seems like the month to get the HSBC account open and still waiting on the $350 isnt so bad now…Any DP on what triggers a DD?

  37. Gadget says:

Got my checks within a week, but just got my debit card yesterday(just over a month). I recommend anyone signing up to contact them as soon as you get online access to request a debit card. Automated debit card activation phone number routed me to a real CSR. Found out they did not receive my signature card. I know I sent it in using the envelope they sent me with the “welcome packet”. So, they had a “online accounts” department rep e-mail me another, and asked that I e-mail or FAX it in. I did both, and received a e-mail response in about an hour stating my account was now fully active. I was then able to activate my debit card via the automated telephone system, and setup my PIN. Now it’s time to see if it really works.

    • Ferris says:

I just got my debit too yesterday and set up a PIN over the phone. Did they also make you input your whole social security number and DOB to activate the card? I thought that was so sketchy I had to make sure I dialed the right number

      • Laura says:

Sketchy is when you have to call them in person! I had to give my full SSN, DOB, and answers to all my security questions to a random CSR.

  38. James B. says:

Have other people confirmed that the two consecutive months are based on calendar months?

  39. rajv says:

The link is no longer available. I believe the offer is over DoC?

  40. Tomtoo says:

Applied for account on 12/30/16. Printed and signed the signature card and mailed it the next day. I got a total of four letters in the mail over the next 18 days containing a signature card and paid mailing envelope and instructing me to send it in, the fourth dated 01/18/17. I did sign and send the first one back, just to make sure. One day after the fourth letter was SENT (not received), 01/19/17, they transferred my initial deposit into my account. Still no account number. Received debit card on 01/25/17. Did NOT receive pin# in mail the “next business day” as the letter stated I would. Gave it one more day, still no pin#, so called in and was able to establish the pin# over the phone, and then had to call a different department for instructions on how to get my account number.

Where I got tripped up after trying to follow their instructions is, to establish online access, you must do it at mynycb.com NOT mybankingdirect.com, even though you will use the latter address always thereafter for your online banking [confused gaze]. Once finally getting that set up, I had to send a SM requesting my account number. Someone along the line claimed I was issued the number when I applied, but I made copies of everything when I applied and I see it nowhere, only an Account Application ID#. Besides, why would they state in the application that they would send notification to me of the “status of [my] application” within the next 10 days if I already had an account?

Oh well, I now have an account and have already gotten a statement dated “From 01/19/17 (day of initial deposit) thru 01/23/17”, a whole 5 days.. Does this mean everybody’s statement period will end on the 23rd of the month? Who knows! On to fulfilling the bonus requirements and, after reading above and on their website, wondering just how they are actually going to apply those “two consecutive months”.

  41. Dave says:

    Tomtoo –

The cycle date is also the 23rd for me.
I am doing the required transactions between the 1st and 23rd,
making sure they clear before the 23rd.
This way it is covered weather it is calendar month or cycle dates.

By the way – I still use mynycb.com for online banking.

  42. Tomtoo says:

That’s good to know, Dave [still a confused daze]. For further amusement, today I just received my 5th signature card to return.

  43. Laura says:

All three of my bonuses posted today! I completed my last debit card transaction on 1/26 (6 $10 gift card purchases at Target done 3 on one day, 3 the next- tip: guest services can combine all those cards onto one immediately after purchase!) I re-completed my bill pays and direct deposit for the 2nd statement cycle (vs 2nd calendar month) on 1/31. They never responded to my SM so I still don’t know if it was calendar month or stmt cycle but they did fulfill on the $150 bonus they promised.

  44. James B. says:

I received the debit card POS $50 bonus.

It still is not clear if the two consecutive months are based on statement cycle or calendar months.

Have other people confirmed that the two consecutive months are based on calendar months?

    • Darv says:

James, did you select debit and enter PIN or did you select credit?

      • JAMES B. says:

I inserted the debit card and it only asked for the PIN which I entered. No debit or credit option displayed at my local Walmart. No fees were charged by the bank for the debit card trans.

I also used it at a 7-Eleven gas station and no PIN request was displayed. No debit or credit option displayed at my local 7-Eleven.

  45. Laura says:

I finally heard back on my 2 SMs from a week and half ago letting me know my bonus has already posted. lol.

  46. john mccann says:

Once all requirements are met THEN you receive the bonuses. That’s how I read it. So,a direct deposit IS required. I’ll call to be sure, though.

