Bank of America $100 Checking Bonus – Public & Nationwide

There is a targeted $300 offer, please check to see if you’re targeted for that before thinking about this one!

Offer at a glance

The Offer

Direct link to offer

  • Bank of America is offering a $100 bonus when you open a new eligible checking account and complete the following requirements:
    • Receive two qualifying direct deposits of at least $250 each within 90 days

The Fine Print

  • This offer is intended for new checking customers only; you are not eligible for this offer if you were a signer on or owner of a Bank of America personal checking account within the last six (6) months. Offer expires on December 31, 2017; however, Bank of America may change or discontinue this offer at any time before this date without notice.
  • A “Qualifying Direct Deposit” is a recurring direct deposit of a paycheck, pension, Social Security or other eligible regular monthly income, electronically deposited by an employer or an outside agency into your new checking account. A transfer done via ATM, online, or teller, or a transfer from a bank or brokerage account, Merrill Edge® or Merrill Lynch® account is not a Qualifying Direct Deposit
  • If you meet all of the requirements, we will attempt to deposit the earned bonus directly into your new personal checking account within sixty (60) days; if unable to do so, a check will be issued. The new personal checking account must be open up to and including the date any earned bonus is paid in order to receive the bonus.
  • Your account does not qualify for the bonus until you provide all of the information we require in connection with opening the account by the promotion end date. This includes information we require to identify each account owner and to report the bonus to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), including a validly completed IRS Form W-9 or Form W-8 (as applicable).
  • The value of this bonus may constitute taxable income to you. Bank of America may issue an IRS Form 1099 (or other appropriate form) to you that reflects the value of such bonus. To the extent required by law, Bank of America may withhold tax or other amounts from the payment. Please consult your tax advisor, as neither Bank of America, its affiliates, nor their employees provide tax advice.

  • “Combined balances” include:
    • Average daily balances for the statement cycle in eligible linked checking, savings and money market savings accounts, AND

    • The current balance, as of two business days before the end of the Interest Checking statement cycle, in your eligible linked Merrill Edge and Merrill Lynch investment accounts.

Our Verdict

As mentioned before there is a targeted $300 checking bonus from Bank of America, they both have the same expiry date of December 31st, 2017. If I wasn’t targeted for that deal I’d do this one as it looks pretty easy to meet the requirements and it’s nationwide (you can also repeat it if you haven’t had an account within the last 6 months). Because of that I will be adding this to our best checking sign up promotion page. There is also a $200 business checking bonus or $300 + $200 in branch business checking bonus.

Big thanks to reader, Curmudgeon who let us know. Learn how to find bonuses and contribute to the site here.

  1. Brian says:

I know it says it in the fine print but anyone have luck on triggering a DD without actually doing one for BOA?

  2. joE says:

When is the last time they had a public offer greater than $100, if ever?

  3. Andrew says:

Is there any way to see if you are targetted if you have never done anything with BoA or do you absolutely need an account already?

  4. Josh m says:

DP: I signed up for this bonus back in December or January, ACH from Discover worked to avoid the account maintenance fee but my bonus never posted.

  5. TG says:

I really want a checking account for Preferred Rewards but there seems to be mixed DPs about whether or not they actually pull Chex. I’m sure they’ll deny me if they pulled it with how many inquiries I have recently

  6. Bob Newbie says:

Not sure if I want to bother trying with so little ACH transfers triggering the bonus.
Not worth annoying my HR people again to change my direct deposit.

Sign-up, transfer money from 10 different bank accounts, hope for the best? lol.

  7. Max says:

If I close an account on 6/30 and open one on 12/31 am I eligible?

  8. DD says:

Not very tempting. Plus, I’m still in recovery from the otherwordliness of Wells Fargo and HSBC. Ugh!

  9. James says:

I think BOA might be sensitive to having a lot of open accounts. I tried to do the business checking bonus two months ago and had my account closed two days later after opening due to information from “early warning systems”.

    • Matt says:

I had a similar experience applying for this one. I have added 3 new accounts over the last month, applied for this one, got the debit card and account number, nothing worked, phone reps didn’t have any info to verify me. Went into the branch today and they told me risk management pre-emptively closed the account. Need to go pull my ChexSystems report, but I shouldn’t have any negatives.

  10. Sal says:

Made 2 $250 ACH from HSBC didn’t trigger the bonus

  11. Sam says:

    Does 360 transfer count?

  12. Dan says:

Been getting $150 targeted mailers, one expires soon. Recently got the Merrill+. Any reason to think the $150 mailers will turn into $300 if I wait; or that the Merrill+ will kill chances of future targeted offers?

  13. Madison says:

Is it best to open online opposed to opening in branch? When you state can be funded with a debit card do you do that at the same time when you open the account?

  14. Saf says:

Applied and got rejected. Looks like I’m still banned from BoA..meanwhile Chase and Citi keep calling/emailing me to move my funds back to them for Gold/CPC service.

Still good DP for me. Won’t bother applying for Merrill+ card since that would probably be denied as well…

  15. johnston says:

Opened checking account, linked two other bank accounts to push, pushed one $250 from Schwab Brokerage, account closed by corporate. Waiting on the letter.