  47. Gmoney says:

Good news for those of us that struggled to get the debit card working: I just made 3x payments to Comcast and 3x Amazon Gift cards all over the $10 requirement. Prior to today I had given up on the debit card portion of this since the card was getting declined at Comcast and Amazon. They must have updated it! The transactions are pending but say “point of sale”. I’ll update if anything changes or when I get my bonus.

    • Gmoney says:

DP for bonus for online POS transactions: Did 3 for Comcast and 3 for Amazon reloads all for $10.01 to $10.06 all on 2/7. Debit card bonus posted today 2/14!

Still waiting on my Bill Pay bonus since I’ve completed it on 2/8. I’ve paid over 3 bill pays each month, but this month was for 3 different cards but only 2 different card companies (Chase and Citi). I’ll wait a bit and maybe send a bill pay to another card just to be sure. Regardless, the terms state that I’m eligible for the bonus.

  48. James B. says:

I never had any issues using the debit card at Walmart and 7-Eleven. You might want to verify through a secure message that online purchases and payments qualify for the bonus. I was told by a bank rep that the debit purchases must be done in a physical POS.

    • Gmoney says:

The online transactions say they are Point of Sale (POS) in the description, so I’m not worried.

      • Diomaiuti says:

I did all 6 card transactions as actual, in-person, non-PIN swipes. They all show online as “DBT Purchase store name…, etc.” not as “POS.” I guess I will also try 6 more using the PIN to cover bases and then just cross my fingers. Good thing I have some time still to conduct this experiment,

  49. Gadget says:

DP: ACH from Cap One 360 and/or my local credit union DID trigger DD bonus. I went “ballistic” sending funds so I can say for certain which did it. DD & Bill Pay bonus posted 2/7/17.

  50. milesjjcc says:

I did 3 bill pay for 3 CCs & another 3 bill pays for another 3 different CC. Statement cycle & month-both were different still bonus not posted. Not sure whats the logic

  51. Curmudgeon says:

    1/11/17: Account opened
1/18/17: First set of bill pays sent
1/26/17: Second set of bills pays sent
2/06/17: Third set of bills pays sent (just to make sure)

    2/07/17: $50 bonus received

Second DD should show up in about a week. Can’t do debits yet since I’m still waiting on debit card 🙁 I had to call a week or so ago to see why I didn’t get one and they said it was never sent to begin with, so they ordered one but I’m still waiting.

So far, 1/3 of the way there. So, 1/3 Thanks, Doc!

    • Curmudgeon says:

Update: Debit card finally showed up. Did six $10 Amazon gift card reloads, over about five minutes on 2/10. $50 bonus posted on 2/14.

      So 2/3 Thanks Doc!

    • Curmudgeon says:

      Final update:

2/27: ACH from CapOne 360 treated as direct deposit
2/28: “New Acct Cash Bonus: Direct Dep” $50 posted

All 3 bonuses posted, 1 data point for DD added. Yet another bonus checked off the list.

      Thanks DoC!

  52. Gadget says:

Did 6 debit card transactions on 2/8, & $50 bonus appeared today, 2/14.

Details: one Wal-Mart register, where you get prompted for PIN instantly, and five gas station pumps of $10+ on the same street, where you get asked if it is a debit card, hit yes, PIN entered. You might be able to hit NO and run as credit, I didn’t try. As expected, no fees on statement for debit.

I read somewhere in a blog a debit card or CC will get blocked if you try more than two transactions at the same gas station, so I drove to a different station twice. I wasn’t going to test the myth and ruin my day by dealing with a CSR.

    • Gmoney says:

Same for me (see above for more details):

DP for bonus for online POS transactions: Did 3 for Comcast and 3 for Amazon reloads all for $10.01 to $10.06 all on 2/7.

    • James B. says:

I have only had issues with consecututive transactions being blocked when they are the same amount. For example: $1.50, $1.50, $1.50

To avoid this happening, I vary the amount of each transaction.

  53. Ferris says:

anyone else get a direct deposit bonus early? I got it only after one direct deposit. should I still do the 2nd?

    • Curmudgeon says:

I haven’t. My 2nd direct deposit will show up in a couple of days so I hope it posts soon after.

I would do the second DD since that’s required under the bonus terms, and you might have the bonus taken back if someone looks at your account and determines you didn’t actually meet the requirements.

    • Gmoney says:

Ferris, did you do a legit direct deposit? Curious if your one was legit or you deposited over $500 from an external account and they counted it as DD.

  54. lingua says:

So bonus received for DD(Cap One 360) and Debit card spend, though not for bill pay despite having completed the bill pay requirements…perhaps it didn’t trigger because they all posted the same as Chase Cards Serv… though they are for 3 different Chase cards.

My ? is should I contact CSR to inquire about this or may it draw unwanted attention to my successful DD workaround.

  55. James B. says:

The DD and Bill Pay bonuses finally posted.

DP: Schwab brockerage works as DD.

Lesson: Hang in there and wait it out for this bank.

  56. Jake says:

This one is A LOT of work. Something to think about if you’re working on more than one bonus.

  57. eclipsor says:

got my other bonuses but it’s been 3 weeks exactly since my last bill pay went out and I didn’t get the bonus for that yet. The bill pays were all more than $10 and in 2 consecutive months as well as statement cycles. did it take this long for anyone else?

  58. James B. says:

The bill pays bonus took longer than I expected at about 4 weeks after completion of the bill pay requirements. I did the bill pays for 3 consecutive billing cycles, although only 2 consecutive billing cycles are required.

I decided to wait it out rather than calling in or sending secure messages.

  59. Joshua H says:

Hey Doc, looks like they also have a fourth $50 bonus for opening a Money Market account, depositing $25k, and using their Mobile app within 7 days of account opening. Quite a high amount for such a low bonus, but no minimum hold time mentioned in the fine print. Expires April 15th and needs to be opened at the same time as the checking. https://mybankingdirect.com/Products/MoneyMarket

  60. eclipsor says:

been over 5 weeks now and still no BP bonus 🙁 definitely did 3 bill pays more than $10 in two consecutive months/cycles

    • eclipsor says:

I messaged them about it and got this

“Thank you for your message. For the $50.00 bonus for bill pay, you need to have 3 bill payments over $10.00 for two months in a row. Currently I only see you did only 3 bill payments in all.”

      uh exactly? lol

      • James B. says:

This bank definitely requires extra patience.

Sometimes a phone call is necessary.

        LOL

        • Grant says:

I know what you mean. I am still waiting for all 3 bonuses to post, even though I met all requirements.

One rep said I only did 2 $500 DDs, but when I checked my statements, I clearly see 3 $500 DDs. Counting is not this bank’s strong suit 🙂

          • Grant says:

I logged into my account this morning and saw the 3 $50 bonuses posted.

I received a response to my direct message and the closing sentence was “We appreciate your business and hope you enjoy the ease and convenience of banking online.”

  61. Blake says:

Just to have another DP, Capital One 360 worked for DD.

  62. NN says:

another DP for Cap One 360 as DD
finished 2nd DD last week, bonus posted yesterday 4/10

  63. There’s no minimum that needs to be kept in this account, right? In other words, I could just open the account with the 1500, pull it back out. DD $500. Pull it back out. DD $500 again the next month. Pull it back out. Wait for my bonus. Right?

  64. TanT says:

I can confirm that loading Amazon gift card works. I did it a bit more than $10 6 times. The 6th one was posted on 4/17 and the $50 bonus posted on 4/18.

  65. NoonRadar says:

For those of you who have gotten the bonus, can you please confirm the requirements:

    – DD: One $500+ per statement cycle, must repeat in next cycle.
    – Billpay: Three $10+ per statement cycle, must repeat in next cycle, or 3 altogether but must spread in two cycles?

Do you know if their statement cycle starts when you open the account or goes by a different date?

    Thanks.

    • eclipsor says:

the bill pay is 3 every cycle. I did 3 total and missed out on the bonus

    • NN says:

For me, it’s really not statement cycle but more than calender month. I sighed up around mid March and finish the first round of DD and bill pay at the end of March and then repeat another round at the beginning of April. Bonus post within a few days.
Also, the fine print I got said calendar month.

  66. Michael says:

Questioning the DD data pts. for Cap1. I have had account opened and made 2 $500 transactions initiated from Cap1 in two separate billing cycles, but CSR stated I did not meet DD requirement. Has anyone gotten similar description as below for there’s that bonus posted?

CAPITAL ONE N.A. CAPITALONE Uncategorized ACH Deposit $500.00

  67. seespotjump says:

Regarding expiration date, “Offer available 4/1/2017 – 5/31/2017” from the offer link.

  68. LagerBack says:

DP – Venmo satisfied debit card requirement: completed 6th debit card transaction (venom) on 5/5 and bonus posted on 5/9.