Really wanted to establish a relationship here too for CC’s.

    • johnston says:

Also, I have 20ish checking accounts opened in the past 2.5 months. I see reports they pull Chex and EWS. Not sure if that did me in.

  16. Shivansh Chandnani says:

When I try to open the account, it says the offer code is invalid or expired. Weird considering that BoA itself puts in the promcode.

  17. Lisa says:

Is the $100 bonus offer targeted? do I need a code? I called BofA and they say if this offer does not show up on the BofA webpage, they cannot gurantee this is a real offer. Anyone tried and worked?

  18. Josh says:

Got the $150 targeted offer. Will BoA match to the $300 if I call and ask?

    • Doubtful, but always worth a try I guess.

      • Josh says:

3 HUCAs—both the second and third CSRs were willing to help and I thought the third one was going to be my lucky charm, but it didn’t pan out. Given the timeframe to DD, it doesn’t seem feasible via my employer anyway, so not going to take up the offer.

For reference, the link I received in the mail was, and I entered to find the comparable mail offer (contrary to what the main $300 offer thread indicates; it seems like there may be two).

  19. Pizza says:

I’m not seeing anything in the fine print about this, after the bonus posts is it ok to close the account?

Trying a lot of ACHs and nothing worked so far.

The ones I’ve tried so far and are not working to trigger the bonus are:
    Schwab Brokerage

  27. Troy says:

I did a push from Etrade and it codes as follows:

Still waiting to see if this will trigger the DD requirement. Will check back to say if it works or not.

    • Rick H says:

Did E*Trade Bank trigger the DD requirement for you? It’s unclear if you need to transfer from E*Trade Bank or E*Trade Financial (brokerage account) to trigger the DD requirement.

  28. Justintime says:

How long does it take for the bonus to post here? GS bank is a confirmed no.

  29. NinjaZ says:

got my $100 quite fast. If I were to close the acct, there is no penalty, right.?(like clawing back bonus)

  30. Justintime says:

Fidelity doesn’t seem to work either. Trying my local CU and going from there… pretty hard to trigger this one. Going to try bluebird but there are mixed datapoints here.

  31. ABA says:

I used payroll direct deposit so can’t comment on alternatives, but in terms of timeline, I was targeted for the $300 bonus (had 2 open credit cards w/ BoA), made my DD’s on 7/21, 8/4, and 8/18, and received the bonus 8/29.

  32. Pizza says:

Account opened 7/15, then two $250 pushes from Serve on 8/16 and 8/18, $100 bonus posted on 8/29.

  33. SC says:

  34. Troy says:

I did two pushes from E Trade on 8/11 and 8/15 and there is still no bonus posted (on 9/8), so I’m assuming ETrade isn’t working…

  35. Angji says:

    Looks like Coinbase works.

Deposited from Coinbase on 8/8 and 8/11
    $100 bonus posted on 8/29

  36. ENRICO says:

Requirement I received was higher. Maybe because had one time a BoA checking.
I need to do a total $4000 direct deposit in 90 days.

  38. Craig says:

Today I no longer see the targeted offer for me on my BOA login portal. I thought the targeted offer was till 12-31-17.

Is it just me who is no longer having the offer?

  39. Kevin says:

Not sure if this was answered, but if we did the BOA Business Checking bonus earlier this year, are we still eligible to get this bonus? Seems easy enough to snag.

  40. Hodor says:

After the first page of the application, I got this strange message:

“To open your account, please bring two forms of identification with you, such as:

Government-issued photo ID (examples: drivers license, passport)
    Social Security card
Utility bill (must contain name and current address)
    Major retail store credit card

We’re sorry, but we are unable to continue with your online application.

We’ll email you the details on your application status shortly.”

Did this happen to anyone else?

    • Patti says:

It’s sounds like they’re not denying you but want you to apply in branch. PNC keeps doing this to me too. Not sure why that happens. 🙁

  41. Ron says:

how does one know if one is a targeted customer? I have a BofA credit card and see this offer under special deals section upon login – does that mean I am targeted? or do I need to have a mail with a code or something?

  42. Sam says:

Well, here is my experience. I opened an account the first of this month on the phone. I was assured by the phone repr. that I was targeted (I have one of their credit cards) and he told me that if I kept $1,500 in the account that I wouldn’t need to do any direct deposits to receive my bonus. Got a strange BofA letter in the mail after a few days stating that all or a portion of my deposit was not available for a period of 12 days. I have done business with many banks over the years and that was a new one. Recently, I tried to open an online bank account and kept on getting a strange error and to call their number, so had to get on the phone with a phone repr. who spent an hour with me until I was finally able to log in. I inquired with her about my bonus and she was like what bonus? She looked into it and there was no bonus identified for my account. So at this point I decided to close my account and went to the local branch. After waiting for 30 minutes, I was able to talk to a repr and filled her in and told her that I had never been treated this way by any bank. I noticed as I was leaving that the person waiting behind me in line also was closing their account.

  43. Ronnie says:

Pushed $250 from Capital One 360 Checking A/C on 10/9 and 10/12,and still no bonus.