    • Lc says:

Any idea of the bank card adds to the total card limit allowed or is this separate since debit vs credit card?

      • LagerBack says:

I only have just this card added to my Venmo, so I’m not sure what is the limit.

        • Did you basically just Venmo to a family member in 6 separate $10 transactions? I think I’d prefer doing this method rather than buying amazon gift cards.

          • LagerBack says:

Yes, I basically did that. Although, after having read DoC’s separate post about Venmo suspending accounts for unusual usage, to make it look more “real” I sent different amounts instead of exactly $10 each transaction. To further make it look like real Venmo payments, I added emoji’s and a small description of the payment (ie lunch). I don’t know if this really makes any difference of preventing account suspension, but I don’t think it can hurt.

  69. Eileen says:

Two readers have posted this question previously but I haven’t seen a reply from other successful readers yet – initial deposit of $1500 can be pulled back out immediately given there are no monthly maintenance fees? Thanks.

    • NN says:

Can’t remember exactly how long the bank hold initial deposit but I believe you can withdraw right away after it’s clear.
FWIW, I withdrew mine in about 2 weeks after initial deposit. Only kept enough to finish other requirements.
      Hope that helps

  70. Ferris says:

Does anyone know if the Household Limit of 1 is enforced?

  71. QT says:

Can I bill pay the same payee or does it have to be 3 different payee?

  72. Superchurn says:

So, reading though these comments, i should use CapOne for DD, amazon reloads for the debits, and pay some CC’s for the bill pays..then wait. Seems straightforward, here’s hoping!

    • Superchurn says:

Wow, that was the most amateur, unprofessional-looking, weird feeling bank account application I’ve ever done.

      Anyone else feel that way?

    • Jonathan says:

Thanks for breaking this down for the newbies! Amazon reloads worked great. Waiting for the other two to run through the second cycle.

  73. James says:

Where does it say anything about those states being restricted? I don’t see anything on the offer page

    • Superchurn says:

u could always try it and see what happens…some banks don’t enforce their stated restrictions for states

  74. CharlieK says:

As James, asked, I’m wondering where the restricted states are listed? As this seems to be owned by NYCB, which is located in New York, I find it odd that they would exclude the state. I didn’t see anywhere on te site where it excluded states. Normally if you’re in a restricted area, it won’t allow you to open at all so I’m curious where the states are listed?

  75. LagerBack says:

DP – Cap1 360 Money Market Savings satisfied dd requirement.

I just opened the money market account for the $200 bonus and its already being put to use..! Thanks DoC you are seriously OP.

  76. eclipsor says:

anyone else having issues logging in?

everytime I put in my username and password and log in it takes me to a logout page

    “Logged Out From Online Banking

We’re sorry an error has occurred. Please click here for Customer Service if you need further assistance.
Thank you for banking online with New York Community ”

    tried on different browsers

  77. LF says:

I submitted an application today and it says “Your account application has been submitted and is in process.

As a reminder, you will receive a welcome package by mail within 10 days. Please look for this package and return any required documents in the enclosed self-addressed, postage-paid envelope.”

Is my application still within May 31st deadline, or does it depend on the approval?

  78. eclipsor says:

DP and follow up as to why I kept getting an error everytime I tried to log in saying that “I’ve been logged out”

Apparently My Banking Direct closed out my account on their own since it’s been at a 0 balance for the past 3 months. They didn’t seem to charge me anything though.

Whatever, they did the work for me, I already got the bonus!

  79. LC says:

Anyone else get a letter from them asking for the following before opening account?
    1) Signature card

  82. Prometheus says:

Lake Michigan Credit Union ( LMCU ) shows up on their bill pay and you can basically fund that account through bill pay. I did not personally do this, and I think it would be wise to put a normal bill or two paid anyway.

  83. Marc Guttentag says:

For the Bill Pay, does it have to be two consecutive months or can it just be 3 set up in a two month period? How would you spread it out? Does anyone know if setting up a person to person bill pay triggers? I’ve had this work before. Lastly, if anyone has Capitol one 360 has anyone gotten the DD bonus by setting up an ACH under the same guidelines. Need tips.

  84. Luke says:

Late data point, I unknowingly signed up for the bonus on 6/5/17 and completed all my transactions necessary for the bonus. To my surprise the bonus was credited to my account couple days ago.

  85. Steve F says:

The household limit was enforced for my wife and I. I got the bonuses, she was refused the bonuses and CS stated she was not eligible due to one per household limit.
